  1. AMen to this. people seem to be afraid to touch their hair and want to put it back or tie it up, and those things are the worst things we could do. Massage your scalp, get blood flowing there, use good products, brush your hair regularly to stimulate your scalp. You just have to ride it out. For most of us, the loss will occur, and nothign you can do is going to stop it, because its already dead. You have to just get the hair out of your head so new stuff can grow in. And for most, the loss doesn't start until 3-4 months out i've seen. I got to 4 months and that is when it hit! I had so hoped I'd be spared. It is slowing down now a bit. And I have fuzzy new growth starting in. And like petal said, my hairdresser told me to use nioxin, so that is what I am using.
  2. I am losermama73! Add me and see my current shame!
  3. Ok, caveat that I am fully aware if you look at my MFP I've got a big problem currently...traveling and under more stress than I can remember having in years. So a real test to my ability to not soothe with food, and I'm currently failing. That said....when behaving, I find my body lets go of weight more quickly when I eat between 1000-1200 calories a day. When I was down in the 600-800 range like the NUT wanted me to be, I had really really long stalls. I seem to creep down each week. Probably not as fast as it should, but I am super happy. I DO still need to conquer the bad carb demon. I fully admit that. I'm not there yet.
  4. I'm having major issues right now with this same thing. Its what I feared pre-op, that made me feel like i should probably go for bypass. I still have the ability to eat the crap and I haven't conquered the beast of head hunger. I am currently being done in by two very bad foods that I keep eating, and they blow my calorie count. And i think the worst thing is, I'm still losing (albeit slower than I should be) so I'm having trouble motivating myself to change my behavior. I know I need to get back on the straight and narrow.
  5. I took metformin pre op and took it all the way through the liquid diet without issues. I stopped taking it post-op, and my blood sugars normalized almost immediately. I haven't been back on it since.
  6. I'm five months out and (knock on wood) I feel like its starting to slow down. I had a lot of hair to start out with, but hubby says its noticeable up front and a little bit in back. I was told to NOT wear hair in ponytails, because this stresses out your hair more. the hair is going to be lost whether its in a ponytail or not, its dead/dying. I was also told by nut to brush it actually as often as possible, because that encourages blood flow to your scalp and stimulates hair regrowth. I am using Nioxin products, but not sure if they are helping or not. I also am taking a Biotin supplement and try to always get in my 60-80 g of Protein a day. I think we just have to wait it out. New hair is already growing in and i hate the fuzziness, but at least I know its coming back!
  7. 5 months out and this still happens to me, and yes, it reminds me to drink Low BP related, which is somehow fluid intake related as well.
  8. Hey gang, long time no talk! I had a worrisome thing happen last night that I need feedback on. I'm down quite a bit, and I know at home I've had to adjust my cpap range downward. I hadn't adjusted my travel CPAP because I can't do that myself. Up through last month, it wasn't an issue that that was operating at a higher pressure. Last night, though, was using it in my hotel room and it just felt almost overwhelming suddenly, but i just went with it. I however, woke up in the middle of the night with my stomach hurting. I had a lot of air in me, I presume maybe from too much pressure? I stopped using it for the rest of the night and was better by am, but I had to (TMI) get a lot of that air out of my system, one way or another, in order to feel better, and even now, my tummy feels achy. Do you think I could have hurt my stomach with that at 5 months out? Should I be calling the doc? I probably will anyway, jsut to be safe, but I wanted to ask if anyone who had been on cpap ever had this happen. I know the very first night out of surgery that I was not allowed to use my CPAP to protect my stomach from injury, but I would think at this far out... anyway, any experience sharing would be great!
  9. It is crazy. And the companion thought that goes along with that its easy to lose weight...grr. I encounter this more from some than others. WIth my mom though, she wants me to stop losing weight. I got this same reaction from someone who had bypass, for crying out loud. I told both of them i had about 60 lbs more to go to get to the topof the normal BMI range, and they both very disapprovingly shook their head and said that I would be way too thin.
