Low hemoglobin may post-pone surgery!!

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm fairly new to this site but I really find it to be a Godsend!! My surgery is SUPPOSED to take place this Wed. August 10th. I'm on my liquid diet and I have to say it's so much harder then I thought. Anyway, when I was having my PAT done a week and a half ago at the very end of my visit the Dr. said..."Oh btw your hemoglobin/iron levels are very low. Sorry, but we will have to post-pone surgery" Just like that!!! Like he was saying ..."Oh, nice weather were having"

I was in complete shock bc everything else was great! I asked him what I should do and he just said your primary will need to figure it out. WTH!!!! (He is just the PAT Dr not my surgeon) I know it is only for my safety but he could have been a little more sympathetic!!!! Thankfully, my primary got me in ASAP for 5 Iron infusions. Has anyone ever heard of these? I finished my last one on Monday and just had my blooded rechecked today. My hemoglobin was 10.7, The PAT Dr said I had to be 11 or over (it will keep rising each day for the next few weeks) I'm sooooo close and I'm waiting to hear back from his office. They are supposed to call me tomorrow and I'm just hoping and praying that all is OK for Wed. I'm so ready to move forward and everything is set...child care...etc. Has anyone heard of or had a similar experience? I'm soooo frustrated (and hungry and cranky!!!) They were supposed to let me know today...I just hope I get the call tomorrow so I know WTH is going on!!! I may be on this liquid diet for nothing at this point!!! (If that's the case I will have to hurt someone!!!) Any feedback or encouragement is appreciated!!! Thanks to you all!!! This website is such a comfort!

Iron infusions are certainly the quickest way to raise your Iron level. A few years ago I had became very ill due to reflux and my iron level became so low that I had to have infusions several times a week for 3 weeks. It brought my level up quick so hopefully you will see the same results. Good luck to you!

Yeah, I was also low with a 10.5 count...but after 3 weeks of increased Iron, I was 11.7 the day before surgery. lol I started taking my Iron again at 3 weeks post-op... I had a textbook awesome recovery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
