Hi VerticalSleeveTalk community! My name is Bernie and I am a surgical technology student. I have to write a paper on pre and post operative surgery experiences with information obtained from a blog. Would anyone be willing to help me out by answering a few questions? I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi Bernie, I don't mind helping out. I had the Lap Band in 2005 and then had a revision to the Gastric Sleeve last month. You can email me if you'd like @ kekerene@hotmail.com, just put your name in the subject line so I don't delete it thinking it's junk mail.

Thank you so much Kekerene! I wish I could do this via email but we have to use the blog and then print it out. Would this be ok?

1. Vertical sleeve gastrectomy

2. Obesity

3. Obesity had lead to uncontrolled diabetes, (I was taking almost 400 units of insulin a day)

4. I have been overweight almost 30 years but the last 10 years it was causing a lot of co-morbidities

5. It was an elective surgery, but the insurance paid for it as it was considered medically necessary.

6. 6 months of a doctor supervised diet, cardiac workup, nutrition consult, psychiatric eval and some basic bloodwork.

7. 10 days of a liquid diet before surgery, bowel cleansing night before surgery

8. No preoperative issues thank goodness

9. I am only 4 days post-op, but with the 10 day liquid diet and my post surgical result I have lost 35 pounds

10. My first post-op visit will be tomorrow at 5 days.

11. The only post op "complication" was almost two solid days of hiccups. Thankfully it has been almost 24 hours without them. They were very painful. If I hadn't had them I would not have needed any pain meds.

12. My surgeon requires 5 years of support group attendance and office follow up.

Bernie, all good questions but to get the real spectrum of WLS, I think there should be more questions you should be asking. I am sure you will get plenty of answers from the great peope on this forum on your listed questions. I have listed a few below if you want to branch out, just a recommendation.

1. Why so many insurance companies do not cover WLS and our experience with them.

2. Why many people choose to self-pay and go to another country to have the surgery.

3. Why an insurance company will not approve many people that have Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and High BMI, many companies do not consider this medically necessary and would be considered "elective" on your #5 question.

4. Why some view surgery as "an easy way out", which it is not, the surgery is simply a tool.

There are many people on the forum and had the surgery for a lot of different reasons. To lose the weight, of course but to change their lives and for medical reasons.

Good luck on your paper.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
