I had a Mirena put in in February of this year due to excessive bleeding and hormonal imbalance.. Since then e'thing has been great!!! I was wondering if any of you have a Mirena or another IUD and if there have been any issues w/ it since having VSG... I was researching the band and found that several women have had lots of problems w/ Mirena after being banded.. I haven't found anything concerning VSG and Mirena.. Thanks!!

Any of the hormonal birth control methods can either slow down, or halt weight loss completely post-op. I've seen it happen far too many times on here and on obesityhelp.com I've read 100s of stories of ladies going on hormonal BC and then stall out for weeks to months, and that goes for RNY, VSG or/and the band. During rapid weight loss, our bodies dump stored hormones from fat cells, our systems get all out of whack.

Keep researching. I had the band, I won't bash it too much because it's not polite, but don't waste your time or money on it due to the rising complication and revision rates ! ! !

I used to get Depo shots for about 8 yrs before finding out that it was one of the reason's I was gaining weight, after I had my son and they asked which birth control I wanted, I said anything that doesn't have homones I came to find out that all hormonal birth controls have that as a side affect, you could or could not have that side affect, but after what happen to me with the Depo shot I decided not to risk it... I have an IUD now I don't remember the name of it I just know it's the one that last 10 yrs and doesn't have homones.

forgot to say I am only 6 days post op i've lost weight, but I really can't tell you if my IUD has any effect yet.

I was just concerned because they instruct you to stop taking birth control so many weeks before surgery and I have a Mirena w/ low doses of hormones.... I think it's cool because the dose is soooo low... Thanks for responding!!

The hormome in Mirena works differently than bc pills to prevent pregnancy. I have Mirena, am a VSG patient, and a Midwife. You should be fine!

I've had my IUD (Mirena) for 2 years now and have had no complications when I had my sleeve surgery last year. I even had a tubal ligation performed at the same time and decided since the IUD completely eliminated my period to just keep it in. No problems at all. Good luck!

There's a couple of topics on here that I was referring to with others experiences with Mirena, and other bc options.

I think the main issue with hormonal BC is the concern for blood clots. You're already at a risk with surgery, and then add in the risk factor with hormonal BC increases that risk.

Everyone's body responds differently post-op. I can, off the top of my head, count at a minimum of 6 women on obesityhelp that got an IUD (Mirena, and the other options) post-VSG and had issues losing weight. The other ladies have shared that even with the low-dose oral BC pills their hormones went crazy, and their weight stalled or stopped, or they struggled with the crazy mood swings.

Since the hormones in Mirena do not work systemically, they should NOT increase the chances of a blood clot. So says my boss, the OB. I believe him..... I didn't have a clot. I think the most important factor with blood clots is making sure to walk as much as possible, as soon as possible.

I think hormonal BC pills are evil and that nobody should take them.

My surgeon requires all BC stopped 1 month prior to surgery, including removing IUD/Mirena

I cannot take Mirena because I have had a Pulmonary embolism but I do the copper IUD and it's great.

Oh, I know how Mirena works, but some surgeons are way more conservative than others. Clots happen, they suck, and there's some stories on here about them showing up after patients are discharged. So, I agree that moving is extremely important.

I don't do any birth control so it wasn't a concern for me.

If someone has had a clot in the past, the mirena IUD can still be use (they don't recommend putting it in someone with an active DVT).. It's progesterone. Estrogen is contraindicated for people with DVT's. The progesterone is mostly local, in the uterus but there is minute amounts in the blood stream. The weight gain is minimal or none. The paraguard (10 yr iud) has no hormone so if hormone is a concern, it's a great choice. It's amazing to me that there are surgeons who requires removal of the IUD before surgery because to me if you get pregnant for whatever reason you will GAIN A WHOLE LOT MORE WEIGHT. Just my opinion, I'm an ob/gyn

I have the MIrena IUD and have had it during my lapband surgeries and my sleeve. Had no issues with weight gain. Dr told me since the hormones are released in the reproductive tract, it works differently. A previous post explained it well. I have 3 different doctors put the lapband in/take it out and do the sleeve. None of the 3 even mentioned removing the Mirena. That's over the top (in my opinion). I barely get my period and have zero cramps. I highly recommend it!
