Did You Or Are You Keeping Your Sleeve A Secret?

Recommended Posts

I told my immediate family and a couple close friends. I don't hide it tho and don't expect others to either. If someone asks how I am loosing all the weight I will tell them. Most ppl are jealous.

I was sleeved Monday and only told two people; a friend who's struggled with his weight and whom I stayed with in San Diego for a couple days before going to mex for surgery. And one co worker whom I'd heard was considering wls. I figure I'll decide to tell others as I go along.

I was sleeved May 14th. I only told my husband, son and mother. I'm a very private person. I don't want to have to answer questions at work or family gatherings.

I waited to tell those that would be critical till I had to; my mother is one - I told her when I got my date; my grandmother- the day before.

These two are the only ones I really didn't want to discourage me. My children weren't for it; but who cares what they say; they barely have weight issues cause they gave seen me be far my whole life and listen to my husband complain about it and they are all three careful about their weight. My oldest worked at the hospital in the catering department before delivering meals to the bariatric patients so she knew what kind of non food I would be eating and she said F THAT!

All of my co workers have been supportive; I work at WINN DIXIE as a floating cake decorator; most of my coworkers are female ; two of which had bypass; one 7 years ago and one year ago!

My best friend didn't like it but oh well!

My family knows; but through my husband all our mutual family and friends know; because my Husband put the crap on Facebook !!!! Uuuugggggg I told him not to; but I'm pretty open with everything anyway; just wanted to answer questions after not before. I have been overweight for my age since I were 5; had strep throat ; tonsillitis and asthma all during childhood; took a lot of steroids and my family was poor or penny punchers so we ate poorly; I despise a lot of vegetables raw and don't like fish. Now I'm taking control of those bad habits and cravings! No shame!

Until I'm approved and surgery is scheduled, I'm telling only a handful of people...husband, best friend, one friend who's had it done, my boss and 3 work friends.

Once I'm approved, I'll likely take out a billboard and tell the world! LOL I'm one if those "open book" kinds of people and I'm sure I'll blabber to anyone who'll listen to my story. ;)

I struggled with infertility and chose to be really open about that too. It was amazing how many other people shared their own stories bc I did.

I like to think I'm helping educate some people and let others know they aren't alone. However, to tell or not is a private decision and there is no right or wrong answer.

Well, I too decided to keep it a secret. So don't feel bad about it, it's your decision and yours alone. The only ones that know are my family members (mom, dad, sister and brother, and only my two closest friends) The main reason of why I decided to keep it a secret is because there's still a lot of ignorance regarding these procedures. And also, lets just say I don't have the best work environment. So I don't wanted to hear unwanted comments like "you took the easy way out" or my personal favorite "I heard of someone who died during the procedure".

Truth is, this decision is one of the most important decisions of your life since it's not reversible, and you are obviously informed of the risks that any procedure has. So you don't want to hear hater comments about it, you want people who support you and who are happy with you being happy. Maybe if I had a different environment in my office, it would be great to tell everyone about it, but since I was aware of how things really are and how difficult it is for me to trust people, I decided to keep it to myself.

So it's great that I found this forum, a lot of people here are very supportive (thank you everybody), and it's cool to have someone else who is going trough the same stuff you are telling you that it's going to be OK, that what you are felling right now it's completely normal, and how much things are going to be better from now on, not only because of great you'll look, but how good you will feel.

I hate when they say you took the easy way out. There is nothing easy about it,it is a tool that you are given to use along with diet and exercise to help with weight lose.but like anything else you use the tool wrong its not going to work

I have only told a select few. My boyfriend knows, but my mother doesn't. My mother would not be as supportive. I figured once I start loosing, I'll just say I am on a diet and working out, which would not necessarily be a lie. Only my supervisor and Director know at work and one person i am close to, because she is taking me to the hospital.

I am a nurse in an emergency room and almost all my co-workers know that I had the sleeve done. I am not ashamed. I was mmorbidly obese, having trouble with every day tasks for my job. I see this as a tool and to me it goves me some accountibility in the food choices that I make. There is SOOOO much temptation at work since there always goodies in the breakroom. all the staff is very encouraging.

I too have been open to most people. Except the in laws. My reason for that was my husband had gastric bypass last year. He did want to keep HIS a secret but felt he needed to tell his parents. He told them specifically not to tell his bros, sis and step family. 2 weeks later we were up at his dads and his WHOLE family knew. I was so upset they would treat him that way. That is the only reason I am not saying anything. I feel like they lost the opportunity to be given information. It's petty I know. But we have never had a good relationship. But those that know, have all been supportive.

I told everyone because I am a complete blabber mouth :-)

I am now 3 years out and I still tell strangers if we are chatting and they mention a diet issue and are obviously in the range to be considered for the VSG. I wish I had known about the op earlier but it was quite a new procedure in Europ 3 years ago. My family and friends have been really supportive. I am still waiting for the critical comment because I will be ready with a comeback but it has never happened. I do say I was self pay (I was, £5,500) though as people in the UK are judgy of the NHS being used for this op.

People are woefully ignorant about WLS, and our press seem to only understand the lapband and the bypass. I have written to journalists asking them to look at the VSG but I guess they don't want to write good news stories. Far better to scare the cr@p out of people!

My family and co-workers all know. No point in keeping it a secret. I work in a large office building and they way I figure, if its successful and helps just one other person, then thats ok by me. I have not told my Facebook friends. Eventually I probably will.

Only my parents, siblings and a couple of close coworkers know. I'm sure questions will be asked but its nobody's business. I just tell them I'm eating better. Which I am.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