  10. I lost my prior post to you, but i have a lot of the same feelings at times. I lost as much weight in the three months preop as I've now lost in the 3 months post op. But I guess the overall good way to look at is it that the trend is downward. And we're hopefully going to be able to keep it downward. Despite our concerns and slowness, what positives can we focus on? I try to think about all mine as much as possible and give myself credti for the good behaviors I am doing. I have a lot of work to do on cravings and emotional eating. The sleeve keeps me wel lin check at meals, but eating snacks/slider foods was more of my downfall, and perhaps my decision for sleeve should have been RNY. Might have been a stronger tool.
  11. Commenting on the hair stuff, I am 3 months out and just waiting for the hair loss to start. I am prepared mentally for it, and MOST of my hair is quite thick, but I am thinner right up in front because of PCOS hair pattern issues. One thing my NUT told me is do NOT avoid washing your hair -- this only makes it worse, actually. You think it will make it better, but as a PP said, the hair is going to come out anyway, so keep your scalp healthy with whatever your normal washing schedule is.
  12. hope2befit, that is great to hear, I've been wanting to hear some stories of folks who have had it. The commercials around here for it also talk about it helping with mood swings, and I don't quite understand why that is. have you seen that to be true? I thought it just basically burnt things out, I can't understand how it actually changes hormones, but maybe because it doesn't build up, maybe some chemical signals don't get sent. I discussed it with my primary a couple of weeks ago, more because I've been having really pronounced mood issues around ovulation and TOM since surgery, and he upped my wellbutrin, but said if that doesn't help, that we may want to look at some other options like novasure since I also have the heavy bleeding issue. Now that I know I'm also having Iron issues makes me want to just have it done with!' I couldn't find this "Ferrets" brand she mentioned. I had her spell it twice and asked, as in, "like the rodent" and she said yes....so I got ferrosequel instead, since on my paperwork it mentions ferrous fumerate and ferrous gluconate as being the best forms of it for post-ops. Maybe I'll get some more energy out of this deal. I do feel like I have ok energy, so I'm not sure how bad a level of 24 is.
  13. My doc's office just called, and my Iron is low. It was 24, she said it should be between 50-150. I've seen lower levels in googling. the nurse said I should take Ferrets iron supplement. I have seen some of the other recommendations of other types to take, one of the things I'm worried about is that I am already have (TMI, ahem) constipation issues, and the iron is just going to make this worse, right? Grr. I think I am also going to take the plunge with Novasure. I've been toying with it because of lady problems, but now this added to the mix, makes me want to just cut the whole TOM thing out. Any advice or sharing of your story would be helpful!
  14. See you're being told to eat more, and I'm 3months out eating 1000-1200 and exercising avg of about 500 cal a day, and my nut today told me to cut back to 600-800, 1000 at most. It all seems so variable!
  15. hope it doesn't happen again! Goodness. Glad you are ok!
  16. That is really the only restaurant available? That's hard. I couldn't do the primary pasta stuff. When I go to someplace that has pasta, I get a protein entree, and maybe have a couple of bites of hubby's pasta. Shoot. But if you can't tolerate chicken, bummer. I would definitely ask if I could get some meatballs or sausage, what italian place doesn't have those? Boo if not! I'd just get some minestrone and a side of meatballs or an italian sausage.
  17. Wow, I can eat quite a bit more easily. This always worries me. The weight is coming off though, slowly. I don't drink with meals, I eat slowly. Tonight I had about 3 oz steak, 1 egg, a little less than 2 oz of cottage cheese and one slice of bread. Shouldn't have had the bread, but its still way less than I used to eat, but way way more than 2 oz. i wasn't given any guidance like that. Most of my meal examples I was given for the solid food stage were 4-6 oz of total food. I really am not sure. I am just full, not overly stuffed, from that meal. I didn't even get hiccups, which is what happens if I eat one bite too many.
