Could there be a correlation? I have been having VERY bad pain for the last 2 and half weeks. The pain moves around, and I am now convinced it is some kind of stone that is too big to pass. I went to my regular doctor and they said call my lap-band surgeon. Nice huh? I left a message but haven't heard back yet. I am going to go to the ER this weekend and insist they check for kidney stones. I have never had them before, but the pain is as bad as labor pains. Anyone have any experience with kidney stones?

I do! I had kidney stones after I did Atkins induction (the old induction guidelines) once for five weeks instead of properly. My urologist and general doctor said it was due to extreme modification of my diet. Kidney stones run in my family but I am the only one in my generation to have had them. Mine were tiny newly formed crystals so not nearly as bad as most people suffer from. I was in so much pain I couldn't speak!

Is it possible that you have modified your diet so much that

the kidney stones could be the result?

And before the pro-Atkins posters respond... I will take my two doctors opinion as to my medical condition and cause as correct and, as I stated, I overdid induction.

Yes, I'd say that I have. I just don't know what else it could be.

I got kidney stones about 2 months after my surgery. My urologist told me it was due to my increase of calcium supplements. So.....I stopped taking those and have been getting my calcium through my diet instead. I hope I never have to go through that again!!!

I've been reading up on it and I am 99.9% sure that is what is going on. I am going to go to the ER this afternoon when my husband gets home (from his fishing trip! *%$@!)

I took some leftover pain meds from surgery and the pain was GONE for a few hours. But it made me feel nauseous, and fuzzy. Not looking forward to whatever they are going to do to me at the hospital.

It took three shots of demerol to get rid of my pain. They will probably wait to see if you can pass them. They might do a CT scan - painless. They might do the procedure (called lithotripsy) where they blast them with sound waves to break them up. I hear that is painless too and non-invasive.

Does your back ache? Do you have to urinate but nothing comes out? If you can urinate, it may not be kidney stones and if you have no back pain it is probably not kidney stones. It was the most unbearable pain I have ever been in. There is no way that Vicodin or any standard pain reliever would have dulled that pain.

Having them in the first place is more pain than anything they will do to you in the ER to treat them.

It will be ok. Keep us posted though,...

They said that since there was no blood in my urine, that it isn't a kidney stone. They didn't do any other tests at all.

So on to week 3 of unexplained excruciating pain.

Have you talked to your lapband surgeon? I hope this gets resolved right away.

I'm going to call tomorrow. Could gas pains hurt this bad and last this long?

Also, the blasting procedure is often done at a different location. In my case, I had to wait until it was available...because my stone was so large and had completely shut down my kidney...they had to place a stent in to open things up until I could have the blasting procedure.

Kidney stones are horrid...I would rather give birth to octoplets than have a kidney stone...I get them often and the doctor keeps telling me about supplements...I told him...I cannot take a multi Vitamin because of the Calcium.. There is no way on gods green earth I am going through the kidney stone issue again.

Cranberry tablets are supposed to help a lot. They don't help get rid of existing stones but they help stop new ones from forming. I have a friend that takes it religiously and he has been stone free for two years!

Ouch! I think they're something you're prone to and can be aggravated by a number of causes, diet being only one of them, supplements another.

The theory is that strict high Protein low carb diets (ones that keep you in ketosis, not the sort bandsters ordinarily tend to do) can leach calcium from your bones and form calcium based stones OR can lead to the cholesterol based stones as well. So if your diet is moderate, it can certainly be lower carb and higher protein, just dont do something extreme like the Atkins induction unless you have real reason to and are under the care of a medical professional advising you to do it! You'd probably need to be susceptible anyway for it to be a risk for you but like supplements, why take the risk if you know you do have a tendency?

I had a kidney stone on Thanksgiving Day... 6 months after my Lap Band surgery. Had to go to emergency room. After following up with my family doc - He put me on a diuretic and a little more calcium.
