Annoyed With Predicted Total Weight Loss By Lap Band Surgeon

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been upset with your surgeon's presurgery predicted weight loss? I had my psych screening today and am very annoyed with my surgeon's predicted total weight loss for me. I'm at 204, and I want to achieve my own goal weight of 128, which I weighed in my 20's (I'm 66 now). The psychologist informed me that my surgeon has predicted my weight loss to be only 40 pounds, to 174. I think that's ridiculous, and I argued vehemently with her that he doesn't know me, she doesn't know me, and there was no way I was going to go through the surgery and settle for being what I consider to be still fat. At 174 I'd be a size 18, only 2 sizes down. Hell, I can get down there myself without surgery - I'd gotten down to that 6 years ago, until I met my guy and started eating the way he does. (We are doing the surgery together.) Ok, my metabolism is slower than what it was in my 20's, but there are loads of women in their 60's who are at their ideal weight. Bottom line: I'm angry, determined to lose a LOT more than they expect, yet now apprehensive that they may be right. Not if I have anything to say about it!! I think they're dead wrong. Who's beat the prediction? Is my surgeon being more conservative in his predictions than most?

Well my surgeon never made a "prediction" ( utterly ridiculous if you ask me) but i was told the most people dont lose 100 % of their xcess weight. The nutritionist didnt think i had much chance of getting to my goal of 70 kg. I not only blew that out of the Water but have settled at 65 kg which is over 120% of my excess weight. Ive spoken at info nights for my surgeon who has to say to the crowd that my results are not typical. But I didnt do anything magic, i worked my and but i dont follow a plan i eat what i want, and i exercise.

I got the predicted 75% off within a year but the rest took about three years.

Use it as motivation to prove them wrong! I've lost 51kg in eight months and have exceeded my surgeon's expectations - which he didn't reveal post surgery. You can either let it limit your success or drive your success. The choice is yours so go for it!

Wonderful! I know I'm not "most people," and obviously neither are you. I don't believe in lowering people's expectations of what they can do. Interestingly, these people are VERY worried about suicide among those who discover their lives haven't magically changed with the weight loss. Blah, blah, I know all that. Waste of two hours, except for the psychologist. She made some money.

yes!!! My surgeon at the military hospital said I would be lucky to lose 40 pound, but he signed of on it stating "40 lbs is better than nothing, it would still improve your health". I wanted to smack him!! He tried so hard to talk me into doing the bypass, and I was like NO WAY! so he sourced me out to Dr Lavin, and his nurse practioner said similar, I will never lose 140 pounds with out the bypass. well tough, I am using it as motivation and had my bypass on 12/07 I have lost 23 pounds to date and I went for my first post op visit yesterday. The nurse said I was doing good, that most lap band patients gain after the surgery.. I dont know what planet these people are on! Look over the lapband talk forum, there was one person who had her surgery in March and has lost 112 lbs. I want to be like that person! Hope you do well, keep your chin up! and we can do this!!

Check your math. 204 minus 40 pounds is 164, not 174. However: My surgeon's team said I should expect to only lose about about 50 pounds. I said Ok, but then proceeded to lose 125. In less than a year. And now those same team members are amazed at how great I look. They want me to come speak to potential new paitents, so they can get excited about having this surgery. I told them we'll see where I am in another year, after I've had plastic surgery to get rid of the excess skin that resulted from my weight loss.

Don't let an arbitrary decision by a psychologist deter you. Their job is to decide whether you're a candidate for surgery. What you do AFTER surgery is completely up to you. If you want to see 128 again, it's entirely possible, if you work hard enough.

Good luck!

Dave

My surgeon did not predict a specific amount for my weight loss specifically, but made a statement at his seminar that band patients only lose about 40-60% of their excess weight. Of course that is a statistic. I'm not going to let myself be a statistic. For me, that percentage is out of my brain because i have seen first hand how much people can lose. And just think, we here at the forums do NOT represent the majority of lap band patients. WE are proactive. WE are the ones here asking questions, wanting to do the most we can to succeed. Sadly, my Dr informed me, most patients get the surgery and never come back to the office. The day ofthe seminar, we were told that 90% of us wouldn't follow through with the necessary steps to get to the surgery date. Well here I am. Got my surgery date yesterday. Going in January 30 and I'm going to change my life. For most of us, this is it. The last straw, our last hope! I believe we will all lose more than the statistic, there is no TRy. Just DO.

Screw Him!

Once you get into that Green "Zone", you just keep on keeping on. It becomes a lifestyle.

Whats he gonna do? Give you a un-fill when you reach his weight goal? At that point you go in and tell him "I feel fine. Let me be right where I'm at. I'm happy and satisfied"

One thing i have noticed though is how uncomfortable people get when you start dipping below. Bmi of 25. I mean 20 is healthy right? So why do all mu current doctors (lapband doc, colorectal surgeon, oncologist and gp) grill me in a very unsubte attempt to uncover my eating disorder? Why do they now think that th exercise that was applauded on the way down is now excessive?

Weve all been told time and time again that fr weight loss to be successful, you need to make permanent changes, yet now people are saying " enough, you can ease off now". Theres something very complex in ourvway of thinking that makes us very uncomfortable with large weight loss.

Same motivator for me! I was told I would only lose about 50 pounds! Ha, I'm already down 67 pounds! I have smashed his goal for me. I used my anger at him as motivation to prove him wrong. AT my last fill he told me he was proud of me and gave me a hug! He said I was in the top 40% of bandsters who lose successfully. I don't consider still being morbidly obese as successful though, and I am no where near done. I plan to be at 100 pounds lost by April. I have also been asked to speak on a panel at the hospital. And because of a fellow bandster and myself, the clinic is starting to increase there support for us, because it is nill.

Transform yourself! Prove your surgeon wrong, because he is and they need to learn that the band does work!

hey you guys, how many people on this site get so angry when they don't lose what they "thought" they were "supposed" to lose.

all my info -from my insurance co. & doc(University of Minnesota) says 40 to 60%. I welcome the comments from my doc. we are trying to get healthy not ultra skinny. do we really want to create another problem?

live each day with all the gusto that thin(not ultra skinny) people live. eat to live not live to eat. this is not a race.

it scares me when people get so worked up. isn't our health the main concern? are we doing this to "show them" or start to love ourselves for who WE are?

was he testing you, perhaps? I think it's ridiculous that any doctor predicts the future. YOU are the only one in control...if you want to hit a certain goal, HIT it. The band is only a tool to help you get to that goal...no one can predict what you will do but you. :-) Go, girl!

Maybe so, but it is these same pinheads who preach we should have a Normal BMI and Body fat Index. I want to love myself and return to who I used to be, not what I've become.

I actually had my doctor back out of surgery at the last minute, after he had already scheduled it and my mom bought her plane ticket to come take care of me. He told me he did not believe I would be successful. I was so angry and upset, but I didn't let that stop me. I found another surgeon that was able to keep my surgery at the originally scheduled day and I'm about 2 months post op and have lost about 45 lbs. my new doc is super impressed by how quickly I'm losing. I trUly believe that my previous surgeon helped me lose so fast. I've set out to prove him wrong. Use it as motivation to prove them wrong!

Yup when I made my goals with my doc I said I would love to be 250. He said I didn't need to be unrealistic and to shoot for 275. Now I am closing in on 175... Needless to say he has me speaking at most of his seminars now lol.

Never be a sheep, you know your body. Use this as the tool it is, not as the crutch you expect.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
