Birth Control- Mirena? Get Off Before My Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

I have just read somewhere that some surgeons require you to be off birth control and smoking weeks before and after surgery due to blood clots. Has anyone had any experience with this? I have Mirena intrauterine and wonder if I will have to have it removed. Of course I will ask the doc, but wanted to others experience.

I just asked my nurse case worker this exact question Monday b/c I have plans on getting the Mirena at the beginning of the year. She told me that she's almost positive that it's ok but it mostly depends on your surgeon.

My surgeon had me remove mine 2 weeks before surgery...He said due to my weight, he didn't want to take any chances... He's extremely cautious and meticulous about EVERYTHING!!!!

I have the IUD (10 years w/ no hormones) and the doctors said this one was perfect because there was no hormones and no risk of blood clots. My coordinator and doctor told me that birth control was a must because of the high chance of getting pregnant right after. They told me not to take it out whatsoever.

But i've heard that every doctor is different.

I didn't have to have my Mirena removed. I hear you on the pain part though. The doctor felt that enough was done to prevent clots during surgery it wasn't necessary. Each doctor is different, just sharing my experience.

ok.. maybe I am really missing something here... The subject of my post was "Birth Control- Mirena?". Now tonight the subject has been changed, adding "Get Off Before My Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?"

I know I didn't do that because its not my natural tone. I thought this had happened to me before, but I just thought I was crazy. Is it just a moderator function? Maybe clarifying my subject for me?

Also noticed I don't have the option of emoticons or formatting anymore either. But that is probably different.

As far as the pain, I wouldn't say it was as bad as child birth or anything. I just think I wasn't expecting it. The nurse said this is going to feel like a little pinch. Maybe I'm just a baby, but it was a big pinch. If I were to do it again, I would ask for something to take the edge off. Also, after the procedure they made me stay there for a little while to make sure I was OK. I was, until I got on the road! OMGosh. I had the cold sweats, nausea, weakness. I was so glad to see the driveway.thank

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
