Eating like it's going out of style

Recommended Posts

My surgery will not be until September but I feel like I've been eating things that I normally wouldn't eat because I know they will be limited soon. I know I'm not the only one who is going through this or went through this prior to surgery. I've made a definite attempt lately to knock it off, but I surely caught myself doing it.

I did that too. Just try to control it as much as you can, so that the post-op diet won't be a total shock to your system.

Yep... I did it too and ended up  gaining. UGH. That SUCKED big time. Do yourself a favor, if you are aware of it make yourself stop. I was so disappointed in myself for the gain.

I did it too. I was lucky that when I got my surgery date, I only had about 3 1/2 weeks. I ate like a pig for the first 10 days and got it out of my system. I dieted my a$$ of for 2 weeks and managed to lose 15 pounds.

Good luck in your Quest to control the pre-op eating.

I failed miserably at this. I actually lost 30 lbs and gained 35lbs all in the 8 months before I was banded. I guess I know why I needed this thing!

Fortunately, struggling with pre-op eating is no indicator of your future success with the band.

I know and realistically I haven't gained weight. I just noticed that I was eating more than usual and things I would never think to eat?

I have my date Aug 11th and I haven't given myself the "go ahead" yet because i'm terrified to gain more. I've gained 10lbs since I started working nights back in Jan and that has been brutal for me to deal with. I mean i've been overweight forever but I was stuck at a certain weight for over 2 years and then all of a sudden, with zero effort, bam 10lbs. My liquid diet starts on the 28, so i'm making sure I stay "good" until at least the 26th! Then i'll give myself permission to splurge until the 28th when I have to start liquids. I'm terrified of it!

Omg me too! I have been splurging and I gained 4lbs this month :( I have my 4th visit tomorrow for my preop and hoping this isn't a negative for approval. Need to get myself in gear!

I've done it too. I'm trying to make sure I eat all my favorite things that I may not be able to eat again. LOL.

I have been doing the exact same thing!!! I try really hard and I am good for a few days and then I mess up and keep messing up! You would think that I will never be able to eat again at this rate :( I have all thee foods and restaurants I want to go to before my surgery Sept. 29. Thats such not a good and healthy way of thinking. I really know better, so what the heck is my problem?

I honestly think its because we have a real bond with food and we feel like we're going to miss it. I'm like any other addict. If I wasn't I wouldn't being taking a life altering step like the LapBand.

I had a last Mexican dinner, steak dinner, several margarita's, fish and chips, pizza anything I could think of that I was no longer going to be able to eat for a while. I am glad I did it, because I needed to do it. Maybe like a closure like a break up or death. I am almost a month after being banded, and I really don't miss those foods at all, in fact I went into a gas station this afternoon and they sold fried foods and I instantly got nauseated. It is almost like I got brain surgery, I don't crave most foods and for once in my life even PMSing I did not get overly hungry, or crave anything. I feel if you need to indulge before the surgery, you should. If you don't need that closure for your relationship with food then don't waste your time.

Good Luck!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
