Be careful taking Tums - Calcium carbonate - if you are not drinking enough Water and are not active enough it can lead to kidney stones, very painful!

It takes a day or two for the Prilosec to kick in. In the meantime, Tums plus Pepcid or Zantac should help on a daily basis. Keep drinking Water as it will help wash the acid down, and avoid coffee, which can irritate an already irritated stomach. Tums shouldn't be a concern for the short amount of time you'll be taking it.

Gaviscon works wonders for rebound reflux. The Prilosec can take up to 10-14 days to fully kick in and make sure you're taking it on an empty stomach, and waiting at least an hour before eating.

Also, with tums or rolaids, the Calcium carbonate can cause rebound reflux.

No tums, just Malox, Pepcid, and Zantac! Another thing I noticed is that I threw up a few times in the past 2 days, never did that since surgery! Now, I just ate 2 shrimp, and feel so sick! Also been dizzy, light headed, my speech is all jacked like the words are coming out backwards, I told the girls to keep the Water in the pool instead of the tub! Weird **** like that. My hand keeps getting numb.

So you think even if I just missed the Prilosec for 2 - 3 days it will still take 10-14 days to build back up?? I sure hope not!!!

Thanks for your help!!!

I forgot to mention that you should suck on the tums like a pice of hard candy and not chew them. You should only need one or two at the most to get rid of the heartburn.

As far as you mixing up your speach and having tingly hands - I think you really need to talk to your doctor about that. Thats not normal. Good Luck.

So sorry to hear you are going through this!! I found that Prilosec was not really doing the trick for me and I switched to Zegerid OTC. Of course, it is a little more expensive because it is a new prodict, but supposedly has an additive that helps absorption. It works like a charm!

ALso, my Dr told me I can up my dose to 2 pills a day (one in the AM one in the PM) if I needed to. I wouldn't do it forever, but it may help you. Not sure about how long the pills take becuase I have never missed a day.

Honestly, Zegerid seemed to zap my acid when the Prilosec was falling short. YOu might be able to find a coupon for it online - its pricey.

Hang in there!!!

Prilosec is time released, and it takes time to build up in our systems to work fully. It might not take the full time to kick back in, but I'd take some Gaviscon to help soothe the stomach. I'd steer clear of Tums or Rolaids due to the Calcium carbonate. I was out with friends and had some breakthrough reflux. A friend offered me some Tums, I chewed them up because I was so miserable. It helped for about 30 minutes, then the burning was about 10 times more intense. I knew that calcium carbonate could cause rebound reflux, I just was in an unexpected situation and needed some relief before I could get home.

The tingly/weird speech stuff is kind of weird. The vomiting not so weird since you've been off the Prilosec a couple of days. Stick with bland foods for a couple of days, get some yogurt in your system in the event you're having some bacteria imbalance going on with the increased acid and vomiting. Stay hydrated too.

I honestly kinda hesitated to reply when I saw all the experts replying but here’s my input anyway J. I have a big issue with acid reflux my self and I would tell you few things:

- If you are just like me and you get so depressed when u suffer from the acid reflux symptoms then most probably you think 1000 times before you eat or drink anything because this will make the symptoms worse! This is how you feel the numbing and you are struggling with the words because this happens to me exactly this is simply “nutrients insufficiency”.

- I do not know if you tried Nexium or pariet so far or not? Anyway That’s what I do when symptoms are high. I take either one of them on empty stomach in the morning have food or Water an hour later. I keep eating stuff I know for a fact that it wouldn’t make my symptoms worse like no fatty, heavy or greasy food, NOTHING WITH Tomato, no citrus as well. The point is: play it safe as much as you can that day. Stop eating at 7 or 8 PM and take the Nexium 40 or pariet 20, 2 hours later at least or before you sleep. During the day if you feel you have the symptoms I second recommend what Tiffykins said of taking Gaviscon. Do the same steps for the next day please J

- The third day you hopefully feel better by now “I feel better my self after this plan” Now try to focus on your Protein intakes and Vitamins as well from now on. I am so sure that you are not making the required effort on that… Last thing is again I second Tiffykins opinion that Prilosec take up to 14 days to kick out, so my v valued advice for you is when you find your right medicine just stick to it. It usually takes shorter time for the medicine to relief you if the system is used to it from before. So what ever works for you stick to it even if you ran out, have the gaviscon until you get your medicine back!! Hope any of this make sense to you

Feel good and get better…

Lila

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
