December Bandsters!! How Ya Feeling??

Recommended Posts

I called and asked the nurse about lower BMI patients needing more of a fill. She told me it varies for everyone but lower BMI patients have less fatty tissue around the stomach. More fatty tissue = less restriction because the stomach tissue is thicker. After hearing her explanation kinda makes sense.

Forgot to mention she also told me that as we lose we will require more fill for the same reason.

That makes sense, Violablue - and I'm going to try to work with this another week. It's just so frustrating that I feel no restriction at all after having it for a month.

I am going in today to have my port fixed and my first fill, I'm excited and nervous. I know that he is going to start my first fill with 3-4 cc and go from there. I'm hoping that is enough to feel some restriction. I'm nervous about getting cut open, yet again. I just hope that it doesnt hurt too bad since I am having it done at 4pm today and still have to be back at work tomorrow. (and tomorrow I have a day packed full of meetings so I will be sitting most of the day ugh) I wish I knew how or why my port flipped, but there is really no explanation. My Doctor did tell me this was a new port he was using and he is not happy with it as he has had 2 flip totally over and 3 flip sideways...I dont know if he is going to totally replace the port or just flip it back over and stitch it down. I dont care, either way other than I want it to be done and I want to be on the road once again to losing. One thing I have learned about myself though, I need to be more patient and take the speed bumps slow and steady....because going as fast as I can over them is not always an option :)

I was banded on December 28th. I had a problem with heartburn so I had to go back on Nexium. I was not happy about that but it made such a big difference. The doctor and nurses insisted it was the way I was eating but as soon as I started back on the Nexium I was able to eat and drink without discomfort.. I eat about 4 to 5 ounces of food at each meal and then I stop. i am never really hungry and I am never really full. At the end of the day, it is all about about the eating choices we make. It is still a diet but you just can't eat as much as before. I have lost 29 pounds pre-op and 33 pounds post-op for a total of 62 pounds. Good luck to all of the lap banders both pre and post surgery. It is nice to stay in touch on this website.

Hey December Bandsters! How ya doing? This has definitely been an adventure. I am attempting to change my eating habits. With 3.5 cc in my band - I do have restrictions; but not a lot. My next fill is scheduled for March 8, 2012. I have not decided if I am going to get a fill or not. I have lost 25 pounds since I began his journey almost 3 months ago. I am at a good size now even though I am not at goal. I don't want to loose too fast because I don't want a lot of loose skin. I have definitely had my downs with exercising and eatting right but not loosing weight and I have had my ups with weight just falling off when I was not eating as good as I should have been. This is definitely a process. If nothing else, the band has taught me to make a conscious decision about what I am putting in my mouth before I do it. Myfitnesspal has been an awesome tool. Would love to read how ya'll have been doing.

I was banded on the 8th of December and I have not had a fill yet. I am waiting the 90 days so that insurance will pay. Yes, I am that cheap! I have definitely noticed a difference this month. I can eat anything but white meat chicken. To dry, get stuck to easy, even when it is cut up to miniscule pieces. I don't even know if I have lost any weight since my last Dr visit, I threw my scale away. I was getting obsessive. I got really down on myself, but then my husband reminded me that I have lost 28 pounds in 2 months. Duh, I am doing great and I don't need to be validated by some stupid inanimate object 2 to 3 times a day. Ü

WOW, My doctor has ALL visits post op, including fills, included in the price of the surgery for the first 90 days. He should have been able to do your fills for free during that time. Good luck!!!

I have all of my visits and fills for a year - I had my surgery on 12/30 and have had 2 fills already (one yesterday). Just a hint - taking an icepack with you and putting it over your port for a few minutes helps a LOT!!!!

Two months today from my banding, still no fills. Was told I have 3cc from the date of surgery. Have lost 20lbs total-10 the first week and the other 10 for the last 7 or so weeks. I can say its been through motivation & a awareness that I need to eat less & make good choices in everything that I eat. I have weighed myself almost daily, which I'm sure is not the best thing to do but it keeps me on track. I have literally loss & gained 3 lbs for the entire month of February. I don't see the dr. till the end of March, so I'm hoping that the extra exercise will make a difference. 600-1000 calories a day is kind of scary to know that's what I'll need to stay at to lose or maintain. I exercise almost everyday and have a fitbit to monitor my steps per day too. The only difference between pre surgery & today is that I have to eat slower & not swallow too large a bite or it will get stuck.

Looking forward to March & what it may bring. Good luck December bandsters & carry on!

Keep it up, Blondie! I'm using my FitBit too and I love it! According to my PA, 1-2 lbs is normal and what they want you to lose. If you lose it too quickly, your skin will get all saggy.

My first fill, she took out too much, so I spent all of January gaining and losing the same lb. Got another fill Tuesday, but its hard to tell, because I'm still on liquids.< /p>

You're doing great and March will be good for all of us!

Thank you! I think we just stay the course & little by little it will come off. By now I probably would have put on some if not for the surgery-so thanks for the lift! :)

I get 3 months included in the surgery. After that I just pay my yearly deductible. Still $300 a year is a small price to pay. I know I spent more than that on food and other diets in the past and I never got the results.

I was banded on 12/20/11, I went to surgery at 255, I was 243 at my first post op visit in January. I was 243 at my February visit and got my first fill at 4cc's and I just weighed myself and I'm still 243. My restrictions are gradual, I go for my next fill on Thursday 3/8/12. I know I need one because I eat more than I should. My only issues are bread and red meat. I hope this fill will restrict me a little more. I know a lot of people lose their appetite after the surgery but I didn't. After healing I ate the same as before the surgery. I ate a little less than that after my first fill but I still have a great appetite. So I guess after a few more fills my intake of food will decrease and I'm cool with that. I didn't get fat overnight and I'm not going to lose overnight. I have lost more inches than weight and that's a great thing. God bless you all.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
