Who To Tell And Not Tell....

Recommended Posts

Ironically enough, if we do the exercise and workout that's required you will lose weight. People cut back on their diets, workout and exercise and lose weight everyday. We just need help with our diets. So, I don't worry about people being shocked at my weight loss. What I do worry about are all the negative and sly remarks I may receive from friends and family. I've witnessed so many people being verbally abused for choosing to save their lives with WLS. I'm trying to get my life back and I don't want to be stressed about all the negative comments being made. These are all the people who made all the fat remarks about me recently, my close family members. Everybody's situation is different so we have to do what's best for us. You see, obesity often times causes depression so, WLS will help. However, being riddiculed and talked about by your family and friends can make those feeling return. So friend, I choose to be completely happy with my WLS without giving anyone else ammunition to make me second guess my decision, feeling bad about myself.

Some women are cruel and I guarantee you each one of my 5 sisters with take a jab at me as they have done previously.

Instead, I'm going to exercise all the time, invite them on walks/run with me and dance my fat away. All of them can continue to look and guess all they want and it would all just be speculation. Why is it their business anyway? They wouldn't care if I had my hemroids removed and a pap smear. LOL!

I say do what's best for you but I choose to confide in my husband, doctor and best friend.

God Bless!

I just had someone on Facebook post on my wall asking how I'm losing weight. I told them the truth. Calorie restriction. I eat 700-1000 calories per day.

You go girl!!

That's all they need to know. I hope you post a video of you in a Zumba class next week. LOL!!

Get all the witnesses and support that you need from the gym, trainer and/or a boot camp. People will not question hard work and discipline.

WLS is a very wonderful thing and it saves lives. However, you can tell people on a need to know bases and everybody doesn't need to know.

I personally am not bothered to tell people I'm going thru WLS. Im not going to make it seem I'm doing this on my own..bc I'm not. I need help and I'm ok admitting that. I've had nothing but positivity with sharing my experience and then even if someone does say something...who cares? It's not about them, it's about me and I'll be damned if I allow anyone's opinion to affect me any longer...think about it isn't that where a lot of our eating stems from? Emotions? Bad self talk? Others opinions? Negative comments? I'm taking my life back and for me admitting it is part of the process in regaining myself. I hope that by being open & honest about this it will help someone else looking to change their lives too..I didn't know one of my best friend's had WLS, finding out about her journey gave me the strength to start my own.

Good luck to all!! =)

Yes, good luck to you!

I wish we were all fortunate enough to have your support system.

We should not make others feel bad no matter what they decide to do. I personally don't think its anyone else's business how I loose weight. I choose to let them guess. The keyword is I and you can be an open book if you choose. I will not think less of you, I applaud you for putting your health first..

How long has it been since you've had the sleeve?

How much have you lost?

My surgery is scheduled for June 7, 2012.

Before surgery very few people knew. My mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, grandma, and uncle knew. I told my closest friends and a few select coworkers that I knew would be supportive, including my boss. I wanted to avoid the naysayers and be comfortable with my decision and focus on the pre-op stuff prior to undergoing the procedure. Coworkers that didn't know were simply told I was going on medical leave. Since surgery, I have told a few more people, but have limited the knowledge simply because it is still new (surgery 4/24/12) and I have lots of things to focus on yet. (I did tell one neighbor, a nurse, who I thought would be supportive. Instead, she tried to talk me out of my surgeon, who I love, so I never brought it up with her again.)

It's a personal decision who you tell and you have to do what is right for you. I'm not ashamed of my decision, I just don't want to have to explain why I made it.

I personally told my sister and two of my friends. My sister told my parents and brother. I asked my parents not to tell anyone but they can't hold water!! My dad told my Grandma who called and talked to me until I told her (I know she already knew). I have not told my best childhood friend because she has made it clear she is against it. No one at my job know about it. I just feel I don't have to explain my decision to anyone. It's my life and my body and my decision to share my business.

I don't think Shoe_Vixen was trying to make anyone feel bad about not telling people. She started her post with the word personally so that's how I took her post - as her personal opinion.

I've started to share my plans with family because, frankly I'm excited and tend to get obsessive about things like this. It's definitely a personal choice who you tell or even if you choose to share with no one.

It's definitely not my intent to make anyone feel bad about their choice or make anyone feel ashamed, truly it wasnt. Im excited about this new journey & I chose to share it. Yes, I am lucky to have a good support system, there are a few people who try to say little things but I learned a long time ago that we can't change how anyone else feels or thinks, just the way we do..so I ignore them =)

Good luck to you too!

I understand....

Thank God you are blessed with a loving family.

The only way for me to avoid ridicule is for me to divorce my family (especially my sisters).

I'm truly thankful for my husband and to this forum. Otherwise, I wouldnt have anyone to share my WLS with.

I just want to take this journey and not have to justify myself.

I've had a few friends who walked into a room discovering everyone was talking negatively about her and WLS.

Another friend was betrayed in a room full of people after everyone was complimenting her. A friend decided to tell everyone she looks good just because she had surgery and without it she looked bad.

I dont want this drama...

God Bless!

The very few people who have made negative comments to me soon regretted their words. Especially since one of them was the obese aunt who has had 20 different surgeries because of her diabetes. She made a snide remark about me to another aunt and the second aunt told the obese aunt "Well, how's YOUR diet and exercise plan working for you? Lissa had ONE surgery to your 20!" It seems that it's always the person who has the least "right" to say something negative who does come out with the cutting remarks... and that tells me that their remark is based in jealousy.

I'm VERY open, as many here know, about my surgery and about my journey. If someone else doesn't like it or wants to be negative, they can be negative somewhere else. :)

I was surprised how supportive people have been. Seems like they are actually interested in learning about it. They may be talking about me behing my back but so far all has been positive. My mom keeps saying she supports me but she worries. Since we r going to costa rica for 11 days I kinda had to tell most everyone. I've had enough time to tell a few at a time.

I've chosen be very open about my decision to do VSG. The only person who's reacted negatively was the salesclerk at Catherine's because she knows she going to low a good customer! I really needed to put it out into the universe, so to speak, so that I would have as much support and encouragement as possible. .

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