  18. So, I am sure this has been asked before, but would like to see responses from current times. What Multivitamin were you prescribed post-wls, and do you still take that one, or have you switched to anything different? How about Calcium,D3, Iron, any other things prescribed by doc, related to WLS? I was told to take either optisource or Bariatric fusion. Both of these are required to be taken 4x a day, and I rarely get all 4 in I usually get 3 in per day. The NUT told me not to take Opurity (which is a once a day bariatric Vitamin, that I wouldn't get enough in,but honestly, I would get more in taking that once day than forgetting 1-2 tablets per day. What do you take? I was told to take Calcet or another chewable calcium citrate supplement. I took calcet the first month, and then slacked off the calcium for a couple of weeks, and right now, I am just taking my citracal petites to get something in, until I can order some calcet, but I'm not sure if the citracal gives me any benefits. I also take D3, a gummy form. So what do you do???
  19. I am waiting for it to start now, too. I have a box of nioxin and my multi has biotin in it (not sure if its enough) I know its going to start soon, just waiting....ugh. I have really thick hair but up in front (PCOS girl) it has thinned out, so I think that most of my head could survive but that front part I am really worried about.
  20. For some reason, I never really liked these preop, but I love Dove milk chocolate or Hershey Bliss. I started at about 3 weeks melting one piece down to liquid in my mouth. I had to stop bringing them in the house about two weeks ago though, couldn't trust myself anymore. The NUT said it was fine actually for me to have the one chocolate a night, so that took all the fun out of it...LOL! I have had sips of diet soda, but it doesnt taste very good any more. Hubby had a glass of wine a couple of nights ago, and offered me a sip, and I had it, it tasted great, but it was sooooo weird, I could FEEL it hit my stomach. it didn't hurt, but it produced a "sensation" -- anyone ever felt this? I am an avid surfer o' the web at work, but I get my work done and then some so I don't feel too guilty. But I do use my iPad on the guest network rather than surf on my computer...LOL. That way if someone looks at my desk when I am in the office I never look naughty....bwahaha!
  21. I have tried OA three different times. I think the program is very sound, I don't know if I wasn't ready for it, or what, but I generally found it kind of depressing. I also went to another money relaetd 12 step program for over a year, and found it helpful, but again didn't stick with it, it was better, I'd say try a few different types of meetings, try the online meetings for a feel of it. I personally am doing better with a homegrown WLS accountability group through mytinytank.net that is very positive, focused, and has great people beginning to attend. It fits my schedule better to call in for a brief monday morning meeting to get focused for the week and it gives me the accountability I need. I do think reading the OA program materials is very valuable. I read from "For Today" every night and regularly refer back to the books.
  22. That is sooooo awesome. Congratulations. You ROCK girl. I think I will have to do a sleep study of some variety to confirm because my apnea was severe, butr when I can stop I am so looking forward to that, and maybe being able to sleep on a plane without fear of disturbing others, though that may take more work as I'm told part of why I snore/have apnea is because of a severely deviated septum. Anyway, I tOTALLY get what a NSV that is. Woohoo!!
  23. Yeah, exactly this. For me, this tiem period is hard, because i actually do have to buy new clothes, but because its clothes, it feels frivolous, so I feel that guilt, too, but its unfounded. That said, I do definitely have problems with impulse control with spending (in addition to food--call it compulsion, addiction, whatever you want to call it, the end result is behaviors we have difficulty stopping that are relieved by doing things that taken one at a time, seem harmless, but if its a repeated pattern, it adds up to big problems.) If you always pay off your cards and have never had debt/money issues in the past, I wouldn't feel guilty, but I would be watchful as to whether the new behavior is now soothing things that food used to. Your gut about it is probably right.
  24. All good ideas! I wish my clothing exchange was more of an option but for my support group, their next clothing exchange isn't for two months yet, and from what I heard of the last one, most of the sizes being exchanged are still up in the 20s. So while I am thrilled to be below that point (OMG!) it means I've had to be mroe creative. I've used thrift shops, walmart/target clearance and one Craigslist ad for my casual clothes, but didn't have luck turning up formal business appropriate clothes this way, so had to surf the clearance racks best I could for that stuff. I am really hoping that my size 18s can last me quite a way down even if they are large.
