A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to give everyone some encouragement, since many of you are new on your journey. Today is my 6 month Bandiversary - I am officially down 102lbs. I had my own private goal to make 100lbs by 6 months, but I couldn't believe it when I got so close earlier this week. Then I got to do a happy dance this morning! I treated myself to a real pair of jeans and belt today. I still have more to lose than a lot of people do when they start, but I am certainly happy with my journey so far.

Keep up the good work - it is worth it!

Thanks everyone - it feels pretty good. I am proud, but it just proves all I had to do was eat less. I couldn't have done it without my band though. Best decision I ever made. I have been so lucky with it also. I have not had a fill since Sept and am tighter now than I have been - stress of a new job and moving probably, but it is working. Keep at it and do NOT wait on your fills, the restriction is really key.

Tann - WOW you are almost there - :whoo: - I wanted one that bows, but I couldn't find it - You ROCK!

I posted my pics on the June thread if you are interested.

When i started my band journey on 9/13/06 i was put into the god awful category of SUPER MORBIDLY OBESE. As time progresses ive now made it to simply obese. I was just curious if anyone out there that was super morbidly obese has ever gotten to the point where their weight is considered in a normal range.

i dont know what constitutes SUPER MO (im sure i was there), but if you search for JulieNYC, she has lost 200 pounds so far and looks fantastic!! there are quite a few successful bandsters on this board.

Well, when I started my banding journey I was 358 lbs, at 5'5" with a bmi of 59.6, which definitely put me in the super morbidly obese category. I am 1.5 years post surgery. My current weight in 158 with a bmi of 26.3. I need to lose 8.1 lbs to be at a regular bmi. So... I am really planning on getting there. It is possible. I started running a year ago and it has made all the difference. I ran a half marathon last month and am training for a 30 km run in the spring.

This is going to be such a great Christmas. What did I ask for? CLOTHES. I am hoping for a designer wrap dress!!!! Why? Because I can!!!!

Dawn, it is so encouraging to know someone who has achieved the level of loss I need to do has done it. Thanks for posting. I'm 5' 5" and I'd love to be able to run any distance right now...just too painful on the knees and would get short of breath quickly if I tried too. So, save a space for me in the future on the starting line of a 5K or whatever!

Consider a space saved!!! I could never run when I was heavier... I needed to lose a little first, but know it is an obsession.

We can do it!!!!!!

Good luck and the goal will be yours!!!

I was just banded on Dec 13, 2007 - 7 days ago and I am already feeling like I am overeating in the full liquid stage. Today I have eaten 2 pudding cups, 1 can of cream of chicken Soup, 1 cup of mashed potatoes, 2 Protein Shakes, and some juice. Even though that is not NEAR what I ate before the band, I think it is tooo much for being so fresh out of surgery.

Can anyone give me some insight as to how much you ate 1 week after surgery?

missmonaaz - I honestly drank liquids whenever I was hungry during the first week, I did try to watch the carbs though. You will hear time and again - now is not the time for losing weight, it is the time for healing. It is very true - drink liquids if you are hungry so you don't move too fast and damage your band.

I only had broth, sugar-free Gelatin and Protein Drinks during the first week after surgery. But I really didn't feel like eating anything else, everybody is different. You have to remember that you are probably completely infilled and only have the band in right now. Once you heal then the fills will start and you will have restriction. At the moment, if you did not have the swelling from the surgery, you would be almost as open as before.

No, it's not odd to be able to eat as much as you are saying. Just be careful and try not to overdue it. It's hard so don't beat yourself up if you slip. As soon as you heal you need to get in and get those fills until you feel like you have the restrcition you are going to need to be successful with your weight loss.

MissM,

to be honest, i didnt really pay attention to what i ate right after surgery in regards to volume. i just made sure i got Protein in.

i would sip an Isopure Protein Drink (40 grams of protein) all day. i know i LOVED Jello. during the night that first week or so, i would wake up in the middle of the night STARVING!! i had lime jello next to my bed and would literally have 1-2 bites and that completely satisfied me.

i did eat some jello pudding and a little broth, but to be honest, it took about 3 weeks for me to have an appetite.

my suggestion would be to cut the carbs to a minimum. carbs burn quickly and make you hungrier. try Isopure drinks (taste almost like kool ade). most GNC / Vitamin Shoppes carry them.

congrats on being banded!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed. I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
