My two actual surgeries went very well (1) gastric bypass 2) cholycystectomy (gallbladder removal including a 2 inch gallstone. See attached pics). Walked a lot from day 1 and used inspiration spirometer like crazy too 10 times per hour-was very compliant and literally, just soo thrilled to be in the post-op phase. Afterwards on day 4, I had some complications, however. Temp went from 99 (was 99-99.4 post op days 1-3) to 102.6 on day 4. At the ER, all blood work was normal, but the the ct scan with contrast & chest ray showed that I have ATELECTASIS as it turns out. (An area of one of my lungs didn’t reinflate) after I was taken off the ventilator during anesthesia. This can turn into pneumonia, so I’m pushing myself even harder to do every single thing I’m supposed to as perfectly as possible even though I’ve been at home still doing the inspiration spirometer and walking to our neighborhood stopsign 2-4 times/day. I’m postoperative day 6, and now down to 99 degree fever. I’ve also had pain with bending over since the immediate post-op (the pain is deep inside & the surgeon told me it’s due to the way he overlapped the muscle he stitched back together). This seems to be getting a little better now that I’m on day 5 however. Diarrhea is chronic is was always explosive & now just chronic. Also, STRANGELY,I did NOT feel any gas or shoulder pain what so ever while in the hospital. The nurses didn’t even hear any bowel sounds ‘til mere hours before discharge too!? Was quite cool actually! I did however walk the halls at least a 45-50 times in total I’de say. (Now, my dad had a pulmonary embolism after his hernia surgery and was pronounced dead before somehow coming back to us..?) Thus, I walked each hall about every hour to three hours at least 2 times as well as throughout the night at like 1am & 3am like a freakin’ mad woman! And that wasn’t due to gas pains or shoulder pain, just to mitigate chances of a blood clot like my dad had. Anyway, still ended up that I have this lung issue now and also due to the bodies natural stress levels from surgery, I have hundreds of cold sores on my lips going up to my nose. I’m taking a Lysine (amino acid) several times/day which is greatly helping. Otherwise, I’m just sleepier than normal. The good news is that I don’t need pain meds, though I have them on hand. I do not regret having surgery of course and still feel eternally grateful to have a second chance at better health. Oh yeah- I was in 3 blood pressure meds in post op day one went off all! All BP readings actually low! Also not on CPAP for apnea now! The health benefits for me started on day 1 post op.

    Gutted

I am so sorry to hear this[emoji53] that is very frustrating and imho that is unprofessional practices. You are working hard and you should not have to wait again. I do not understand the jelly/milk diet? Are you in the US? My weight management center does have surgical suites, but my dr does it in the hospital so his patients have the best care afterwards. I did have my egd done in the surgical suites at the weight management center. I understand you frustration with the waiting. I went in November last year for my consultation. They told me that my insurance would require me to lose at least 5 lbs and take 6 nutrition classes with 4 weeks in between each one. I had everything done by late Feb/ early March. They told me I had to bring my cpap with me and I said I havent been using it, because it seemed to strong. They said it was too old and they couldnt download the information from it or change it. So I had to go to neurology, and they ordered a home test. It did not give them results to conclude I no longer had sleep apnea. Then I had to go for a sleep study. 2 month wait for neurology, and a 4 month wait for the sleep study. Thankfully I no longer have it! I am now my 7th day post op. It has been a long, hard and frustrating road for me, so I can not even begin to know how you feel. You are not destined to die of obesity. Keep your head up and keep trudging along! My insurance company required me to lose 5 lb and I lost 25! Strive for better days ahead! Praying for you and hoping things get better. If you have any questions or even just to vent, lmk! I am happy to try to help!

    Reason for missing work??

Hernia repair. Same recovery and having to drink fluids for a while. I’m being upfront about mine because I think people will notice. [emoji16]

    Dehydration

Agree with Berry. It is so easy to get dehydrated. I did in the beginning. Thankfully, when I went to the ER it wasn't severe dehydration. But it was enough that it kept me there for several hours with IV fluids. I also didn't do the protein shakes the first week. Just clear liquids. After the trip to the ER, I came up with some things that helped me get my liquids, because water always made me feel sick. I did decaf unsweetened iced tea, Crystal Light lemonade (0 sugar) and Powerade Zero (no sugar or calories). Also, when water finally went down okay, I found that the only way I could drink it without feeling sick was to pour it in a glass and add a ton of ice. For me, then and now (11 months post op), it has to be ice cold. Take good care of yourself and experiment with different liquids and broths.

I am shocked to say that my approval came in less than 24 hours! I had one final thing to do (get PCP letter to surgeon) and then - BAM! - approval! :huh2: :huh2: (ETA: The insurance woman from the hospital said that she has never seen an approval come through so quickly.) This seems like it went a little too easily, but I know how lucky I am that I am able to get this surgery covered by insurance. As of January 1st, my insurance is changing and, though surgery is covered, MY surgeon is not in their network. There is no way I want to start all over again, so I am glad to be having the surgery on 10-Nov-10!! Oh, I live in PA and my BMI was exactly 40 (no co-morbid conditions) at the first doctor visit of my journey. I have since lost 17 pounds by dramatically reducing the amount of carbs I eat. I wish everyone all the best in their journeys!!
