Final Consults

Today I had the final consults with the ancillary team at KMC Bariatrics. First, I meet with a nutritionist. She had in front of her, the two week dietary intake form I had completed at my initial appointment with Dr. Shumacher. On the form, was a bunch of red ink marks...and I thought I was doing well when I made that all up! haha. My biggest problem was my protein intake and skipping breakfast. I work night shift, 12 hour shifts, and many days I only have one meal and a few snacks. I was instructed to try protein supplements, and eat breakfast 3 days per week when I am not working. I think that is do-able. Next, I meet with the psychologist where we discussed my everyday struggles with being obese. I told him that my mind and my body do not work well together, that I wanted to run with the kids, and be more active but being winded after sprinting just a few feet is a scary thing. We also discussed my marriage, which is great most of the time. We have our ups and downs, but who doesn't? He asked me if my husband would be supportive during my recovery with my new lifestyle and I said Defiantly, without a doubt. Next, I meet with the exercise physiologist. This consult was the consult that I was dreading. It started by calculating my BMI which is at a 49 and measuring body fat with a hand held machine, which was also at 49%. Then we sat down and discussed my activity. He assured me that once I began to lose weight, the pain from exercising would decrease and I would be able to do more. I told him that I love to walk (when given time and energy with my work schedule) and I normally walk 2-4 miles a few times per week. He said that I should continue to do that, and to also add in strength and muscle building activities with 5+ pound weights. I was expecting a full work out/body assessment Biggest Loser style.....I am glad that part is over!

Day 1- Sept' 15, 2011

Today was my first day of my 3 week liquid diet... I ordered the protein from Bariatric Advantage.. I was so ready for it.. All this week all I did was eat.. I topped off last night with Homerun Inn pizza and I left the restaurant feeling so sick... When I got up this morning I knew I was ready for my day when I got on the scale and it read 280.4.. I have never weighted that in my life... I had a seminar today so it was easy to not think about food. At lunchtime, I left and went to the store to get stuff for my journey. Gum- sugar-free candy, vitamins, etc...   I had a doctor's appt also. We went over my surgery which is scheduled for Oct' 6th. I weighed in at his office at 284.. Ugh... I told him that I was ready for the next three weeks and the weeks after surgery with the liquid diet. He told me if I got hungry, every other day I could have a Zone protein bar.. I was so excited. I can also drink my coffee, which would have been so hard to give up... Decaf does not do anything for me.. I do not want the non-caf headaches. He explained to me what to expect the surgery date the the weeks afterwards.. I figured today is Sept' 15 th and I should be able to eat by my first fill appt on Nov' 15th..   I just need to remember how I feel today extremely heavy. Getting on the scale and seeing 280 was overwhelming.. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. Nothing fits me.. Nothing looks good on me.. I hate the way I look.. It has been months since I actually looked in the mirror and felt good about the way I looked. I'm so ready for this surgery.   I shall see what tomorrow brings....

Nesting instinct kicking in...so weird

Lately I've been having the urge to organize and clean everything in my path. Last Saturday I rearranged my closet, drawers, make up kit, my kids closet, their drawers, and washed every bit of laundry that was in sight. Today I reorganized all the file cabinets in my office and rearranged my desk. This may not sound so out of the ordinary to some of you, but for me, doing all those tasks (cleaning tasks) all at once in a fell swoop like that is a rarity. In fact, the only other times I've gotten the energy and gumption to clean so fervently was in those last few weeks of all my pregnancies. There's something instinctual in a woman that gives her the drive to "prepare the nest" when she's expecting a baby. I KNOW that I'm not pregnant, so I'm guessing that my behavior may be because i"m anticipating this surgery. The birth of the new me is coming and I guess I'm just gettin my house and job life in order. Another theory that I have is that this is all stemming from my CPAP machine. My energy levels have improved greatly. Initially I wasnt convinced. I guess I was in denial about my apnea. But I"m so grateful now because I'm able to get things in order and I dont feel as sluggish and as cloudy as I used to. Everything seems to be falling into place. I'm even more ready for this sleeve than before. Just wanted to share my insight and positive attitude with yall. Thanks for reading! Sorry about the typos and/or grammatical errors, it's kinda hard typing on a telephone keyboard sometimes! lol By the way, check out my vlog on YouTube. My channel's name is "Sleeviewonderland". Please comment and subscribe, I'd really appreciate it! Here's the link: My Vlog - Sleeviewonderland

It's a go

Today went much better. The surgeon apologized for the confusion and asked what I took out of the original appointment. I talked about everything he said to me the line backer build, the BMI scale and what he feels is considered healthy for me. He says when he was talking about that stuff, he was talking about my goals after surgery, to not set unrealistic goals for myself, that he did not mean that I should not have surgery. My insurance approved the surgery. I went and had my additional blood gas test done. The surgery is set for the 3rd. I go in for my pre-surgery work on the 27th, I see my doctor on the 28 for his pre-op clearance. It is full steam ahead at this point.

