July 2006 Band Crew

Recommended Posts

Leona,

We are about in the same place. I'm 5'2 and 213.5-214!! Maybe we'll hit onederland around the same time. You do have age going for you though, as you are 1/2 my age. But, maybe if I "kick my rear in gear" and actually exercise again, I can make it down there by my bandiversary!!!

Hi, I'm new on this. I'm a old lady compared to you ! I was banded July 12.2006 in T.J. Mexico by Dr. Pedro Kuri. I weighed close to 240 at 5'2''. It was a positive experience for sure. I lost 30lbs the first 6 months with no fill. Went for a fill Sept. 06 they could not get needle in. Tried a different Dr. No luck. I needed a fill. Could not afford trip back from Wa. to Mexico. I called them and they funded the whole trip.(angels) My band had slipped or turned. They repaired it. Gave me a fill. For over a year now I vomit on a regular basis. Not harsh just food comes right back up. However I've only lost about 10 more pounds. And for over 2 months have remained the same. I need to lose 50 more lbs. My regular Dr. found I was very vitimin and Calcium deficiant. And put me on mega doses. He worries about the band. I worry about getting some fill removed since its been over a year and it would seem removing some would make weight loss even worse. I'm very energetic.. Go to the gym. And keep up with my kids and grandkids. I'm just very confused as to what to do. I did speak with the Drs. down there a couple times. They seemed to think this would even out. I am very glad for the banding and even a 40lb loss. At 5'2' I wear a size 14, down from a 20. It goes to show how different we all are. I'm pretty solidly built. I get depressed and discouraged with the vomiting. Its such a casual thing most don't even know I go do it. Those who do ask if I'm bulimic which of course I'm not. The lack of weght loss now has me very discouraged. In fact I picked up 4lbs over the holidays. So I'm sure I absorb calories.

Do I go back to the old starve me miserable dieting pre banding days? Or eat like a bird? I exercise so thats not it. Its very nice to vent and talk to anyone out there who might know something. Thank you all.'

I was banded July 06 and have lost 60 lbs. From size 20 jeans to size 10's!!! Yea!!! I'm overall happy with the band, but it's not going as planned. I can't eat solid foods, they don't seem to get stuck, but my stomach starts hurting and I end up having to vomit it up. I eat really small bites and chew, chew, chew, (most of the time, lol) but it still is a problem. I was put in the hospital a year ago after a severe vomiting episode and my back was "killing" me! Doc thought I might have a blocked intestine, but everything checked out---so then he thought it might have been partially blocked, but resolved itself---well, ever since then I keep having that same stomach pain unless I eat really bland and Soup like foods. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem??? Of course, my reg doc thinks its the band but my band doc thinks its unreleated...I've had two unfills and AM hungry, plus I've had an EGD and everything looked okay. Both my Mom and Dad had all kinds of stomach problems so I'm thinking I just am getting old...49 in April...LOL Has anyone else had anything similar to this happen? Just wondering.

Wow, Karen, that is rough! If your band looks okay, then I wouldn't think it's the band. I am wondering if it's because of the change of diet though. Sounds like you were having some severe problems with vomitting. Were you able to eat at all around the time of the episode that landed you in the hospital? Were you taking any supplements or Fiber or anything? I would go over exactly what you were doing then. Maybe for some reason, your body is not tolerating food anymore because you weren't eating it for a time or something. This is just a thought. By no means do I know or understand what could be happening. I just know my body has changed a lot and I often wonder if I'm getting enough fruits and vegetables in. I do not have vomitting episodes but have had the occasional sliming episode when something is stuck, etc.

Keep us updated on what is happening. I guess you could slowly try and integrate different foods in...one at a time like one does with a baby who is first starting to eat. Hope all goes well!!

GOAL!

As of this morning, I have hit goal. I weigh 174 pounds. At my height, that puts me at a BMI of 24.4.

I am so pleased, I am so much lighter in body and in spirit. I am at peace with my weight and just look forward to life without the constant thoughts of what diet to try next. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me. Your support meant a lot to me.

I lost about 105 pounds in 18 months. I exercise regularly. My fill remains at 3.2. I feel excited about the next year, I feel at peace with my self.

I am looking forward to a Tummy Tuck in the Fall of 08 or early 09. Then I look forward to focusing my energies on everything else wonderful in my life. My dh, my 3 kids and maintaining this awesome and beautiful body.....

Cheers everyone

Paula

Thanks Mary, kind words.

Never surrender until you hit goal. I had people discouraging me from doing the last 2 pounds, telling me I was too skinny, or done, but I wanted that number, damn it.

Now that I got it. I am going to work hard on keeping it there. I am still exercising, I am still eating good clean foods. It feels so good. I wish that for all of you too.

Well folks.....as all of us do, I have a very busy life. I don't post here often because of mine but I just had to today as I've reached a milestone of sorts. I've FINALLY broken through the 200 pound barrier! I am proud to say that as of today, I weigh less than 200#..& I never thought I'd say out loud or in public that I weigh 198.5 pounds! I've successfully lost 85.5# since my journey began back in 2006 & I'm so pleased!

All the best to everyone!

Down to 168, lost 7 since my last post a month ago. I'm finally getting there....

Now, I'm down to 158, but really I am thankful to thedailyplate.com, not the band!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
