I woke up in recovery in achy pain. I opened my eyes, looked at the nurse & said "Hurt!". She said, "Hun, I have something for you right now." she pushed a button & I went back to blissful sleep...my surgery took 45 min, so it was around 9am when I first woke up. I woke up the second time at 2:15am in my private room! No pain, no catheter, just an IV. I got up, made peepee, rinsed out my mouth & went back to bed after hitting my morpheine button-pain pumps come around rarely in my life, so I made FULL use of mine! Lol! I had a great experience, no nausea, no great pain, just mild discomfort at most. The 5th day home, the discomfort came back, but my surgeon had prescribed me liquid hydrocodone, and that did the trick. I'll be 5 weeks post op in 2 days, and I'm sooo happy I was sleeved! I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

I was shocked to wake up in recovery because I truly believed I was going to die during surgery. My first word was "What?" LOL After a bit, I was wheeled to my hospital room and I insisted on walking from that bed to the hospital bed, then I complained the hospital bed was too soft and decided I'd rather sit in the chair. My stomach muscles and thigh muscles hurt. The stomach was like I'd done too many sit ups and my thighs hurt because I was trying to use them instead of my stomach when I got up to walk. Surgery was at 8am, and I was walking the floor by 2pm. I didn't use any pain meds after about 8pm that night, but I am categorically opposed to narcotics in any form.

If your doctor prescribes liquid pain medicine, be absolutely sure you have the proper measuring device for it. Mine was dosed in metric and I didn't have a metric spoon, so I couldnt take the one dose of pain meds I wanted when I got home. My bottle of loritab is still unopened at 7 months out.

I remember taking the doctor as I got on the table, then the next thought was "I'm alive!" the pain was clearly there but it was manageable. Kinda felt like a very bad menstrual episode but then mine tend to be painful (I even went without pain meds during the menstrual cycle preceding the surgery to "prep"). They kept the meds coming at regular intervals (didn't have a pump). I was on IV fluids for 24 hours. The barium swallow was the most nasty part, don't know what the heck they made me swallow but that thing was awful!! I didn't have a catheter. I was instructed to stop all fluids at midnight the night before my surgery, which was at 5pm. I peed a lot after surgery, it hurt to get out of bed but it was more like the pain you get after a million crunches :) Water was the enemy! It hurt to drink it, Popsicles and I became best buds. Lived on that the first couple of days. broth was ok but swallowing was a bit of an issue and even now (3 weeks out) I still have kinda hit my chest every now and then when I drink or eat something that decides it doesn't want to go down smoothly. One other thing, my taste buds are from another bloody planet right now! I have purchased Welch's white grape juice pre-op, it tasted foul in my mouth post-op! I couldn't stand the chicken broth and bouillions I'd purchased; I will find that I waste food as I try to navigate what to see because I can only have a few bites (if I can stomach the taste of it). What has really worked for me: First and second week - Caramel Apple Spice from Starbucks. The extremes work well (ie. iced/slushy or hot drinks). For protein: I have a magic bullet and in it I put some water, a scoop of whey Protein Isolate 28 vanilla flavor (from GNC), one Fage 0% fat Greek plain yogurt, frozen fruit (strawberries/blueberries) and blend. Packs in 46g of protein! Please take care of your incisions. I purchased Hibiclens from CVS along with an antiseptic/antibacterial spray. I struggled with the Cipro antibiotic, even when I cut the pill into two, the taste was just horrid, but I am good now. I have one more incision that needs to fully heal up, but otherwise I am good. Oh, you may feel weak/wiped out easily the first few weeks, so be prepared for that (especially after you head back to work). Well good luck guys! Hope you all have smooth surgeries and recoveries!

I just had my surgery on the 22nd. I had hardly any pain in the hospital. No nausea. I was on a morphine pump so pain wasn't an issue, thank God! Now I'm home and 2 days after surgery I can say I'm not having nearly as many issues as I expected. The gas is annoying and uncomfortable, but that's only temporary and not too big of a deal. My biggest problem is not knowing whether I can drink or not. I don't feel hungry and I don't feel full. So I'm just confused. I need to get more Water and Protein in but I'm not sure how much I can drink at a time.

