African American Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm scheduled to have the sleeve 8/20. Right now my BMI is 47, I'm 287lbs hoping to get to 170 eventually.

I have noticed after reading message boards and looking at youtube that African American women seem to have a different experience with the sleeve than non-AA. Do any of you feel the same?

The food stuff is going to be hard, but for me even harder will be exercise. I'm able to look at myself and say I'm lazy as hell. Maybe some of it is the extra weight making me tired all the time, some of it might be depression, but I know given a choice I'd like to sit my fat ass in front of the TV rather than go to the gym.

How have you all dealt with the exercise issue?

So great to have found a forum for black women. Thanks for putting it up.

Hi. If you like crystal light type drinks get the Isopure ready to drink. They have 40g of Protein mix with Water if you need to cut the sweetness. Not thick at all like a shake. Refreshing actually!

Where can I get the Isopure.... I am 11 days out and are really struggling...

I wish I could hit the gym.... I am only 11 days out & I am now starting to worry about not losing because I am not eating or drinking enough. I am in the soft/mushy stage and really dont have problems keeping stuff down except for a Protein shake I tried....its not the flavor my tummy has been use to and the powder is good but just to thick n sweet...maybe as the weight fall off you will feel more like exercising....good luck

Hi! I'm scheduled for 8/30! I can totally relate with the exercise, I agree, it could be some depression. I hate the way my body feels and looks so I avoid exercise like the plague. My thing is video games, and I can easily sit here 6 hours playing, if its something interesting. What's really sad with me is there is a small workout facility here in my apartment, a pool, and a YMCA down the street...after my sleeve I will have no reason not to go every single day. Keeping you in my prayers! Don't worry, You'll feel like moving soon!

Hello ladies, hope everyone is well. I wanted to share that I have lost a little over 100 pounds ( 50 preop 53 post op) I am so proud of myself.

It took forever for me to get through the process of being approved and finding the right surgeon. There were so many times I just wanted to give up. To anyone who is discouraged, I say stay strong and have faith that it will happen, but when it is ur time.

I still have a long way to go, and the stalls are hard but It is SO worth. I feel so much better physically and mentally. This is just the beginning I had my surgery May 25. I am looking forward to what the future holds.

Have anyone had surgery lately? If so, how did it go? How are you doing? How much weight have you lost?

I had surgery in Mexico Self pay with Dr.Sergio Quinones on 06-August-2012. I am on gastricsleeve.com and have photos of my surgery day and photos of the stomach they removed. I am phoenixrise on there as well if you wanted to read my blog, see my photos, etc. and 51 days out I have went from 273 to 245 lbs. I haven't had any issues with gas that was gone day 4, and I was able to get back to work after 7 days (at a desk job). I will be honest I haven't been exercising as I should. I do have a Myfitnesspal.com which I track my food and exercise on if you get one you can add me Treneik.

Almost one month after surgery,I enrolled in a 10-week fitness boot camp. It kicks my ass but I feel good when I leave. Find something you like...maybe Zumba if you like to dance. Maybe you can do an aerobics video at your own pace at home.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
