So today I got scheduled for my first consult with my surgeon. I'm scheduled for July 10. Does anyone know of a good place to get a list of really good questions? I'm afraid of missing something I should be asking. I was wondering what some things you guys asked when seeing your surgeon for the first time. I tried to search but got no good results. :) Thanks in advance!

When can you exercise? That is the most common ? I see, how soon do you have to wait to have sex? I'm assuming that you've seen the nutritionist already, as they usually answer all the diet questions.

Ask about your surgeon about his success rate and complication rate. Ask how long his patients have to be off work on average. Questions about recovery, how long before you can do things. How long is the hospital stay. His goal weight for you, follow up care....do you see him or a PA. Anything that comes to your mind. Anything you need an answer with to be comfortable with your decision to have surgery. No question is dumb.

I kept a piece of paper in my purse and every time I came up with a question, no matter where I was I wrote it down. I never can remember the questions I should ask in my head. It helps to write it down anytime I think of it.

I know there are a couple of threads here discussing this (there may even be a pinned one somewhere). You can also use the search function in the top right corner to find more threads.

Here's a few of the things I'm going to ask my surgeon on my next visit (I've already had the initial one where we talked about complications and the surgical options available to me.)

What size bougie do you typically use? (This determines the size of your stomach.)

Do you over-stitch the staples?

How long should I expect to be in the hospital?

How long is post-op follow up care typically? Are you seen once or twice or are you monitored for a longer time period?

Is there a support group associated with your practice you can join?

That's a few of them anyway.

I don't mean to give you a non-answer, but this topic has come up at least two or three times a week forever. If you search for phrases like "consultation questions" or "surgeon questions" or similar you should be able to find TONS of lists of questions that people have posted. I'll see if I can track some down for you.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
