I am not finding it easy to eat socially. Today at lunch I wasn't paying attention, got too full, and had to leave the restaurant and ended up vomiting on the sidewalk. How embarrassing! I'm struggling with getting in enough Protein and calories. Tonight I'm going to give myself a break and have some ice cream. I have the calories and I'm really craving something that will go down easily nail so I am really craving a peaceful meal by myself with no socializing to distract me.

Tomorrow we are going rafting and doing other Water sports, then camping overnight. I'm looking forward to the activities but I hope the food is manageable. I made some requests so hopefully it will work out.

Other than the eating, I'm having a great time.

Pre-packed Protein shakes Misty - they'll keep your Protein, calorie and Fluid requirements up, and allow you to "soldier on" even when food is hard. I have a steady supply of Aussie Bodies coffee flavour for when I'm out and about (30g protein). I'm sure you'll be able to find something suitable in a supermarket or larger pharmacy (I'm assuming you're in a big city like Mumbai). I find Soups the easiest thing to get down in social situations - hard to get to "vomit point" with liquids. Not sure how prolific India is re Soups though. Stay away from the rice - it can cause no end of problems in the early days.

Good luck!

Unless your dietician has advised you to stick with Protein Shakes post op don't go there. Mine did not. You will need to be on liquids for a period of time. I found miso Soup sachets from Coles quite good, apple juice, tea, coffee etc? Are you under a dietician as it is crucial at this time?

Thanks kelliv yes seeing the dietician in an hour, for my last visit before op tomorrow. I think I just need to calm down, sometimes I read and read threads on here and get myself into a tiz. I think because I am so scared about the op I am over thinking things and worrying.... Just want to be on top of everything, I think they call it control issues lol!

Relax if you can as the operation really is a breeze. Try not to over analyse if you can. We are all here to help and support you and don't want to hear you are stressed out. We'll be thinking of you tomorrow and please let us know how it all goes. Cheers

For those of you in Brisbane I just went to a great cafe recommended by my dietician. It is called Primal Pantry and it's in Tenneriffe. 100% Paleo & gluten free. I had what was called cauliflower fried rice but it had shaved cauliflower instead of rice and was delicious. I also tried a little bit of an Asian salad with fish cakes mixed through. Definitely recommend it. Their menu also looks really interesting.

Good luck for tomorrow! Here's hoping everything goes really well for u. I'm sure it will. Keep us posted on how ur doing.

I contacted my dietician today (don't really know why because she is useless) and told her about my difficulties with the Optifast. Her solution was "it must be a tummy bug because u shouldn't b feeling sick".......really? A tummy bug.....no! Have tomorrow off work so am finding a new dietician. Last night I didn't even try to have one for dinner because I just couldn't face the thought of feeling sick for hours after, and I know that is not good for me. All she was concerned about was what I was going to do after the op (because she wants me to continue with the shakes)

Thanks everyone for your moral support! I spoke to my dietician and he has put my mind at ease. I have started a journal to help with my fears. With the Optifast I get how you feel, in fact I was disappointed to learn that for two weeks after I will still have to drink the vile stuff. Have you thought about opti slim? Change your dietician - it's our journey no one else's and it has to work for us just as much as the dietician. I am signing off for tonight, not to read any more horror stories in the us section of post op!! I will let all of you wonderful supportive angels know how I go on the other side. And misty hope you have got it sorted in India! Hugs

Good idea to find a new dietician. I changed from my original one and am very happy I did so. Good Luck.

hi Helmc2

Good idea to look for another dietician. Reach out to Aussiegirl as she did pre op and post op without shakes so she may be able to offer you some advise.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
