Preop Diet. No Weight Loss.

Recommended Posts

I was just talkig to my mom about this same problem. I have been on the pre op diet for 7 days and have lost 5 lbs. Those 5 lbs just happen to be the same 5 that i gained after my last weigh in at the dr. I am afraid they are going to think that I have not been doing what I am supposed to. I am allowed 4 Protein Shakes a day and a 3 oz piece of meat and 2 cups of raw veggies. I have been having 1 to 2 shakes a day and my meal. I am dont know if they are looking for me to lose weight or to shrink my liver, how they will know if it shrinks it totally beyond me since they have never seen it before but who knows. I was going to call my dr office tomorrow and talk to them about it but they are closed so I decided to get on here and see what everyone else had to say.

I talked to the nurse before surgery. She said it was mostly for people with a blind over 40. She has not seen anyone turned away because of their liver. Good luck

Once you have been approved for surgery, it should not matter if you lose weight or not. They are not going to turn you away. I was told that the purpose of the pre op diet it to shrink the liver and reduce the amount of fat in the liver. The liver can get huge depending on what you have consumed (alot of fatty foods), The smaller it is, the easier it is to get to your stomach. They don't need to see your liver per say, but they know what size the liver should be based on what you eat. Every doctor is different. I don't have to do a liquid diet at all. We do 1000 calories for 2 weeks prior to surgery, which for me is no big deal. i consume 1330 calories now. I use a program that calculates the calories for me and I eat at least 85 grams of protien a day. That is based on my weight. I have lost 27 pounds since Feb and I am scheduled for surgery in May. Nothing after midnight the day before surgery. You may lose weight on a liquid diet, but it will most likley be gained back as soon as you eat solid food again. If you are not counting calories, it is hard to determine what you are taking in. I know some people hate it, but I do it. It helps me stay accountable. I now right after surgery I may not consume that because of the healing, therefore I was told not to really focus on losing weight right after surgery. Once I get back to solid food, your body is going to regulate itself instead of thinking you are starving it. Your body can go into starvation mode if it is not getting enough. Everyone is different on how many calories you can consume to lose weight, but I know what works for me. I also know I will not lose a lot of weight during the healing phase becasue my exercise will be limited. I think the key is to learn your body and really do what works for you. It is hard not to focus on weight loss initially, but that is what my entire team is telling me becasue your body has gone through changes. I wont be weighing in until 8 weeks after my surgery. Wont be hard for me becasue I don't want to get discourgaed becasue my body needs time to heal and regulate.

I was on muscle milk three times a day per my dr and worked out on the treadmill and walked outside up until yesterday my surgery date and lost weight try that also the working out part if not doing so already.

The purpose of this liquid diet is to help with shrinking your liver so that your dr can get in there if the liver is to enlarge they won't be able to do the surgery. Best of luck to you with this.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
