diet coke

I am so craving diet coke. If I take a few sips will it do any harm? I need to get past this craving!

It is likely to cause you immediate distress and pain. Will it do long term damage? Probably not but why risk it?

I inadvertently drank a "sparkling" fruit juice a few weeks ago (carbonated) because I asked for apple juice and this is what I received. I immediately had a tremendous sense of pressure under my breast bone and it took a good 20-30 minutes for it to go away! I will never intentionally drink a carbonated beverage again! :(

I edited to add that I only took that one sip and realized it was carbonated. When I read this post over I realized it sound like I drank the whole thing and I didn't. I was only about 2 weeks out from surgery though so I can see that the experience might be completely different once your tummy has healed.

You can let the diet coke go flat and then drink it. I know it is not the same but it is better than nothing. I can do damage to your sleeve if you drink it fully carbonated.

Its like crack, stay away if you can...

I need to quit it yet again. If your in the first 6 months don't even think about it for sure.

I should add this is only my opinion, unfortunately it has no effect on me different that it did pre-sleeve except I burp a bit more. I picked up the habit after 6 months out again and wish I had not. It has not done anything to hurt me as far as the sleeve goes, it just has no nutritional value and I am very very addicted to it.

You are going to get varying opinions, "facts", and heated emotions on this one. What I can tell you is my story. But, remember, it's my experience and your results may vary.

I started back to my Pepsi Max at 3 months. Had a little pressure, but not uncomfortable. I'm 15+ months out now & drink diet soda whenever I want. I use it as a "treat" when I'm head hungry. Doesn't seem to cause any cravings for me & hasn't impacted my restriction at all.

Beer? That's another story. Causes a lot of pressure and makes me feel a bit nauseated. I've actually thrown up once due to the beer in my tummy. Why the difference? NO CLUE. But, I'll stick with wine as my drink of choice now.

AMEN, it is crack. Except my drug of choice was regular coke. Been drinking it since I was a toddler and had to stop cold turkey for this surgery and haven't had one since. I have never like coffee, I used coke to wake me up for the day. Never drank anything else. Sadly, no Water or anything. I don't want to get back on it EVER and hope I never take a sip and can tolerate it.blink.gif

I used to drink diet coke all the time, and I haven't had it since surgery. However, I've noticed a few people that have on this board, and it seems to have no adverse effect. I'd probably say see how you react to it, and take it slowly. My guess is it wouldn't hurt you to have one now and again.

Soda is the only thing that I haven't touched after surgery. The cravings do go away, you just have to fight them within the first 6 months (for me anyhow). And to the person who mentioned beer above, lol you're so right. I took a sip of my SO's beer once completely not thinking about the carbonation and I damn near died lol.

I agree....if you need some that bad open it and let it go flat. It is the carbonation that causes problems with the sleeve. I have found that the Diet cranberry juice over ice had taken away my cravings for soda completely. I know that it can be hard but I thinnk that once you drink some diet coke flat that will be the end of your diet coke. Best of luck

I was a diet Coke addict myself. Try to ditch that stuff. It's so bad for you. If eventually I can have carbinated drinks dow the road I will be adding soda Water to dilute fruit juice as a treat - not as a daily beverage like I used to do. I won't even be using store bought juice with all the crud in it. I have two dwarf citus trees and a pomegrante tree. I juices the fruit and froze it in ice cube trays for when I need it.

When it comes right down to it, NO processed food is going into my body anymore except for the Protein powder. I've been eating better, tastier food since giving up boxed crud. Have you heard what they put in McDonald's hamburgers and chicken McNuggets? Have you read the labels on canned and packaged food?

I will be living on good cheeses, lean steak, crab, lobster, ahi tuna, fresh lean pork, fresh vegetables, yogurt, fish, chicken ... I've never had it so good.

Really, give up on the diet soda. The fresh stuff tastes so much better.

My surgeon is asking me to give up carbonation forever, as it can (possibly) over time, gradually contribute to stretching the stomach. If that is even a REMOTE possibility, I am never, never, NEVER going to touch it!!!! Why would I go through such a life altering event just to gratify my old desires? That's what got me in this mess in the first place! I understand the whole "one bite" thing with food....maybe....but if something risks stretching the stomach? I'm dropping it like a hot rock!!!

I was crazy addicted to regular coke. Have not had it since surgery. Now when I want something other than Water I pick crystal lite tea or sobe Water 0.

At our pre-op class the nurse said, "well, not everyone who went back to soda regained their weight, but everyone who regained their weight went back to soda.." That was enough to cure my cravings, though I was not a big soda drinker. I do not want to fail this, and don't want to find out if this would work for me or not...

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
