Question How Long Are You Off Work After The Sleeve?

If I have the sleeve, how long would I be off work?

Depends on who your surgeon is and how you have reacted to other surgeries. What type of work do you do? What does your surgeon say?

I was back within a week, traveling across country even but I had surgery as an outpatient. Biggest concern is making sure you stay hydrated and get in protein/calories so you are not overly weak. I was really tired each night for the first month and usually went to bed early.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I love my sleeve and have no regrets.

If you have short term disability benefits available, I would say take as much time as you can. I went back to work at 10 days and was very tired. You will for sure have a lifting restriction, mine was no more than 20 lbs for 6 weeks. All the other specifics will be up to your surgeon.

I have taken 4 weeks of short term disability. This is my 3rd week out from surgery and I now feel pretty good and could be going back next week but looking forward to the extra time.

I really need help on this one! I am brand new here. My sleeve is in 2 days. When I asked my surgeon how long I would be off, he said up to 6 weeks! I was surprised, but I'll go with it. I understand that everyone is different, and heal at different levels.

When I told my co-worker that it could be 6 weeks she said she knew people who were only off work for 8 days, and the longest was 2 weeks ! So I feel like I have this pressure to return to work ASAP, only because my co-worker knows she won't be able to take off while I'm gone. I have promised myself that I won't return a minute sooner than I feel like I can.

I certainly do not want any complications that would keep me off longer than normal. I guess my question is, "what is normal/average time off?".

  • Everyone from my work who has done the sleeve has taken 6 weeks off becase the doctor will sign off for 6 weeks. However, I asked this question becase I can't possibly take 6 weeks off, I don't have that much sick time so therefore I won't get paid. A friend of mine said she got hers done on a Wed and she went back to work on Monday. I guess everyone is different, but I was just asking what other people were doing. Basically for you who is getting a hard time from your work....you just take off as much time as you need. Don't let anyone pressure you into anything. When YOU are ready go back, then go back.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
