Sleeved On The 27Th, And I Feel Strangely Good!

Hi All,

Greetings from the Sooner State! I'm one of the apparently large group who had VSG surgery on 27 June. My hospital experience wasn't stellar; I was more or less unable to comply with the requests to drink the little shot glasses of water or to get out of bed on the day of surgery except to go to the restroom. I felt like crap but never nauseated - just listless.

I got to come home the evening of the 28th after passing my leak test and things have been consistently getting better since I walked in the door that night. I took one pain pill because I was sore but not overly so so I've avoided those since. I would definitely take them if necessary but since I got home I really haven't felt more than a few fleeting minutes of pain that passed quickly (probably gas).

My nutritionist/surgeon had me on clears until 48 hours had passed since the surgery, then I was able to add in shakes, skim milk and supposedly fat free cottage cheese. I have never been clear on exactly which of my supplements (multivitamin cap-gel, sublingual B12, Vit E cap-gel, Ester-C tablet and liquid Calcium Citrate) I'm supposed to be taking at this stage in addition to the news prescription meds prescribed by my doctor (Actigall, Protonix) but I'm taking them all. My new stomach has liked everything but the cottage cheese so I just took a couple of bites of that and will try again in a few.

Today my stomach seems to be making normal sounds/noises again - very much like what it did pre-surgery. I am up to 4-16.9 oz. bottles of water a day and will continue to add in protein. But I do have a couple of questions...I'm curious as to whether it is common to "super glue" the incisions together? Anybody else glued instead of having steri-strips? Also, I have two good-sized dark bruises on either side of my lower abdomen, but not near any of the incision points. What are those from? I didn't see them until I got home and they are definitely more pronounced than any of the bruises associated with the incision points.

Glad to be on "this side" of surgery and looking forward to sharing the journey with you!

I was sleeved on the 25th and my incisions are glued closed.

  • The bruises are probably from your anti-blood clot shots. Did you get any of those?

Run the cottage cheese through your cuisinart and your sleeve won't mind.

I was sleeved on June 25th and mine were glued too. I have the bruises from the anti clotting meds. I have no pain and went to church today. Everyone was shocked to see me out. I feel great...really great! I didn't expect it.

Me either. I had planned on having my niece come over to help me with laundry, expecting that it would be difficult for me. But last night I did 3 loads with no problems. I just put the clothes in the basket and put the basket on the scale to make sure it wasn't over 10 pounds. I want to vacuum my floors, but I know that my vacuum is over 10 pounds, so I'll wait for Dh to help with that.

I was glued on the 25th but the glue is starting to peel is that normal? Should I be worried?

Mine peeled too and was nothing to be concerned about. It's all part of the natural process.

Take a look at your discharge papers from the hospital. They should tell you what to watch for as far as your incisions and infection.

I was sleeved on 6/27 & had horrible n/v (mainly dry heaves cos of nothing to eat since night before). I also had horrible withdraw from not being able to take my antidepressant for 33 hours. Was not fun. After my leak test, they said I couldn't go home unless I was walking & drinking. So I started doing both cos I did not sleep well in the hospital at all. I got to go home on 6-28 and have been slowly increasing my intake. First day was tough. Took all day to drink 28oz of isopure while also sipping water. My doc said to take the multivitamin & B12 w/folic acid as soon as I got home & started having my liquid proteins. They did say wait 2 weeks to start with the calcium citrate. I also have the super glue on my stitches and they're slowly starting to come off. I'm leaving them alone & letting them do their own thing. I do have 2 big nasty bruises on a couple of them & a giant bruise on my upper left arm. The stomach ones are prolly from blood thinners and the arm one is prolly from them lifting me onto and off OR table. I passed out on the way to OR lol
