What Made You Decide To Choose The Lap Band Over Other Weight Loss Surgeries?

Recommended Posts

Thank you!! It all feels very surreal - like I can't believe this is actually working! Then I remember, it's not really a "diet" or "program", it was my lifestyle change, and it's permanent!

Thanks everyone for the responses

Just wondering' date=' when you googled "lap band" and saw all the horror stories, were you at all deterred? This morning I started to freak out when I read a story of someone who got the band and gained everything back after one year. Then she said that the real statistics show that long term lap band success is only hovering at around ~10%

:o :o :o

OMG![/quote']

Every WLS surgery has this story. Its unfortunate but that is the risk. And more people go online to complain than to Celebrate.most successful folks are out there living there new skinny banded lives.Do ur research snd do what's best for u .

Here is a chart comparing band sleeve and bypass.thus may be helpful.good lucknon whatever u decide.

I spent years running around trying to get approved for WLS (15-21). In those six years, I got exactly nowhere because the behaviorist had a problem with my parents and refused to allow me to go ahead, but I was determined. After he sent me the third rejection letter, reason being because he didn't believe I had the right support system, I gave up. It wasn't until my dad had found this article in a local newspaper about two women having amazing results after getting lap band, about 5 months ago, that I considered going down this route. I am now a week post-op and I could not be more prouder of my decision. No matter what way I wanted to go with the surgery, I had massive amounts of support from friends & family.

I am so thankful that I went this way. As others have listed, I am sure I would of regretted ruining my stomach in the future if I did get approved for the other surgeries.

I chose the lap-band because it is less invasive than the sleeve (my other consideration) and because I felt like I would be better able to stop the loss-process when I wanted to better than with the sleeve. My bmi is only 32,so the band seemed like the better choice esp. for me. I don't like the idea of having 80% of my stomache gone forever...But I think the sleeve is an awesome tool for anyone needing wt. loss surgery with a little higher bmi than me.

I had the band and the sleeve done at the same time and he didn't remove any of my stomach...he folded the edges around underneath and sewed it up...I've lost 23.5 pounds and I haven't had any trouble! Love it! I was just banded on the 24th and have nothing but good things to say about both!

Well I was all set on the LapBand and then I met with my nutrionist who started to sway me towards the gastric, because I will lose more, and lose it faster. So I met with the other surgeon and I told them I wanted to ponder my decision and so I went to work and talked to three people who had had gastric bypass (2) and one person who had the lapband.

One of the two people who had the gastric looked sickly and emactiated and the other one was ok. However, she told me she did not "mean to" lose all that weight but she did, the bottom line is that you can't control the weight loss. How much or how fast, and with lap band you can control both so I decided to go that way.

I have 200 lbs to lose and that seems to be a challenge on the lapband, but I know it's possible,

So that's why I chose to have it...August 16th is my surgery date.

I agree -- it was a tough decision. I did LB for the same reasons you did but a few more as well. Research shows that if a person is more than 100 lbs -- they will probably be more successful with bypass (but there are certainly a lot of people who were over 100lbs and did fine). I was about that. If I was much more than that -- I do believe I would have done the bypass. Research also shows that people who tend to eat junk food when they are hungry do much better on bypass whereas people who tend to want to eat a real meal when they are hungry are good candidates for LB. I like junk food too but when I'm hungry I want real food --- not junk. Now -- when I look back on it --- I think I was overly afraid of the idea of bypass. I'm glad I did LB but if someone over 100 lbs cared to ask for my opinion -- I would tell them not to be afraid of the bypass.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
