Hi everyone, I've been a bit quiet lately, however, I have been watching everyone's great progress.

Welcome back Sarah jp....I'm not sure if you have caught up with the fact that we now have the same Surgeon and I know he is not good with empathy, although I find him much more relaxed than he used to be. :) I'm also losing slowly and I don't think he's going to be happy when I see him in 3 weeks. Would you like to meet and have a coffee, it might help to have a chat? I don't work, so my time is fairly flexible, once we get past the School holidays. I know a few people who have the same Surgeon, maybe we could start a 'mini' Support group here in Melbourne??????

Have a great day.

Michele

Hi Michele

A get together for people Melbourne (Australia) would be a great idea. It would have to be more central to everyone then Mornington. But I'm sure once we work out who's interested we could find a place to suit everyone. Or we could just catch up for coffee as you said. I have to work around uni, but catching up would be a good idea maybe swop some self help ideas and how to get on stephens good side....

I couldn't believe he wasn't happy with 5kgs since my last appointment. I had worked my but off over the last 3 months attending the gym some time up to 5 days a week I have a personal trainer as well. Something I Cant really afford but I'm doing it to help my motivation. Was a bit of a downer when he went on about changing my diet habit's and the weight would come off quicker. I'm scared my skin will end up sagging around me if I lose it any quicker. I was watching a show about ugly health conditions and this girl had a lapband lost her weight and she was on the show showing how ugly her body got after losing the weight. She had to have 2 full body lifts to have all the access skin from around her abdomen.

But he has shocked me as well. A few months back he gave me a hug before I left his room saying that his hoping that some time soon he will be able to put both his hand together around me. I seriously was like in my head.... OMG Stephen you have a kind side.

Anyway Its great to hear people are doing so well..

Sarah

Hi all! Just checking in from Singapore airport where I am having a (fraction of a) lovely bowl of noodles. I have quite some time until I board for Delhi. My flights gate is not even assigned yet. I will tell you it's hard to log meals across time zones!

Hi guys. I started opti today and have a question already!!! Both the shakes and the bars are making me dry reach uncontrollably. I held my nose and skulled down the shake only to dry heave for about 1/2 hour afterwards. Let me just say sitting at my desk dry reaching is NOT a great look. Any tips.......?

I must say I know what you mean! The chicken Soup gave me the same reaction, in fact I couldn't stand the smell let only swallow it. I have preserved with the chocolate shake made on super cold Water - after a few days I got use to it. You could look at opti slim products instead or perhaps the low carb celebrity slim, check with the dietician :-). Good luck I have 3 days left thank god lol

Yep.That happened to me.Plus I had a rash and diarrhea afterwards.Spoke to my dietician who thinks I am allergic to the soy but that may not be your issue. The stuff is not the nicest is it? In the end I found I could usually handle 2 Optifast or optislim meals plus one very low calorie meal (limited dairy and carbs) but was still a bit nauseous occasionally. You can have three tiny meals per day under some programs but it is hard to keep the portions right when you are in the hungry phase.

I had to stay under 800 cals per day preferably averaging 750 cals per day and myfitnesspal was great with tracking that. So keep trying a small amount of different samples - I threw away so much expensive product until I found a few I could stomach - and talk to your dietician about the alternatives. I lost 10 kg from when I saw Dr Mosse to the day of surgery last week.It can be done! Good luck :)

Drinking really cold and blending with ice or berries or a shot of espresso coffee makes them more palatable. Hope this helps.

Optifast may not taste great, but it is the one all of the docs and dieticians recommend for pre surgery as it's the most balanced nutritionally. Good luck, it will get easier.

It sounds like you might have an intolerance to one of the ingredients (it's very common) and I would suggest that you contact your Surgeon or Dietitian and tell them what is happening. There are alternatives to the Optifast such as a high Protein/Low Carb diet.

Good Luck with your pre op preparation.

Sarah jp and K8ee,

Why don't we choose a date and place and get together for a coffee? Maybe we could plan a bigger 'get together' a few weeks down the track.

K8ee, who was your Surgeon and have you had your surgery yet? K8ee, what's your availability for meeting for coffee?

Sarah which Uni are you at, so that we can choose a place to meet?

I had my sleeve done 10 weeks ago at Cabrini.

I look forward to meeting both of you.

Thanks everyone for ur words of support.

Dicoyte - 3 days! I'm super jealous.

Lessismore - I have dietician issues. I didn't really get anything out of my dietician appointment at all. I did speak to my surgeon about it and his response was "you don't have to go back to her" so now I am on the hunt for a new one. If it doesn't settle down though I think I will ring the surgeon

Kelliv and mybigescape - I am definitely going to try this. Thankyou

One_elle - so above re dietician.

Thankyou to everyone for ur suggestions. I know I can do this and I will survive and it is so good to know I have heaps of experience and support to rely on. ????

My surgeon was Ray McHenry from lap surgery Australia. I had my surgery May 7th.

I can only meet on a weekend. Saturday or Sunday. I work full time in the city.

Look forward to meeting you!

I was on a brand called kickstart - but from what I have heard most of these Meal Replacement shakes are just horrible - I never liked milkshakes so even though I wasn't

vomiting there were times I was just about holding my nose to get them down. I found very cold Water and lots of ice made it not quite as bad too. I only tried the Soups once and that was enough - the chocolate Optifast bars were about the only thing I got used to. I could probably eat one of those now but I wouldn't touch a shake for the rest of my life! However, I did get through it and lost 9kg pre op and did the pre-op for 1 day short of 4 weeks - just shows what you can do when you are working towards the prize!

I hope you get it sorted. Maybe talk to Aussiegirl as I know she did the pre-op without doing any shakes.< /p>

HelmC2, I don't see a Dietitian but I do know of a Bariatric Dietitian who does phone consultations, she is located in Qld, on the Gold Coast Ithink???? Some of the girls here already consult with her so they may be able to give you her contact details. Her name is Fiona Brown and she does seem to be 'on the ball'.

If you choose to go to Fiona, feel free to tell her I gave you her name.

Anyway, good luck with your pre op phase and finding a new Dietitian.

May I ask who your Surgeon is, seems like his support is minimal which makes it difficult for you.

We are all here to support you through this journey.

Best Wishes

Michele

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