Long story short---don't worry too much!! It's not nearly as scary as it seems, and it'll all be worth it!

I was completely calm until I hopped up on the gurney headed for the surgery room. (in Mexico, by myself, no insurance, I KNEW I was making the right decision.)

but yeah, I freaked a little, ya know a few staining tears and last ditch messages to send my husband and then lights out.

I woke up scared, a little startled and was having trouble breathing. Like enough to where I got more scared cause I couldn't draw a deep breath (or any breath, but what do I know, it was like someone else said dreamlike) and all my "Spanish" was out the door, all I could beg to do was to walk. The nurses laughed. "No, no, not yet."

They took my vitals and turns out my BP was super low, I had monstrous nausea and they had yet to

administer any pain meds, and yeah it was painful. (I didnt have my own button, only nurses were giving the goods) The lack of breathing and nausea was still a big issue after a little while and unfortunately the "good stuff" for pain was aiding in my low BP. So I was given some pretty mild pain meds- which was in my pre-surgery plan. I originally wanted to take it easy, so that's what my doc was honoring. (dumb, I would do that different, haha)

Anyways, after the first full night it was way easier! Uncomfortable type of pain, like doing a million crunches. I swiftly moved to my hotel after the barium swallow (super gross) still had some nausau but didn't take any pain meds after my discharge which was on day 4. Personally, if I ever have surgery again, I'll ask for something about an hour before and then let them know about my BP and I'll be fine.

Best thing I ever did, not one regret!!

Also wondering what the avereage hospital stay was for others?

I was under my Dr.'s care for 4 days. In the hospital for 2, then the hotel for recovery for 2 days. I que'ed in customs and caught my flight home no problem. I think it was a Thursday thru Monday/Tue trip which I "worked" while I was away, luckily I am remote.

To be honest, I didn't have an ideal time right after surgery so don't take my experience as the norm. Most people had little nausea and almost no pain, I was just an unlucky one.

I woke up freaking out in the recovery room trying to pull off my oxygen mask while saying, "I can't breathe" over and over. Obviously, I could since I was talking AND I had an oxygen mask. No idea why I was pulling at it frantically. I fell back asleep and woke back up in my room. The nurse took out my catheter within an hour after that. I got up to go to the bathroom and it felt like I was peeing myself. Turns out one of my incisions was leaking.

I threw up A LOT and used my morphine button pretty much every time I was allowed, since it had a timer. I was in the hospital for four days because of complications. Like I said, I was the 1% who didn't have a super easy time like most people.

I don't remember waking up till I was in my room. My surgeon also puts all his patients in ICU unit for the first day or so. I had discomfort/pain on my left side mostly but used the morphine button for pain. I also had nausae but my nurse was so good about giving me something to stop that.

Whe I returned home I did have problems trying to get my liquids down at first. I was not taking in all the liquids that I was supposed to so I ended up being dehydrated. That kind of put a delay on things since I was having shortness of breaths and dizziness. This lasted for about 4 days until I called my surgeon and went in to see him. Blood test were taken and reaults were dehydration. Once that was taken cared of I felt great. I am now 6 weeks post-op and down 31 lbs. The hardest thing for me right now is learning not to eat fast.

Good Luck to you and don't worry if you don't have the same experience as others. Everyone is different.

I had my surgery on March 16th after 7:30 am it was supposed to be 7:10 but they couldn't get the IV in. I remember being taken to the operating room and placed on the table then lights out... I woke up sometime around noon briefly and fell asleep off and on until after 4pm. I was told I would be out of the hospital after 3pm the next day but that didn't happen, I was told I would be walking four hours after surgery that didn't happen. I went for a walk some time after midnight. I was having LOTS of chest pain and couldn't take a deep breath due the air pumped in the stomach and they did EKG and chest x-rays to make sure. After I started burping more that pain eased.

Saturday and Sunday until about 3pm I could only drink about 8oz total. Sunday afternoon I could do a two to three oz every few hours. I slept alot. Most of the pain was getting out of the bed or in it... it was too high. I have one spot on my right side that aches the most and it is due to the internal stitches in the abdominal wall.

Monday the 19th at around 8am one of the doctors told me he was going to release me.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
