Got scolded by np for protein shakes in the am

Recommended Posts

So I went for my second fill today (i will be 10 weeks on thursday) 8and I was talking to the nurse practioner that was doing my fills and she scolded me for drinking Protein shakes in the morning.

According to my doctors plan, I am suppose to be totally off Protein Shakes except for after fills. I like having my shake in the morning. Its quick and easy and I stay full until at least noon. So whats the big deal? If it wasnt keeping me full that would be another story, right?

By the way, I got .30 in my band today, so im at little over 6cc now. She wanted to give me 1, but I didnt think I needed it. Just needed a little tweek.

They want your diet to be as normal as possible, that means food 3x a day. We are learning to eat properly. Ultimately you aren't supposed to drink your calories. But yea, really I don't see a problem if it works for you.

Heather is right, they want the diet as normal as possible. Really, they want to make sure you aren't stressing about doing this or that properly. I myself have a Protein Shake in the morning before work and after my workout. You can have them whenever.

That's quite different than my experience.

My fill nurse and I discuss my diet every time we meet. I tell him I drink a Protein shake every workday morning on my way to work. He says that's a great way to kickstart my metabolism, gets my Protein started for the day, and gives my system something to work on other than my muscles first thing in the morning.

About an hour later I eat a fried egg, sausage patty, and slice of cheese. (Think "Breakfast sandwich" without the bread.) It fills me up till lunch. No problems from my nurse, and he says I'm doing everything right. (I don't drink protein shakes other than that one. The rest of my diet is "real" food.) My weight loss would support what my nurse says.

Goes to show once again that there are many ways to live with a band. :)

I think that the bottom line here is that it is your body; and while the doctor's office has a "plan" ... we are not ALL alike. We have to listen to our bodies -- we're the only ones who can. LOL If a shake holds you until your next meal, then I'd say it is working for you. It may not work for another person. I have been drinking a Protein Shake every morning for well over a year. I am very dehydrated in the morning so getting food down before 10 a.m. is an issue. So I start my day (after my walk at 5:30 a.m.) with a Protein Shake and plenty of Water. I try to have a mid morning snack ... lately I have no appetite so the snack has been difficult, but I know I need the nutrients. Ultimately, no amount of scolding would change the fact that, for various reasons (including that I walk 3-4 miles every morning and lose even more hydration), I cannot eat in the morning.

You must do what is right for you. If your weight loss suffers ... do something different.

All the best to you on your journey.

I have a Protein Shake for Breakfast and I would split one before and after my workouts . I don't see a problem with having Protein Shakes. :0)

I agree with above, a protien shake seems to be working for you. When I had my band tighter and was loosing, I couldn't eat in the morning either. I did a protien shake for breakfast every morning for almost a year.

I have gone back to having a Protein Shake in the morning for a couple of reasons...because it's easy and to make sure I get my Protein in. I found that my protein levels were not where they should be and the shake helps. The PA at my surgeon's office is fine with it.

My surgeon said he wants me to have at least one Protein Shake a day.......forever. Go figure. All surgeons have a little different philosophy. I say as long as you're not drinking all your meals go for it. It seems a great way to insure you get enough Protein.< /p>

Thanks guys, I was thinking thw same way. I stick to 1200 calories and im getting my Protein in. So I think until its not working I will stick with it. Ive lost 10 lbs since my last visit. Actually the doctors office has me as losing 29.5 lbs total. So that was a bonus. :)

Thanks again for comments!

I agree with the comments above - we're all different. If it works for you then I dont see the problem. I mean, you can debate every aspect of eating until the cows come home, but like someone said above, Protein, carbs, whatever, its all way better than the Mcdonalds and crap we ate before.

I've continued with one Protein Shake a day (usually mid-afternoon) with no problems. Since I do the gym after work, I feel that is the best time for me to supplement my Protein intake. I will continue with that plan unless I am told otherwise.

My doc's office doesn't have a problem with it, in fact they encourage it somewhere throughout the day. I do mine in the morning because I am not terribly hungry after I work out.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
