Anyone else sick of the pre-op diet???

Hey all,

Well i'm on day 8 of 14 for my pre-op diet (about 700 calories a day) before my surgery next Friday May 27th with Dr. Keith Kim in Celebration. It really hasnt been that hard (I had already cut myself to 1300 calories and working out almost daily about 1.5 months ago), a few bouts with low energy and of course just being sick of Protein shakes and smelling and seeing everyone else's food has been a challenge! I had to go to a luncheon on Wednesday and BOY did everything look and smell good. I wont name the foods b/c its bad enough I had to endure it, no need to drag you all along with me :) Everyone kinda looked at me weird but noone asked and if they had, I was planning on saying I had a late lunch appt right after so as not to have to divulge personal info.

Not sure who all is on a pre-op diet but here is mine:

7:30am - Protein shake with 8 oz of fat free-milk (Protein powder is the Vitamin Shoppe Brand, 100 Cal, 24g Protein, 0g fat, <1g Carb)

10:30am - 8oz Water with benefiber mixed in

12:30pm - Protein Shake with 8 oz of water, no sugar added vanilla yogurt (separate, not mixed with the shake), 8 oz water with benefiber mixed in

2:30pm - 1cup raw carrots (can be 1 cup of any raw veggie, but carrots are crunchy so it takes longer to chew and helps with the texture-withdrawal i'm having from the rest of the diet)

5:30pm - Protein Shake with 8 oz of water, 8 oz water with benefiber mixed in

7:30pm - Protein Shake with 8 oz of fat free-milk

So that means that now, on day 8, as of 12:36pm, i have consumed a whopping 30 shakes!!! Only 24 to go!!

Overall, like i said, its not that bad but is kind of annoying...its working though, have lost about 10lbs since starting it and am getting really psyched about the surgery!

Anyone else doing a similar diet?

Thanks!

I am scheduled for the sleeve surgery on June 12th. I leave for a vacation to Toronto on the 4th so I'll be on the preop diet while on my vacation--uck! I will have two protien shakes perday and then a small meal for dinner--veggies and a portion of lean meat. I will begin tomorrow with my pre-preop diet (self-imposed) of replacing breakfast with a protein shake. What about preop vitamins? Is anyone else getting set by taking extra supplements?

Kelly- Was that a per day food intake or per meal?? I start my pre-op diet at the end of June but if I drop a few more pounds before, I only have to do it for a few days. Your diett sounds fairly simple!

Thanks,

Leslie

You know, even though I am postop- I am still sick of the pre-op diet! :D It is harder than being post-op so just know that. Even though I am going on my fifth week of thin liquids including that 2 weeks, I now have no hunger and that is a BIG difference.

Know that you are really helping yourself get ready for this new phase in your life, that it really will help your liver be ready for surgery, and that aside from the first few days of post surgery recovery when you may have trouble getting anything down- it really will never be this bad again. You will be able to eat anything you want again in the future and you will finally lose the weight.

Good luck to everyone on the 27th! I will be your den Mom , being 18 days ahead of you. :P

I think you are doing the right thing starting now and her is why. I cheated twice in my two weeks- once at a wedding we photographed because I just couldn't work 10 hours without eating- I had some chicken and vegetable only. I also had a piece of pizza three days before my surgery- I had gone to my GP to possible have mu surgery canceled due to a cold and my husband, knowing how I'd be feeling if it was canceled, got me a small pizza with my favorite toppings a- then my surgery was not canceled. I ate the toppings off of a piece and felt fine about it. I followed the diet carefully every other day- nothing but liquids, 70 grams protein a day- lots of water- and lose 18 pounds pre surgery.

My doctor specifically said that my liver looked great. So, shocking as this advice will seem- I think you can pick one day on your vacation and have a nice dinner. Just one- and not if it will throw you off the plan completely. STarting early will give you even more assurance. And vacation next year will be wonderful!
