avoid caffeine/ and carbonation

Recommended Posts

I was told I could have caffeine as soon as I was drinking ample fluids post op.

I was also told to never have carbonation because it can cause the pouch to stretch out and ruin the effects of the band.

yeah, same here. my dr said that the only reason they recommend no caffeine is because it stimulates hunger and because it's a diuretic and post surgery it's crucial to get a lot of liquids. but he said after a few weeks i could drink coffee if i made sure to get my Water in. but yeah, no carbonation (no beer!!! AHHHH!!!! or diet coke!!!)

Same here....no caffeine initially because it can irritate the stomach and you want the stomach to heal......

No carbonation after banding. This was tough for me as I was addicted to seltzer Water. I haven't had anything with carbonation since my banding 6 months ago and so far, it hasn't been an issue.

As far as beer.......the need to avoid carbonation has forced me to aquire a taste for vodka....

My dr. said caffeine was ok in moderation. He says no carbonation until after 3 months and then I can try it. He says some people can't tolerate it. As a former diet pepsi addict I figure it's just as well to not have it. I've not had any since February and it's not been that bad.

I can have caffeine but never carbonation. It is easy to follow that rule because I don't want to mess up my surgery. And pop was my addiction and I am so glad I got over it. Every once in a while I do miss it for a few seconds. I had to change from diet coke and vanilla vodkas to cranberry juice and vodka.

My surgeon didn't have a problem with caffeine as long as we don't have a problem with it. Caffeine can cause crashes for hypoglycemics and even diabetics so I avoid it and always have. He didn't have a problem with carbonation after 30 days (and said it's a myth that carbonated beverages will stretch the pouch) and only gave the warning that some of his banded patients find carbonated drinks painful. I don't and as someone who can't have grain, fruits or starches...the Faygo carbonated grapefruit Water was my treat.

Is it caffeine for 3 months or forever. Is it carbonation for as long as u r banded. Avoiding it is the question. Thanks

Obviously, there are lots of different answers for this according to the doctor. My doctor is OK with caffeine and carbonation as long as you are OK with it! He does recommends limiting sodas, alcohol, and other things with carbonation mainly because they're not usually the most healthy things to drink, but doesn't forbid them. I drink coffee just about every day, but don't drink sodas nearly as much as I used to--I often go weeks without as I don't have much of a taste for them anymore. If I do have one, I sip it--gulping can be a bit of a problem. Most of the alcoholic drinks I like don't have much or any carbonation, so that's not usually a problem.

I had my first real cup of coffee today. 6 ounces with cream. I am drinking extra to accomodate but had no ill effects from it. I think the dehydration is a risk in the beginning. I wasn't a big coffee drinker before surgery--one to two cups a day. I am not a pop drinker so the no carbonation rule is no big deal to me.

Well.. I was told caffeine stimulates appetite so it's good to stay away from it. But I don't see any physical reason you can't have it. Soda I would imagine would make you feel icky... and bloated. I already feel like I drank a lot of soda because of all the gas, I can imagine it would be terribly uncomfortable. I never drank coffee anyways.. it was always soda.

It does seem that different docs say different things...but the consensus between the docs in my town seem to be that caffeine and carbonation are OK at least 6 weeks post op (giving your body time to heal) and as tolerated....some people have a lot of trouble with carbonation (I can't drink it after food) and others don't have any. I have at least one caffeine free diet pop a day - that is my treat!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
