    Food Before and After Photos

Sometimes i eat junk. (I am 4 years post op and have been in maintenance for over 3 years and have long ago learned what i can eat without imploding) I haven’t eaten since 2 pm yesterday (i got distracted by errands and then was just too pooped by end of day to do anything but sleep!), so i woke up pretty starving this AM. So when im super hungry, i don’t have the patience to cook something suitable so i just grabbed whatever was laying around. In this case it was a cold piece of bacon, 1/2 a Chinese bbq pork bun and a handful of ketchup chips!! Aside: this is actually a life lesson to have healthy things laying around so u dont end up with a breakfast like this lol. Had I eaten it all, it would’ve been 397 calories. Ended up just eating the cold bacon, the meat filling of the bun and some of the bun that got in the way of the filling lol. Estimated 159 cals for what i ate. (will likely eat the chips later though if someone doesn’t get to it first!)

    4 weeks down!

Hi! Just a little update 4 weeks after my RNY. I'm 43, have lupus and gained a lot of weight after 3 years of steroids. The extra weight adds more complications to my disease and I have really struggled to lose it on my own. I was 309 before surgery, 295 day of and currently at 278. I'm 5'8" and have always been a bigger woman with my lowest weight at 215. But at that weight I was very active, fit and healthy... until I got sick. This has not been an easy process for me and I was really losing my mind at the 3 week mark. But after week 4, I'm finally feeling a little more energy and a little more human. Some things I didn't really expect: I've become lactose intolerant. I sometimes get sick (nausea and crampy) after just sipping water. And I use the restroom much more frequently than I did before, which makes me a little nervous to socialize and even more nervous to travel. I hope this gets better! Other than that, I'm learning that slow progress is still progress! And I've already discontinued 2 of my lupus related meds, so I know I made the right choice! If anyone is having a hard time, I hope this helps.. it WILL get better!

    September surgery buddies!!

I was fortunate. Liquid for a week, pureed for five days, today started soft foods (although I started it yesterday). I am sick today though. I don't think it is surgery related but not sure.

My guess is that you live somewhere in the US that has particularly bad insurance and health outcomes. You have the power to move. My cousin in NY state was able to get an ablation for her PICOS and it put her into earlier menopause at 40. My coworker in MA is able to stay on the pill every day, year round, no off days. She never has a period. She’s been able to get 75 lbs off and kept it off. There are medical solutions in places that treat women like humans even if you are on Medicaid. You have the power to move, or mobilize voters and change systemic laws. Moving is easier. Honestly bring your whole family, they probably need better health care too! Gitty up to Grandma. Ok seriously, instead of getting sad or giving up, get mad and do something. You deserve good health care!

This might be a stupid question but can't your OBGYN prescribe hormonal replacements to help balance it out? Or, if you can't have kids is a hysterectomy an option? I know it's invasive, but then your hormones would be replaced my monitored therapy and be more stable? Don't give up, it might be fluctuation as your body readjusts too. Or, temporary.

Everyone above is right, lot's of reasons your weight might fluctuate. There's one reason I can guarantee you it's NOT. That you gained fat. While this is a bit of an oversimplification, you would have needed to eat 3500 calories more that you burned in the last week to gain just 1 pound of fat. Since at 3 weeks, you're probably not even eating 3500 calories in a week, I's a safe bet that whatever else is causing your overall weight to fluctuate, it's not that you added fat.
