Help Please With Interpretations Of Lab Results

Can anyone please help interpret these results? A Nurse or Dr. maybe. It sounds so serious. I see the Dr. on Wens.

ON 3/12 I had a Fluoroscopy upper GI with air contrast with KUB

Findings: There is elevation of the right hemidiaphragm, as seen on prior chest radiograph 12-9-2011.

Double-contrast upper Gl examination was performed. There is a lap-band noted. The gastric band is noted at the gastroesophageal junction and projects below the left hemidiaphragm. There is severe gastroesophageal reflux identified. There is no gastric pouch identified. There is no abnormal contrast extravasation. ln the upper thoracic esophagus, there is a small smooth focal filling defect versus extrinsic impression on the posterior wall of the esophagus on the right anterior oblique views. This persists on multiple images. Visualized portions of the stomach, pylorus and duodenal bulb appear unremarkable. There is abnormal course suggested of the promial duodenum. The third portion of the duodenum is not seen coursing superiorly as would be expected. These findings are suspicious for bowel malrotation. There is no abnormal bowel dilation identified. There is expected esophageal peristalsis. There is no obstruction to flow of barium at the gastroesophageal junction.

IMPRESSION:

1. Status post gastric lap-band2. Small submucosal lesion versus extrinsic impression in the upper thoracic esophagus. Consider correclation with endoscopy.

3. Findings suggestion bowel malrotation. This can be correlated with CT examination of the abdomen and pelvis.

4. Severe gastroesophageal reflux.

I'm not a nurse or Dr but I would say relax - if it was serious then you wouldn't be waiting to see the Dr until Wed.

The fact they have found reflux is clear.

They can't see the pouch so maybe you have a slip. But remember a slip is not the end of the world, quite often they can be fixed. It says there is no obstruction to the flow of barium so that is good, at least everything is going through properly.The expected peristalsis means that the food is being pushed through the way it should be.

It is not a good idea for Drs to give copies of reports to their patients as what happens is what is happening to you now. You read all this complicated sounding stuff in medical speak and you panic thinking there is something awful wrong. There is a lot to be said for the old fashioned way of doing things where reports were sent from Dr to Dr. Yes we may be entitled to them but it is probably better to only get the copy once we have seen the Dr and everything has been explained to us.

Dr Google and his friends can be dangerous and can cause a person to worry more than they need to.

Now relax and stop worrying until you have seen the Dr. Hope everything is fine, let us know.

In fact thinking about this again the fact they can't see a gastric pouch probably means that you don't have a slip.

Which just proves that trying to interpret stuff that you know (me too ) nothing about is dangerous.

Actually, not having an appointment until Wednesday doesn't really mean anything these days. Sometimes doctor's just don't address these issues immediately as long as you are breathing ok, heart is beating, etc. And I am a nurse plus have personal experience.

Maddy1 - any thoughts you might want to give me on the results? I can certainly understand any hesitation on your part to do so, but....ya know I'm sure wondering.

Its been a long time since reading these types of reports but I'll give it a try. but it really doesn't look that bad. He is just noting a couple of lesions that are present on several frams...(meaning that it wasn't just a freak occurance and is actually there) most likely caused by the sever reflux. He notes that the first part of the intestines is normal. that the duodenum takes a slightly different path...(but thats probably fine....just different than the average person) and doesn't follow the same path as it would be exspected.......(if you haven't had huge problems in the past with your bowels, then it probably isn't an issue.....if you have then this twisting could be the cause.....but again A LOT of people could have this and don't even know it and would never be an issue. Then he concludes that even though a "twisting" is seen, the bowel appears to be open and the barium is flowing normally.

He feels if necessary, the lesions could be viewed with endoscopy.

The bowel malrotation can be viewed with a ct scan of the pelvis and abdomen.

so in other words.......don't worry Nothing is jumping out that you have something terribly wrong. or an emergency.

Only as an LPN - i would question the part where it states " no gastric pouch is seen" and the bowel malroation - not sure what that is but it would definitley question.

you have a lap band, with no pouch?

Waiting patiently - you made me feel sooooooo much better. I thought my "bowels in an uproar" (he he) meant terrible things.

Healthygal - I was also wondering about no pouch. Very odd.

See, this is my 2nd band and it is working and I'm very concerned that it continues to work. I may not have a pouch, but something is working.

The only issues I had was before my first fill. I still pb when I do something stupid like today when I was mad, thought I had another screw up surgery and ate some chips.

I don't have reflux at all. No bowel issues. That is why this report caught me so off guard. I'll let ya know what the Dr. says on Wens.

The only thing my Dr. was concerned about was that I have a mass on my esphogus. He couldn't tell if it was on the inside of my esphogus or outside. I made and appt. with my primary so he could order an endoscopy.

They aren't worried about my bowels. and they could see my pouch, but said it was very small. Another surgeon did my surgery, but has left.

So, I think you were right. Dr. Google did create some undue stress!!

Hey I didn't do too bad interpretting ..............to have been out of the field for a long time!! I'm glad everything looked well.
