Hi coops,

First off well done on your loss so far. I have a question though. Why does your surgeon feel you shouldn't get to at least a BMI of 25? I don't understand.

Jane x

Hiya Jane...

He says that he doesn't 'believe' in the BMI charts... and that at about 11 stone I will be 'small enough'... I am not so sure though. I still feel like I am carrying a lot of extra weight!

I am really struggling to get rid of it though. I am doing all the right stuff here Jane, and getting frustrated by being such a slow loser... I noticed on your ticker that you are at the lower end of the BMI ... well done you! Any advice on how I can shift the last couple of stone?? Oh and by the way, your LBD pic is amazing x

Hi Coops,

I didn't lose as fast as some of the people in the USA because I think my sleeve was slightly looser. When the loss slowed down I started logging everything I ate and did on the DailyPlate, I started this is October 2009, the op was done in May 2009. This really helped me understand my intakes and Protein levels. Plus the effects of walking for a hour. I majorly ate eggs too, they seemed to keep me full from Breakfast to lunch. lunch would be a chicken or tuna with salad. I would have an apple in the afternoon and then dinner of Protein and green veg. I was pretty rigid and I didn't start drinking booze till I was maybe around 8 stone down. It was quite boring but I didn't feel hungry and once I got in the routine it was easy. Keeping busy at work helped too.

Thanks for the comment re the LBD. It is really worth going the full way down to size I think. It's a big op and a bigger opportonity to put things right, that's how I approached it.

Jane xx

Hiya Jane... thanks for such a swift reply... Your daily intake sounds very familiar.... can I ask, how many cals you took in... currently I bounce between 800-1200 so I think my overall input is about right. I focus on protein first and I am loving the green veggies too! My exercise is boxing twice a week, I do some toning exercises in the house - that is a recent addition! I sometimes walk the dog during the week, which is about an hour and when it is school time I use the gym in work twice a week too... I did go mad on the old exercise at the beginning of the year and my weight loss ground to a halt!

I was told at the beginning of the year that I am peri menopausal, just turned 40... and I am wondering if that has had something to do with my slow loss.... but my meonpause doc said the more weight I can lose the better things will be! I was gonna go into maintance at this point, to stop the frustration... but after that conversation I've decided to push on!

Good to see you about the boards again... x

Hi Coops,

I am post menopausal, I had mine at 38! Spent a few years on HRT, stopped it all before the op. Am OK with it now. I was taking in maybe 600-800 in the early days but I just put my details in DailyPlate (I only used the free version BTW), and took the calories they recommended for losing 2lbs a week. I found I had to eat more to lose, strangely enough. I think the body can go into starvation mode if the calories are too low. Also maybe the exercise you did early on converted fat to muscle which is heavier. Did you lose inches and change clothes size even if the weight stayed the same? I wondered about getting one of the scales that detect the fat % in your body but never actioned that. It would be an idea for you to monitor those changes to get a clue of what's occurring. I hope it all starts moving for you soon.

Hello, I must say: I never had taken any medication in liquid form. That's applied straight after my op.

Never had any difficulties with that part of my life. At 56, with diabetes on board for more than 20 years, I have a nice collection of pills to take every morning. Don't worry too much. See how your new stomach will react.

Thank you, were u able to swallow all your pills straight after the op? I take such a lot, but am hoping that I can manage without some and only have to take the ones that are really needed, it would help if I could have a chat with my nurse, but I never seem to get real people, only ansaphone messages, :-) x

Hello Darling, we're all different.

I took it slowly, one pill at the time.

Crashed the ones I was allowed to.

While in the hospital you can take your meds, if you're nervous, in liquid form. It'll give you a small respite after surgery.

I had mine at King's College at Denmark Hill. I was visited, on my last day, by a hospital pharmacist. She came for an information about my drugs requirements. 3 hours later I was supplied with enough meds to last me for next 4 weeks.

Can you find out about system in your hospital? Some offer meds, some only prescriptions for meds. In both cases you'll be winning.

Thanks, think I will try and talk to someone as I have a few things I need to know for my peace of mind. The funny thing is that I am not a bit concerned about the op, it is post op that is concerning me. It is really good to have sleevers support. I am on the latest injection victoza to control my BS and they haven't even heard of it when I have mentioned it to the medical peeps I have spoken too. :-) x

When is your op? How are you responding to the injections?

hi, my op is on the 9th Oct, I start my pre op diet on the 25th Sept.

The injections have been great for me, my BS was up to 19, Victoza brought it right down to between 7 n 10, also, it causes food to stay longer in the stomach to help with loosing weight, but that wore off after 6months. I'm ringing the bariatric nurse on Monday to check that I will be doing the right diet, she asked if I injected for the diabetes, and I said, yes, but now think she meant insulin, and victoza is not insulin so will check, to be sure. :-) x

Hi :) I can't believe that I have been looking at American websites for over a year and missed this UK one! Hopefully there are still sleevers lurking around to share with.

I had my surgery with Prague Beauty in the Czech Republic on 20th October 2012 so I am a new sleever. I am at the water/protein shake stage (just about to start week 2) and I have lots of queries and comments plus I will be very happy to answer honestly anyone else who is thinking of the surgery or who have had it done x x x x

Thanks! I feel great! I didn't have to do a pre-surgery diet so I really feel for you. To be honest, I've not heard of the milk diet, I thought it was a liquid diet you had to do, but then again, I'm sure you've noticed that there is so many different doctor/nutritionist guidelines out there!

At the moment I am just having Water, Protein Shake and cuppa Soup, however, I am sipping a glass of red wine at the mo, I know, I know I'm terrible but I didn't get the sleeve to stop living altogether!

Where are you having your sleeve done?

I'm in North Wales x x x x

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
