banded thurs, swollen shut

Recommended Posts

I am having some issues with the band. I was banded at 3:30 on thursday and still cant keep down so much as a sip of Water. They took me to xray yesterday and did a barium swallow and I am one of the unfortunate ones who responded to this with excessive swelling, I am just swollen completely shut. I cant keep a sip of anything down, everything just comes back up foamy bile. And the pain on my sternum/stoma is unreal. Other than that I have had no problem with gas or soreness from actual surgery. I would feel great if this damn swelling would go down. I cant even go home until I can get a glass of water down. Please send prayers, good vibes, etc.... my way!

Sorry to hear about that - It happened to me toooooo!

I was rehospitalized for 4 days with nothing by mouth. They ran IV fluids and gave me 4 days of steroids to get the swelling down. Good luck to you . Your in great company here on the board everyone of us has something or an experience in common.

Look on the bright side - if you can find it right now - you'll be down a significant amount of wieight the first week. LOL

But staying hydrated is cruicial. So if it's IV's don't fight it.

Healthy vibes to you.

Debby

Thank goodness your still in the hospital! At least there they can help you. If you'd gone home you'd end up in the ER where they have no clue about the band.

I'm sorry you're having a horrble time, but I'm happy your safe and well taken care of.

okay, the last round of shots, meds, and stuff in my i.v. must be working. or else a little combo of that and nature have taken their course. i have been able to sip on a some propel, and have managed to keep down about 4 oz with NOTHING coming back up. i think if i can get that much more down by noon i will get to home. thanks for the prayers and thoughts, it all kicked in and helped!!!!!!

Ahhhh, if you can keep down 4 ounces of Propel you are well on your way. i was very very swollen, too, but only swollen shut for a short time...took a nap and could then sip again. But, it's hard. And I swear the IV fluids I got were what put me on the mend. Good for you. Take it very slow and easy on your eating, be gentle to your newly banded tummy. Heal well!!!

Oh, I am glad you are getting better. I was banded Tuesday but they barely looked to see if anything was getting down before they were wanting to discharge me. I insisted on staying until I didn't feel like vomiting. They did keep me an extra day but I don't feel I was well taken care of. Most said that I was not heavy enough to have this kind of surgery - did I try losing weight on my own? Are they kidding? No, I just woke up one morning and said "Oh my gosh, I am fat, I think I will have drastic surgery!" I had the surgery in Libertyville, IL and I should have researched how much surgery the hospital had done. I am feeling much better now.

I am home!!!!! I am tired tired tired but I feel 100% better. If my stomach hadnt swollen like that I swear I would have been one ideal surgery patient. I had no gas pains, I have no pain anywhere, just barely sore. (except for that lingering tightness in my chest/stoma) I was up walking within 2 hours and just felt fine until that first ice chip. I am glad that part is over and that I am able to get liquids down now. I have to take it VERY slowly, but they are trickeling through now. I never thought chicken broth could taste so good!! Thanks for all the well wishes, this place is a godsend!

ps. i need to change my ticker. i was 224.8 on preop scales. they squeezed me in a day early and i never even got my "last meal" which i planned to have with several margaritas!!!! i guess that was for the best.

Glad you're feeling better Glitterqueen. I started out as about the same weight as you & our goals are similar. It cost a lot, but things worked out well for me to go to TJ and get the band w/o anyone questioning whether I was fat enough.

I've been happy with the speed of my weightloss--but have worked VERY hard at it. I hope the rest of your journey is smoother!

Glad to hear you are home and safe. Hopefully they figured out what to give you to keep the swelling down. Me, I got several shots of anti-inflamatory right into the rolls of my tummy. I was NOT happy each time the nurse gripped my fattest part like that and rammed in a needle, but in the end I'm grateful because whatever they gave me did the trick.

Welcome to bandland! We've been waiting for you!!! :)

WOW I'm sorry you had to go through so much. It was a blessing for this all to happen while still in the hospital. Glad you are home and doing well. Congratulations on your new way of life.

Hey Glitter! Glad you were able to finally get home and are feeling better. I was banded on the 27th too! Luckily, I didn't have the swelling you're talking about. They did a barium swallow before I could leave and all is well. No PBs, no nausea, the gas pains were gone by the 29th...

This liquid diet thing is a drag but I keep working through in my head.."...it's only for a little while, what's a month out of your life to change it completely?" That helps me get my head on straight when I see the family eating pizza.

Hope you continue to feel good!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
