how am i going to feel

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for my sleeve on the 21st and have a question about hunger. I know I wont be hungary and my stomach will be tiny.... but... even when my stomach isn't hungery I get shaky and irritable, sometimes even paniky with low blood sugar (not clinicaly low, just uncomfortable). Will I feel like this all the time because I'm not getting enough food to my brain? I'm especially worried about tht post op time when I'm on liquids.

thanks for your thoughts

Stacey,

The first few days were ok, but by day 4 and 5, I really needed something more substantial to feel better. I use Atkins Lo Carb shakes (Walmart, etc), Nutrilite Meal Replacement shakes (Amway/Quixtar) and Premier chocolate Protein Shakes (Costco) usually first thing in the morning. It takes me about 2 hours to get one down - they are 11 oz. I also moved quickly to mashed potatoes, yogurt and potato Soup.

Protein has been the most important thing for me to feel better. I also do milk a couple of times per day. Good comfort food for me.

I think I already gave you the sleeve diet guidelines from Cornell University. They worked good for me.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how "different" you will feel.

I know I was...... I did have "head hunger" further out.. proably 2 months. but it too has passed.

I am not hungry.. and am a year out! Oh- I do think of food, but not like I use to... and if I want something... I will have it, just not in the mass quanities that I did before. But to be honest with you..... food is fuel now. I don't focus on it like I use to.

I wish you well! And G'luck on your surgery!!

Depends on who you talk to : ) The clear liquid thing didn't work for me. A nurse I spoke to said that her dr advised moving to mushie and soft foods quicker was ok if you were able to tolerate it. She was doing similar foods at the same time period and had actually moved to Pasta and other foods faster than me. She was mushing and chewing well tho. The first couple of times I had chicken tho, it sat like a rock in my stomach : ) Now I can eat it just fine.

It was sometime mid to late that first week when I added the shakes. To me, it wasn't that different from yogurt and I was eating that on day 3.

I did have to take very small sips and go very slowly. You will have to see what you tolerate. You may be fine with adding powder to Soup broth or something like that. It just didn't work for me.

Interesting... I tend to bounce back prety fast from most things...

Here's hoping this is one of those things

I am 8 days post-op, my surgery was on March 22nd. I had read lots of posts and it seems most people weren't hungry. So I have been surprised that my stomach is so hungry and gurgling all the time. It has been the worst thing for me along with the heartburn. I did start on chocolate protien shakes mixed with Water about 3 days ago hoping that would help. I hate to say that it hasn't helped with the hunger at all. I am hoping that it gets better when I move to full liquids in 2 days and can have pudding and yogurt with Protein mixed in. I don't seem to have any problem getting the shakes or liquids in at a fairly fast sleeve rate - I have to remind myself not to drink too fast since there does not seem to be a problem with swallowing (for which I am thankful). If anyone else has experienced issues with post-op hunger I would love to know when it gets better.

The good news is that I am down 12 lbs in 8 days which I don't think is too bad for someone with a lower BMI.

Are you taking an anti-acid? I understand acid and/or gas pains can mimic hunger. You might want to check with your surgeon about this.

I am taking Nexium 20 mg daily as prescribed by the doctor and it doesn't seem too help. I will email him to see if I should increase the dose. Thanks

Frankie, i am 8 days post op and feel hunger also..the funny thing is when I was at the doctor they asked if I have been hungry . I told them no, not really but I get this pain in my stomach, like it wants to growl... She said " um, hon, that's hunger!" it has been soooo long since I was hungry, I forgot what it felt like. Sad:). But when I get those feelings I usually take a bite of sf Jello or something and that helps. It is starting to decrease, my worst day was day 5. Everything looked good.

My stomach still gurgles like crazy when I try something new. Made me nervous at first but now I expect it : )

There are definitely times that I feel hungry. Not often but it does happen.

Thanks for everyone's replies on the hunger and gurgling. I still feel really lousy with it. But Dr Aceves did increase my Nexium to twice a day so maybe that will start to help. I also think I am just getting weak from the lack of calories and that is really making me more intolerant of the stomach gurgling and upset. I am on full liquids and can't really find anything that my taste buds will tolerate. I tried yogurt and sugar free fat free pudding and they were both yuk. I am trying to drink the chocolate Protein Drinks 2-3 times a day. I am just praying for this 1st month to be over with so I can have real food and start to get some energy and feel better. Sorry for all the whining.:(

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
