Sooo Sick Of Protein Shakes!

Recommended Posts

I had 2 weeks pre op of liquid Protein, broth, and popsicles... I am now one week post op and STILL on only Protein, Jello, broth, and popsicles... I was told I can start egg drop Soup on Monday, but NO other foods until 11/12... I am so sick of the taste of the Protein shakes that I am starting to gag... Any suggestions? Sign me,

So my plan says I can try soft foods this week, week 2 post op. Both times I have tried have not been good. food feels like it gets stuck and its really painful. I just feel like I am starving to death but back to liquids and pudding I go. Egg drop Soup actually sounds good so I will have to try that. This stage is harder than I thought but I am ready for some results.

I mixed my shakes with extracts to change the flavor. I would also add a dab of PB2 to say banana flavored Protein and it was awesome! Changes it a ton.

I think we have all been there. At least I have and have heard others say the same thing. You are almost there, not much longer, just know you are not alone. There is not much more you can do to make the shakes taste better. I have tried a lot of Protein Shakes and to me none of them are tasty. Eggface does have some recipes for icecream made with them that is pretty good for a change. You might look there for other recipe. Good luck.

I also think the Protein is making my breath stink! I brush my teeth and tongue after each shake, but maybe its the protein in an otherwise empty stomach!

Any one else having this problem?

May time to try some new protein like Chike, Syntax nectar, Cytomax Sport. I have read in other post that the stink breath has to do with your body being in Ketosis.

OMG, THANK YOU... I had never heard that before... Look what a little research turned up for those of us who are having this problem:

Low-Carb Diets Can Cause Bad Breath

Low-carb lifestyle junkies are more likely to suffer from a seldom discussed side effect of such diets -- halitosis, aka bad breath. And since more than 25 million people say they have tried the Atkins diet (not to mention other low-carb eating plans), according to the National Marketing Institute, bad breath may be an epidemic!

Bad breath in the low/no-carb sect is often caused by certain chemicals that are released in the breath as the body burns fat. They are called ketones, and entering into a fat-burning state of ketosis is the hallmark of the Atkins diet. So the good news is that if your breath stinks, you're probably doing a good job of sticking to that low-carb diet.

"Carbohydrates aren't readily available, so you start to use other fats and Proteins as your source of energy, and as a result you are going to get a breath problem," explains Kenneth Burrell, DDS, the senior director of the council on scientific affairs of the American Dental Association.

Pass the bread?

This is not an oral hygiene problem, Burrell says, so "all the brushing, flossing, and scraping of the tongue that you can do is not possibly enough to overcome this."

The bottom line is that you must "reconsider the diet and modify it so this doesn't happen," he says. Sure, "there may be some ways to mask it by using mouthwashes, but you can't overcome the fundamental problem other than by changing the diet -- or at least introducing some carbohydrates."

"It's a difficult problem to solve because if one uses any sucking candy or lozenge, one has to be careful that it has no sugar in it" as sugar is a big no-no on many low-carb eating plans, says S. Lawrence Simon, DDS, a New York City periodontist. Even so-called "sugar-free" products are often loaded with carbs.

"If you have a metabolic cause of bad breath, there is very little the dentist can do; you have to change your diet," he says.

In fact, "the South Beach diet permits more carbs than the traditional Atkins diet, so there is bound to be less bad breath on South Beach because you are not going into a state of ketosis," he says.

Masking the Problem While Dropping the Pounds

"If I was dropping weight, I would buy more sugarless mints, not quit the diet," says Charles H. Perle, DMD, a general dentist in Jersey City, N.J., and a spokesman for the Academy of General Dentistry.

Perle says that even though this is not an oral hygiene problem, certain things can help banish the bad breath or at least mask the odor.

  • Drink more Water.
  • Chew sugarless gum.
  • Suck on sugarless mints. In particular, those that contain Xylitol also kill bacteria and can prevent cavities.

Or, he says, "drink Water and swish it around in your mouth after you eat. It moistens the mouth and gets the food particles that may contribute to odor out.

"Basically when you are on a low-carbohydrate diet, the key to success is breaking fat into ketones to create ketosis, and as ketones get into urine and saliva, it can cause horrible breath," Perle tells WebMD.

Drinking plenty of water helps dilute the concentration of ketones. In addition, chewing fresh parsley can help.

If your bad breath persists, see your doctor, as it can be a sign of a serious medical condition, such as diabetes.

I love the Bariatric Advantage iced latte. But I am sure I am going to be sick of it before long. I have read people using unflavored Protein. Just wondering where I can get that.

Ok...so keeping my daily weight updated on here is getting tedious due to the the daily 0-3 lbs fluctuations.  Soooo...I figure I'm just going to update every 1-2 weeks moving forward.

Yeah, I kinda do it when I see a new low. Then it fluctuates up and down up and down until I finally see a new low. Mine went down to 131 on Saturday but is now back to 133, lol. So I won't log it till I see 131 for a second time.

I do my daily weight graph in My Fitness Pal. Much easier and it keeps a cool graph!!

Me too (sort of). I gifted myself a fancy-shmancy smart scale back in January and it wirelessly updates the data to Apple Health in my phone, which in turn automatically updates MFP (among other apps I have). Very hands off on my part. Updating BP was the only manual weight updating I was doing, which has stopped being fun and instead become a job, now that the weight goes up and down so much.

      3. FluffyChix

LOL the joys of maintenance! ;) NOT!

      4. sillykitty

Like @FluffyChix I updated at every new low, consequently I'm now listed as my lowest weight. I should probably update it to where I've been maintaining, which is +3 lbs or so from that weight.

      5. FluffyChix

Nah, keep your low and stay aware of your upper threshold so you don't hit it. :D ;)

      OMG! I dreamt of cake!!
As of late, my dreams have been food obsessed. Last night I dreamed of gorging on good old American sheet cake with chocolate frosting. There was white frosting as well. Good thing we can't get that in Sweden! I just hope that I haven't become too engrossed in food. BUT they are only dreams after all.
