I am only three weeks post-op and I am figuring out that I can not tolerate any whey Protein, including isolate and concentrate. I was lactose intolerant before the surgery so I knew to look for lactose free products. Most Protein products that are lactose free, but made from whey are made with whey protein isolate.

I have been unable to move forward to mushies/pureed foods. My doctor put me on Carafate (used to coat the stomach, mainly with ulcer patients) to help with all the acid I was feeling.

Please respond and let me know what your favorite brand of pea protein or soy protein is.

Thanks!

Hey Alice:

Well, first off, I'm sorry you've hit these snags. It's a hassle, but it's workable. I couldn't tolerate any sort of Protein powder or Protein Drink, so I went with a "real food" approach. For you, with lactose and whey intolerance, that might be a good path, too--can you tolerate eggs? Egg white Protein is readily available at our local Whole Foods. I ended up mixing smoothies that used yogurt (mine was Greek/dairy; you might could use soy with a soy-based Protein Powder or egg-white Protein Powder to up the protein factor), white Beans (low-sodium, rinsed thoroughly), almond milk, and some flavoring, usually chocolate in the beginning because I could tolerate that, zapped in the blender with a couple of ice cubes if I had forgotten to freeze the container of yogurt. :-)

Let us know what works--I'd be interested, as I had such a rough time finding something that would work, and I try to provide ideas/suggestions/support to new sleevers who have the same issues. Glad you started the carafate--that should be really helpful.

I think pea Protein is horrible. I don't mind soy Proteins. You might also want to try hemp Protein, which has decent Fiber and Omega-3s. It's not the best but I'd still rate it higher than pea protein. I've not tried it, but rice protein is also available. Of those, soy and hemp will be considered better "multi purpose" Proteins. This may help:

Well, yesterday turned out to be a great sleeve day.

This was the first day since surgery that I had no whey Protein isolate or concentrate. When I was drinking my Protein shakes, I had no idea I was allergic. Allergy is the word I am using because it caused my throat & stomach to swell - not sure if correct term.

I switched to Spiru-tein because it was readily available and is 100% soy based. This is only temporary because it is pretty high in carbs for 1 shake (12-15 carbs/shake). I also found a nutritionist who will help me get back on track.

Finally, excited about my surgery, instead of regretting it.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Looking forward to trying the egg Protein. Bought a sampe of Jay Robbs.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
