Protein drinks gagging me

Recommended Posts

I drink Carnation Instant Breakfast No Sugar with 1 cup of skim milk. It's 13 gr of Protein and 8 oz of your liquids. Remember, you body can only absorb between 20-25 grams at a time so anything more during one sitting is a waste. I found the Bariatric solutions and Muscle Milk disgusting. I had to pour them out.

Vitamin Shoppe for Tight Curves chocolate, vanilla or Berry; one of the few I could tolerate - actually quite tasty! Still drink them everyday - sometimes I drink the ready made EAS carb control when I can get them on sale. Not as good as the Tight Curves tho.

I'm pre-op. I've been testing the waters on Protein drinks & am having a difficult finding anything I can stomach. I'm still searching though. I found this site. Check it out. I've yet to make a purchase but I plan too. If you try them, let us know! Good luck! http://www.bariatriceating.com/ The site was shared by a sleever on a Facebook page.

Do you have any links that support that? I searched online and I asked my nutritionist and they all confirmed that there is no limit. Many Protein drinks have much more than 20-25 grams per serving and I don't think they would make them if it was all wasted?

I have never heard that your body only absorbs a limited amount of Protein. I agree with you Susanne, I don't think they would make a 36g powder if you are only going to absorb a small portion of it. As far as the Carnation Instant Breakfast, what kind of protein is in it? My doctor tells me that the whey isolate absorbs better and you get the best results with it. He also says, you cannot get the protein you need just from the foods you eat at this point, including milk, you really do need that protein substitute for a year after surgery. I guess everyone gets taught differently. But, all in all, the protein drinks still have a long way to go as far as taste go... lol

I don't have any links to support this. My NUT was the one who told me this. This is what I do know about Proteins. There are basically 2 forms...complete and incomplete. Complete are derived from animal Proteins (meats, milk, cheese, eggs, dairy) and incomplete come from vegetables. Incomplete are missing one or more of the amino acids necessary to be considered a complete Protein. I am not sure what type of protein is in a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast, but I know there is 8 grams of complete proteins in the skim milk that is added. The total for the drink is 13 grams of protein. I just responded to the shakes question on this thread. I also used the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup to get my protein in and I can also stomach the Atkins shakes if I need one to go. If you will notice, most of the protein shakes/drinks contain approx. 15 grams of protein.....Atkins, Isopure, Muscle Milk, etc. And, whey protein is a dairy based protein from animals, so it too is a complete protein.

As for a company making a product that contains more protein than necessary, these supplements are typically not regulated by the FDA. There are alot of things on the market that shouldn't be. The protein bullets that contain 35 grams of protein were created for body builders not bariatric patients. Also, in the fine print of the protein bullet that I bought (called Instant liquid Protein Shot 35), it says do not use if you have been given a blood thinner. I was given a blood thinner shot right before I was released from the hospital, so I am avoiding them for awhile.

That's about all I know. I'm just trying to follow this 2 wks of Clear liquids and get through it until I can add cream Soups. I hope this helps.

My doctor recommended drinking the no sugar added Carnation Instant Breakfast and mixing it with 2 tablespoons of powdered milk. All that combined with the cup of milk you mix it in is about 18 grams of protein. You can mix in Protein Powder instead of the powdered milk to get even more protein and it still tastes better than Protein shakes.

I am 2 weeks out and I cannot handle the Protein drinks. I am drinking Premier shakes from costco. I tried the ISO PURE grape and Six Star Muscle from Wal Mart. Just the smell of any of one makes me gag. They don't make me sick or anything but just to get them down is horrible. Any ideas?

I am six days out and having the same trouble. Before surgery these drinks didn't bother me. It seems all my senses are heightened or something. Once thing that works fairly well for me is a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder mixed with 4 oz cranbury juice and 4 oz Water. I know this adds 15 grams of carbs so not everyone may want to try it, but I taste mostly the juice and it overrides the Protein powder flavor.

I'm pre-op as well and on the 2-week liquid diet before surgery. Having the same problem here. I bought several ready-made shakes of different kinds, but haven't found one I like yet. Muscle Milk sucks eggs. The GNC products all left an aftertaste. I'm trying the EAS next, but I'm not hopeful. At this point I'm thinking I'll lose weight just because I can't stomach the Protein shakes. FIVE A DAY??? It's been hard enough to do TWO.

Blech.

I was told by my surgeon that you cannot absorb more than 20 grams of Protein in a sitting. All the educational materials I was given to read before surgery say this same thing.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
