Thread Killers

I developed a lot of acid reflux and for a time, I could keep it in check by not eating after 8 PM, taking meds, etc. Finally, though, none of that helped much and my lungs and esophagus were suffering as a result (especially my esophagus), and I had a CT scan and barium swallow study, which showed a dilated esophagus. So I had to be unfilled for almost 3 weeks and eat only liquids and mushies. Now I am being re-filled, but slowly.

I have had one small fill and I hate this level of restriction. I cannot eat bread, but I can eat a lot of almost everything else, if I wait about 10 minutes after my first few bites. I sort of have first bite syndrome, only it's more like 6 bite syndrome. And if something gets stuck, it's hard as hell to get it back up.

I have gained 16 pounds and it is so depressing. I refuse to buy bigger clothes, so my wardrobe is extremely limited right now. I have 2 pair of jeans that I can squeeze into, but that's about all, except for a few pair of dress pants that were loose as all get out last summer.

I have been working out 2 hours a day, 5 days a week at the gym the last couple of weeks. Next Monday I will find out if it's done any good. I haven't stepped on the scale since the last time I saw my surgeon. I was afraid I would kill myself if I did....LOL

My suggestion would be to consult your doctor. Find out if your restriction is good, per a fluoro study. Then, once that's tweaked, just suck it up and do what you have to do.....make good food choices and get some exercise. There is no other way. I have discovered, two years post-op, that whatever you did to lose the weight, you have to keep on doing or it won't stay off. Sad to say, but that's the cold, hard truth.

French Fries are pure evil! Both FF and their demonic cousins the potato chips. I am so lucky that I have zero ability to get them past "puckers". I swear, fried potatoes turn to joint compound in my pouch. I dance with glee at the thought of how may calories I am NOT consuming from potatoes.

BJean, not sure if this helps much, but I always start my self-sabotage when I hit a new low on the scale. I am thrilled, but there is a small part of me that gets seriously freaked. If I do some pampering, the food issues are more manageable. Try a mani/pedi or a soak with a great book/CD.

This is so me. It has to be the very strangest phenomenon of this weight loss journey. Just goes to show you that that primal instinct part of your brain is hard at work 24/7 at trying to 'ensure your survival', eh?

Morsaille: You are not only aces at computer picture posting, you give good bandster words of wisdom. I beat anexoria ass well.

Before ever getting the band when I would work hard at losing some lbs, as soon as I realized a decent loss I would binge until I undid all my good work. I stopped getting on the scale because of it. You know the accepted wisdom is that we sabbotage ourselves because it is "all in our heads" but I am not so sure about that. I think there is a whole lot of psysiological/biochemical stuff that we have no clue about. I honestly think that all this is very complicated. We just try to think that it is simple - calories in, calories out but I just don't think it's that simple.

Yah, I agree. Losing weight is very, very complicated, and a lot of it hinges on weird physical/metabolic and genetic related issues. Weight is much more complex than a simple calories in = weight on equation. We all know people who can eat for six and yet remain thin and others who gain easily. The business of simple calories and the food groups from which you get them do play a role, however. I see people who have their shopping carts full of easy calories: soda and chips and stuff like that.

Carlene: With your reflux, was it at night after you laid down in bed? Did you actually have normal reflux, with burning, etc.?

I didn't have any idea that I was experiencing reflux until the nutritionist asked me if I ever cough up white stuff. I said I do sometimes and she said that it is acid reflux. I had a hiatal hernia for years before the LB surgery and the doc repaired it at the same time he placed the LB. Am I just overeating and that's what's causing the problem? I know before when I was losing at a good pace, I didn't seem to have this problem.

Sorry if I'm grossing everyone out, but I am afraid I have a problem and I'd like to figure it out because I am so busy with a new business that I'm having a hard time getting away from it all and getting into the doc's office.

Yes....always at night, even though I did not eat after 7 or 8 PM, and it burned like crazy (tasted awful, too).

I had to keep a plastic cup beside the bed because of the "spit up".

Sorry about the reflux, it sounds horrible (and scary). It is one of those things everyone talks about; but is one of the things I have managed to avoid so far. Can you suck on a Tums - you'd pick up some Calcium at the same time. My grandparents (unbanded of course) kept them right next to the bed.

...anyone remember the mactal? I think I found it's cousin. I need to go looking for the code. I'll post it next time.

I swear to you if my ex husband had not had a vasectomy, that is what he and his current gf's children would look like....He is a weasel (that is putting it oh so nicely) and she is just plain homely....it seriously could be their love child!!!! Poor little thing!!!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
