VSG & stomach virus

Recommended Posts

Me and 3 out if my 5 kids are all stuck in bed with a mean nasty stomach flu and I wonder if things like this will be worse after surgery ? With 4 of my kids school age and a 6 month old at home reality is that I will be dealing with things like this post op.

My baby was 8 months old when I had surgery and have also 2 older ones at school. The funny thing is that after having my sleeve the 3 of them had nasty stomach flu twice (even my husband) I never caught anything! For the first time after my sleeve I've had a cold last week but nothing major, so I wouldn't let that stop me! Good luck, you will love your sleeve :P

Sadie - I hope that you are feeling better today! I remember the day when I had a load of little ones (I have 5 also - but now they are 19-25 years old!!) and they passed around the stomach flu......ish! I too have dreaded the thought of getting sick after VSG.....Oh Lord! Can't even begin to go there!

I hope your household is recovering well and things all clear up for the holidays - which are upon us! Have a wonderful Christmas - I bet it's crazy at your house at Christmas. And have a VERY happy new year! Your surgery date will be here before you know it! 2011 is going to be a great year!

Blessings and hugs!

Kim

That's just an icky situation, and I hope y'all get to feeling better soon.

I can tell you just what I've read, and what I've experienced. Because most VSG patients are on an acid reducer(ppi) which can increase our risk for stomach bugs/viruses because the PPI neutralizes the acid in our stomachs which kills off bacteria. But, I have not experienced any worse symptoms when I've had a stomach bug post-vsg that I experienced pre-op. I still take my Prilosec, and I usually load up on greek yogurt or activia yogut and extra Probiotics to help my "good bacteria" fight back and get my GI tract back to normal. I'm one of those people that literally hate to vomit. I will do everything within my being to prevent puking. I do not ever take anti-diarrhea medications. I feel like if my body is trying to get that stuff out, it needs to be out of my body so I avoid pepto, immodium etc etc when diarrhea hits.

The nausea and gas seem to be the same now as pre-op as well. It's typically the nausea that really hits me hard. I tank up on regular gatorade, and suck on pedialyte freezer pops to ensure I stay hydrated.

Thanks guys that's pretty helpful advice and makes me feel

A little more comfortable . At this point I don't think anything could keep me from my surgery . I have 3 different sitters lined out and already paid for our passports.

This is a huge deal with so many kidos ages 14,13,11,9 and my Lyla 6 months. After all this prep and planning wild horses couldn't drive me away. I was just here thinking man being sick sucks and I worried it cod be worse post op

Ohhh speaking from experience this week. Man let me tell you, my babies (4 and 5 yrs old) had the stomach flu and I got it the worst. I got it on Tursday night and by Friday I was puking (I cant stand that one bit) and running to the bathroom inbetween times, I almost moved my bedroom into the bathroom. I finally ate something yesterday but a very small amount. Today is getting a lil better just still running to the bathroom. I took Tiff's advice and have stocked up on the probiotic/prebiotic yogurt and we'll see how it goes. Hopefully you don't get it and everyone in your house has a speedy recovery

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
