LOL!!! Yeah! I was hoping we might get a few people together and have night at a restaurant night like the Dr.K ladies do at Red Robin.

That's a good idea! I subscribed to this thread a long time ago, but then it kind of went dormant.

I'd love to join you for dinner sometime but live in Midway and don't get to the valley very often. But let me know if you find a time and I'll do my best to be there--sounds fun! Karen

Hello Everyone!

I'd love to join you for dinner, evenings work best for me. I went to a nice support group but everyone had gastric bypass and it wasn't really helpful for me. I was banded last March so I'm coming up on my year mark and my last fill finally hit the 'sweet spot' Thank goodness! I went through Rocky Mountain and he does flouroscopy when needed.

It looks like I'll be out of town beginning the 19th of February until March 12 so will miss getting together. Let me know if you want to get together again after I get back--I'd love to meet you all!

I was laid off January 9, which is the bad news, but now I get to go visit my grandkids in San Francisco, New York City, and Connecticut since I don't have a job--which is definitely the GOOD news!

Hope everyone is doing well. Karen

Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum but was glad to find a thread for people in Utah. I was just banded on January 12, 2009 by Dr. Hansen at South Valley Surgical. I have my first visit to see if I need a fill on Friday, February 13th. I would like to meet some new friends who will support me through this. I haven't told only a couple of my other friends because in the past my friends have only sabatoged my efforts. Sometimes I wonder if they are truly friends. So if you don't mind...I may want to crash the party.

Welcome. I hope you can crash the party!! Congratz on getting your band! Fills are great! I am scheduled for one next Thursday. I haven't told many friends either. I have only told my closest friends and they are the ones that would support me. So where do you live? I am in Sugarhouse.

I haven't told anyone but my husband, sister, and children. I've lost very slowly so no one really questions my weight loss but if they comment I tell them that it's been a lot of work and it's MOSTLY diet and exercise (which I believe is true) and a few other factors. With losing as slowly as I have, I'm really glad that I didn't tell people--their expectations would be over the top, I believe. Anyway, that's my perspective.

I live in Midway but would be glad to come to the valley. Thanks for choosing March--I'll be back in town on the 12th and will look forward to getting together.

Anywhere is fine--just let me know. I'm trying to think of suggestions--not too familiar with SLC restaurants. We lived in Provo before and I would have some suggestions if there are a majority of people from Utah county. One place in SLC that might be a possibility is Cowboy Grub on Foothill Boulevard. They have a nice salad bar as well as Soup and a full menu. It's hard to stay away from their daily pie special, though ($1 for a piece of the pie of the day). So I'm open for anything!

Welcome to the newbies! Karen

I'm in West Jordan so I can pretty much go anywhere and not have it be to far for me.

Hey Everyone! I'm in Midvale Utah. I was Banded March 9th exactly two weeks ago today. The support group that my Dr's office has actually turned out to be a pissing match between the patients who used to be nurses and the nurses who are still working. It's ubsurd and not supportive at all.

Welcome, Jenny, and congrats on your surgery. This is a pretty quiet thread but I think we are hoping to get together somewhere soon. Sorry your dr's office didn't provide the support you need. Hopefully you can find support here on this site. Hope you are feeling well by now. Are you still on liquids? Who did your surgery? It's tough at first with the liquids then mushies then solids with no restriction but you'll be ready for a fill in no time. Good luck to you! Karen

I know no one has posted here in a while, idk if I ever have, but I thought it might be nice to talk to other Utah bandsters. I live in Sugarhouse and work in Murray. Anyone out there?

Just reading through posts and saw yours...I live in The Avenues -- moved back to SLC from L.A. in June. My husband and I are TV/film writers/novelists. I haven't been banded yet and in fact am just starting my research so I'd appreciate wisdom from someone who has already walked the walk. How did you start your journey? I don't have a general practitioner doc here yet -- is that where I need to begin? I do have an excellent rheumatologist --I have R.A. -- at University of Utah. But enough about me. How's your journey going? Thanks for listening. Cherie:redface:

My journey was pretty quick actually. I had done quite a bit of research about the band, and finally had the opportunity to get it done. I was self pay, and was looking for a good surgeon for a good price in the U.S. I was worried about having trouble/extra expense getting aftercare here. I found Dr. Kirshenbaum in Colorado by doing some research on surgeons on the internet, and found him to be in my price range, and an excellent surgeon. It only took me about 6 weeks from the time that I called his office to start the process until I was banded. pm me for more details if you want them!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
