Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have done nothing but read through this site for the last 2 days and finally caught up with what each of you have been through and what you have achieved. All of you are inspirational.

So where to begin ? My husband and I have been livinging in Singapore for a few years because of his work commitments. We are both extreamly overweight with shocking BMI's. because of his position here we both have top medical coverage. After lots of soul searching and research, we decided that we would both get sleeved ! Yeah felt so good to make the decision together to get healthy for the last time. First step ensure we were covered by insurance. Not a chance ! Considered to be cosmetic surgery here. Desperate to have the opp now after all the time we took to decide, so we said okay let's pay for it, this will increase both of our lives. Not a chance! The first thing every single surgeon wanted to know before they had even met us was what Nationality ? The minute they new we were expats the dollar signs clicked over and the cost was going to be 30k each. I can not tell you how devastated we have been.

Left it alone for a few days and have now come up with another plan ( will not let this beat me now we are committed)

I called our medical insurance company in Aus and asked them if they covered the opp tick. Also asked if I release the suspension we have on our membership how long would it be before we could have the opp, " as soon as we can org it " yeah. This will mean organizing everything from here and returning to Aus 1week before opp and returning to Singapore 2 weeks after but I'm okay with that. Long way still to go but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It will mean we have to continue to pay 6 mth worth of medical insurance once we leave before we can suspend it again but that's a small price to pay when you consider the 60k it will cost us here. I'll keep you updated, sorry about the life story I just needed to vent.

Hi and welcome. This sounds like a great plan and much more affordable for both of you. How exciting that you will have the operation at the same time and both experience the benefits together. Have you decided who will do your surgery and have you contacted them regarding pre op requirements such as a psychologist and dietician consultation? I winder if you will need to see the surgeon before the surgery or if they will book you both site unseen. You will need to obtain referrals from a GP in Australia to a surgeon too. You may need to come back for a brief visit to get everything organised? At least afterwards you will be able to have a holiday as the recovery is really easy. Very excited for you both and we loom forward to an update from you when you have further news.

You will also be out of pocket for gap fees between $5,000 - $6,000 each, as private medical and medicare don't cover everything unfortunately, but it will still work out cheaper for you both. Maybe you can negotiate a special two for one deal with your surgeon???!!!

Hi Thank You, so excited. I have sent email to Dr Reg Lord at St Vincent's and Craig Taylor at O Cinic in Sydney as that is where we are from. Explaining our situation and all of our details weight, BMI'S etc and asked them to contact me. I suggested that we were both due for full yearly medicals here. So if they could tell me what bloodwork they need or scans we could have them done now and email them to them. Also suggested maybe a Skype appointment with the surgeon, nutritionist and either see a psychiatrist over here or also by Skype.

That was 2 days ago still no reply, I'm just hoping they get back to us one way or the other. So I can investigate others or come up with something else.

Hi all! 19 days til my op! So exciting! But got a little disheartened when I visited my new dietician on Tuesday (I moved so had to find a new one) and was told that my goal to get to 80kg was a bit optimistic :( I'm currently around 145kg and 174cm tall. She said that from data taken from patients shows that I'm likely to get to 95kg.

Anyone out there lost big numbers? I totally want to prove her wrong but am secretly now worried I can't make 80kg

Please make me feel better lol

Donna xo

PS love reading about everyone's journey on this thread!

Hi Donna- I was 173kg at surgery on 4 September last year. I am now 89 kg- so a loss of 84 kg in (almost) 12 months. My dr had a goal for me of 93 kg and she thought it would take 18 months :) I see her in four weeks so she should get a nice surprise. I plan to lose another 10 kg and then see how I feel but would like to get to 73-75 kg in the end if I can but will let my body dictate that a little and see where I am comfortable :) hope that helps!! Cheers Liss

Great transformation Scotty but it doesn't look like you will need much corrective surgery. I have heard you should wait for up to two years before additional surgery to sculpt as it takes a while for your body to reach it's final state. I would like a inner thigh lift and mini arm lift, but won't look at it seriously for at least another year.

I have sent email to Dr Reg Lord at St Vincent's and Craig Taylor at O Cinic in Sydney as that is where we are from.

Craig Taylor was my surgeon and I was/am v happy with my choice. I don't know him personally or a lengthy history of his work - just got his name off the web, rang his office (and others) and liked what i heard.

He is quite conservative - all patients in hospital 4 nights with excellent preventative care re clots and leaks, and I thought that was terrific. I've needed major surgery before and have experienced both good and bad, and felt well cared for on this occasion - which was v important to me. I've read hundreds of posts on this forum and I'm yet to be convinced that a short hospital stay is right for anyone with this op. From my experience he doesn't charge any more than others ($5K out of pocket), despite providing more hands-on care in that first week.

I disagree that recovery is "easy", or rather that you should expect it to be. Although personally I had no complications and breezed through the whole thing, it's a BIG op and there's definitely the potential for things to go wrong occasionally, so best to be in a good hospital with excellent care close to hand. I chose Mater but Craig Taylor works out of other hospitals too. Mater is closest to his rooms (just round the corner). His fees include dietician and psych - not sure how many visits but I've had 3 and 1 respectively so far, in 4 months. Anaesthetist fees and all hospital pathology also included.

Congrats on your decisions and good luck with it all. PM me if you want any more info on my experience.

Thanks Susan that's fantastic information. I'm just waiting to hear back from him and to find out if he can work with our situation.

How long after your first appointment with him was your surgery ?

Dons' date=' I started at 150 kgs and before the plastics I landed in the 77-79 range, so 80 is definitely doable. I was aiming for 80 at first as well.

I did have almost 5 kgs of skin that was removed, so will be interested to see where I land now.

Thanks Ali <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I.caught a glimpse of my arms today in the mirror while changing the compression garment, they are still puffy and bloated, with no bat wings hanging down...they look just normal..yehaaa...I have never had normal arms.

I am still carrying a fair bit of Fluid and draining a fair bit of stuff still so will see where my weight lands during the next week.

I am getting to go home from hospital today but still have 4 drains to monitor. But better than 4 more days in hospital[/quote']

Fantastic! I am so happy for you! I bet you can't wait to jump on those scales! Don't be too disappointed if it isn't as low as would hope -like you said you are still full of fluid!

You will be out shopping for new clothes in no time!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
