    No longer obese

Woohoo..... after a crappy 8 months post surgery I have finally gone from being in the obese class 3 category to the overweight category according to the BMI charts. I am delighted as I wasn't sure I would get here given all my post op complications. I still have a way to go to get into what they call the healthy range but I am already much healthier and fitter than I was before the surgery so it is already a win.

    Gastric sleeve as a teenager

Oh we will always be kind here. We are mostly much older than you but who doesn't love a young thing mixing it up and asking the right questions!?!? Sounds like you have your parents to guide you but your journey will be completely different (because everyone's is). I know that you'll be hoping to hear from really young people and I'm really hoping to hear from them too because that's a voice that has been missing here before. I suspect your skin will be much more forgiving than the older folks but that stretch marks might limit that a little bit. It means less to me than other people who I know have had surgery to tidy things up. They can share their experiences as you go along. Anyway - welcome. It's lovely to hear from you and I wish you all the best on your journey. 🤩

Even almost 5 years out, there are still things that surprise me. Walking around cars in a car park & realised my short cut progress was halted by a post & a dirty car. I thought no way will I squeeze through that tiny gap of maybe 10 inches & thought I’d have to walk back around. Took a breath & decided to edge sideways a little to test it. Slipped through that gap like butter. Didn’t touch the post or the dirty car. I was wearing white too & not a mark. Couldn’t believe it.

    Beating Myself Up

"Not a Diet" this has been the hardest mindset for me! I may need to see a therapist, because I keep telling myself "once I get to my goal, I can start indulging here and there, but till then I need to restrict myself" It is just a lot of trauma that has been resurfacing lately and when I ate those things so many thoughts started flooding back. Writing it out to you wonderful people is helping. I appreciate it! I am really pleased where I am at! I can do this!

    Beating Myself Up

Don't let this make you feel bad as it will only stress you out. We all have days where we have a little slip and that was all this is a little slip, you just start anew today Next time you have an event just be prepared and bring something with you that you can eat, that way you won't be hungry and hopefully not tempted by the goodies. That is what I have to do as tomorrow my company has its Christmas lunch (yes I know it is March) and there is nothing on the menu of the restaurant that I can eat as either fish which I am allergic to or not such great choices. I have already told my boss that the menu isn't suitable for me (she knows about my op) and that I will not eat with them but have a drink instead during the meal.

I had actually ordered an impossible breakfast plate with the multigrain toast. How I got a burger, not a clue but I really wasn’t about to complain.

    No drinking rule with snacks?

To rule out the possibility of a post-op leak, I did a swallow test the morning after my surgery (with a thinner liquid, not that chalky stuff). I got to watch on the monitor as the liquid went down my throat, into my pouch, and through to my intestine in the amount of time it took for me to carry on some chit chat with the imaging tech. It was less than a minute before the liquid was nearly all gone from the pouch and traveling through my intestines. Having watched it with my own eyes, I feel the evidence is pretty strong that waiting a full 30 minutes to "empty" your pouch of water is nonsense.
