Dr. Hadar Spivak, Houston

Recommended Posts

Hey, is there anybody still around that was banded by Dr. Hadar Spivak in Houston. I was banded by him in May '06. In early '10, I decided to find a fill doc closer to home as I live in central Arkansas. I told myself if I ever had any concerns I would follow up with Dr. Spivak (he was good with this decision.) Well I'm concerned I may have some slippage. The fill doc I'm using doesn't do fluoroscopy, so it's been a couple years, I think it's time. I called Dr. Spivak's office and he has gone back to Israel and gave his patients to a couple other docs. Just wondering if anybody has any info on the what's, why's and when? Just being nosey I guess, but he was a wonderful surgeon and doc. Thanks for anybody's input! (Oh, needless to say, I guess I'll try to convince my doc here I really need an x-ray!)

I stopped seeing Dr. Spivak in 2010 because for no reason he would no longer fill me (surgery 8/06) so I turned to Dr. Pears all at Longevity Centers on Richmond. I don't know why he returned to Israel since he had such a lucrative practice.

Returned to take care of his elderly parents and take position as Head of WLS at hospital there. I loved him!! Why would he not give you a fill?

He said it wasn't worth it because I would only lose 5 pounds or so. I replied that it would get the ball rolling. So I asked, am I done here? and he said yes, which so surprised me because we had a wonderful relationship. I went to a fill center, got a fill and lost ten pounds.

Wow he never was like that to me and he did all my fills himself. Hey 5 lbs is 5 lbs! I am so surprized that should not have happened! But you are still doing good since 2006?

I had lost 75 pounds from 06 to 08 and was 8 pounds from goal in late 08. The first 50 came off easily, the next 25 came off with strenuous exercise. I then had bronchitis in late 08 and required a cortisone shot which caused me to gain 10 pounds. I then began to develop hypothyroidism, and had another cortisone shot in late 2009 due to a knee problem which caused me to gain more weight. My thyroid worsened in 2010 which caused me to gain 5 pounds, and made it difficult to lose weight. I got a fill last summer and lost ten pounds but still have 30 to go. I am still glad I got the band because despite the shots and thyroid my weight is constant. Preband I could gain 5 pounds in a week and be out of a clothing size in less than a month.

Thanks for the info Cheri. I loved the man! Still not sure about the doc I'm with here in Arkansas. But I'm losing again because I'm being very cautious about my intake, ha, which is what it's all about, huh!

I was banded by dr. Spivak on June 1, 2005. It was the best decision u have ever made. I weighed 276 lbs the day of surgery. I am proud to say that 9 years post op I have maintained my 100lbs weight loss. I am sad because dr Spivak is gone. I do worry about who would treat me should I ever have complications but the docs that are at his office in Houston are very nice as far as I've been told. I have never had any complications thanks you Jesus. Last year, 8 yrs post op I had breast masteopexy with augmentation and brachioplasty on my arms. This was performed by dr Daniel casso who is excellent. 4 days ago, 9 yrs post op I had a. Circumferential body lift with liposuction also done by dr casso. I am still very stiff and sore but already love my results. I have been over weight all my life and felt as though I lived in the shadows of my sister who wore a size 0. This weight loss procedure gave me my life back. For the first time in my life I went on family vacation with my kids and grand kids to a Water park and wore a swimsuit and was not self conscious. I would recommend this to anyone who has had trouble losing weight. I've been. Wry fortunate to have a very supportive husband and kids who have all stood by my side with these decisions. This is the best gift I could have ever been given. A chance to really enjoy live without feeling ashamed. My husband has now decided that after the first of the year he wants to have the lap band procedure.

Hi, I was banded by him March '07 and lost 120 lbs. I also love the guy and his staff. I wish he was still here. He recommended dr Scarborough. I've gone to him once just for annual check up to make sure everything is ok. He's fine. But there's nothing like your original surgeon (in my opinion). I heard he went to head up the bariatric surgery in a hospital in Israel as well. I hope he comes back.....

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
