Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

6 days post-op and all is going well. Feeling good and coping with liquids well! But I have a couple of questions:

1) my tongue is really furry-you know coated with white fur! Any ideas on this? (thinking just result of all the meds in the last week???)

2) what happens to all the staples? Will the row of metal staples be there forever? My surgeon gave me a DVD of my op and so I saw exactly what it all looked like in there and my brother watched it too-and he asked me if the staples stay or disintegrate and I have no idea?

Thanks all

Xxx

The staples are titanium and you will have those for life. That is neat you actually received a DVD of the surgery.

Is your tongue and throat actually white? If they are you could have thrush from the antibiotics and surgery. I would check with your dr office.

Glad your feeling well otherwise!

Yep the staples are forever, the body will encase them in a bunch of scar tissue and they would be covered up but they will always be visible on an x-ray other other imaging system, And there is not issue with MRI's or anything like that, they are non ferrous, that is not effected by magnets.

The tongue coating more than likely it's the result of your body entering ketosis. When you start to burn fat it changes your blood chemistry and causes bad breath, nasty taste and this tongue coating. Think of it like a car burning oil and blowing smoke, it's the "smoke" that's coating your tongue. It's harmless but nasty. get a tongue scraper at the store and use a good mouthwash. It'll pass - but may take a few months or more.

Holy crap, I never even thought about the staples! Will they set the alarm off going through security at the airport?

No, my doc told me the staples should be invisible to the metal detectors. It would be interesting to see in a TSA screen though.

No, titanium shouldn't go off at the airport. My mom has a titanium rod in her spine and she doesn't set off any metal detectors ;-}

Titanium is widely used in operations, and they won't set off detectors. I just flew last month, no problems at all. I was more worried about my bags of Protein Powder that looked like kilo's of cocaine! :P

I'm glad to hear that you're doing well!

The staples are our buddies for life. Your body will grow a thick layer of scar tissue around them. It shouldn't ever be any issue for getting through security at the airport. My doctor's office did tell me though to make sure to tell any MRI technician/doctor before they do any kind of MRI scan on you. I don't imagine that it would immediately disqualify you from having an MRI but that's something they'd definitely wanna know.

I have the white tongue from being in ketosis too =( Brush brush and tongue scraper!

THIS has been my concern! I fly out in a couple weeks and wanted to take Protein Powder in a Ziploc, but figured that would be a bad idea lol. Trying to avoid buying million dollar Protein from a convenience store. I think I may order some that comes in a pack to take with me.

I did fine with two sandwich bags full of Protein powder, not a peep. Oh, and for the MRI question - I've had two since surgery, no problems there either with the staples. But do tell them!

I personally travel a lot I have found the best way to carry protien powders is to just buy them in serving sized packets. They travel well, they're pre measured, and nobody ever questions what it is.

Plus you can easily carry a variety of brands & flavors.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