From: Flying with a band - advice from my Doc

Hi,   I had an interesting conversation with my doc last night when I went in for my fill. I thought I'd share some advice she gave me.   When we were talking about my upcoming trip to LA, she immediately asked how soon I was going and said not to eat a big solid meal right before or during the flight.   Here's why - when she and her husband were flying to Mexico, her husband partially inflated a neck pillow. After takeoff, they noticed that the pillow was now extremely filled due to the change in air pressure. They let some air out of it and a few minutes later it was again filled to the max! She said it was an amazing visual and something she wanted to share with her patients. Basically, you're not at risk of bursting your band or anything, but it WILL tighten your band, and therefore eating while in flight could be a problem and make my tummy upset  (she thought drinking would be okay).   Her advice was to just have a light soup or something for dinner before I fly, but then just have water while in flight, so I don't get uncomfortable from changes in the band while in the pressurized cabin.   Has anyone else heard this advice? My doc is pretty sharp, so I'm not taking any chances!!   Source: Flying with a band - advice from my Doc

I'm so hungry....

yep...I said it. And it's only day 1 of my liquid diet.   I feel the need to share my experience though. My 2 year old son had his tonsils and adenoids removed today and he is such a champ and doing great. But probably not the best day to have to start my diet.   The surgery center was an hour away from home so I packed my 2 shakes in a bag with ice. Chocolate shake...is tolerable but the Cafe one...not so much! Anyway, my Mom came down for his surgery as well and of course her and my husband were starving 5 hours later so they asked if they could grab a bite to eat......DEEP SIGHS....how could I say no. So they decided they wanted Chili's. Can I JUST TELL YOU THAT WAS NO FUN AT ALL!!!!! My hubby felt pretty bad about it but I really wanted him to eat. BUT I made it through lunch.........   Now it's dinner.....I made Jacob his noodle soup....reserved the broth for me! YAY!   and then I put the roasted potatos and onions on to back with the French's Onion Baked Chicken.........   IT IS TIME TO LEAVE THE HOUSE.....Just sayin'   So to sum up my blog for the day.....If I make it through the next two weeks I KNOW I WILL be successful with the lapband tool.   PS...........I really HATE the shakes

First Day Blogging, ever.

Well here I am without much to say today. Of course, tongue-tied for a change, and on the day I begin my first blog, lol. Feeling good about this week's weight loss. Have made some less than healthy food choices (had wine on Tuesday, yikes). Working on that. I read a post today about a person who is worried about their pride. It got me thinking. I am not religious per say, but they had some valid thoughts on the topic. I too am struggling with my excitement which now has begun to mingle with outright pride and superior feelings. Being very ashamed of this hasn't seemed to come close to stopping it unfortunately. What's worse is I have even directed these feelings toward my sweet husband. However, I rarely say a thing to him about losing his weight, as I promised before surgery I wouldn't bug him because of my choice to get the sleeve. I SAY its because of health, and it is, but not only. I honestly would like him to get thin with me. I want him to look good in his jeans. Is that sooo wrong? Yes, I am sure it is. But I am not on here to lie and make excuses now am I? Also, I never was very keen on sitting and eating a huge portion myself. Now, when I witness people eating a huge portion, it really disgusts me. I have learned so far in these 3.5 weeks post op that I have to just stay quiet a lot. Furthermore, I am learning the fine art of faked modesty. When people say I look so good 30 pounds lighter, I smile and thank them graciously ... when all I really want to say is "I know right!" Giggles. Well, so much for being tongue-tied.

Started Preop Antibiotics in Mexico

I have been in Cancun, Mexico since Sept. 10, 2011. I started the preop antibiotics yesterday. So far so good. I will not start the liquid protein shakes until I get home. I looked at pics of myself at Xplor and really started thinking ahead to how much easier it would have been to climb the 14 platforms to zipline or walk the beach to the snorkle spot if I didnt weigh so much! I was exhausted but proud that I finished the two circuits. I plan to continue my daily activity when I get home so that I am used to exercising.   I am excited about my surgery on Sept 28 but it really hit home that I will have to work at it just as hard as I did yesterday. There were times when I wanted to just walk down the stairs and give up. But the sucess was worth it. I can push myself to my limits. I found that it really wasnt a "limit" I could do more!

I did it on purpose

Yesterday was such a good feeling, I prayed and asked God to allow me to relive that same feeling again. I woke up this morning in a good mood on purpose this morning . I didn't care that it was raining or that I had a meeting with a client who at the last minute cancelled. I care that I woke up with joy in my heart. I think we beat ourselves up over the smallest things and we carry it all though out the day. I think if we make it our business to say no matter what I will be OK and not look to the negative side of things when something we were expecting goes wrong. I have read some blogs and when someone doesn't lose as much as they would have liked their mood changes. I am very much understanding of how disappointment can make you feel. We have to change the way we handle the disappointment. That's what this journey is all about doing things differently then how we did it before. We can't keep doing the same things and expecting different results. I do things now on purpose, like saying good morning to a complete stranger or smiling at the lady in line behind me. I have no idea who they are but my hello and my smile may be what they needed to get them out of their bad moods. We have to really focus on the things we have and not so much of what we don't have. remember the 5 things that you are thankful for.   I am thankful for..... 1. My God is forgiving and loving God 2. My Kids 3. My health 4. My Children's Health 5. Courage, and the ability to take a chances.   You may not be were you want to be today, but you are a lot closer then you were yesterday.   Until tomorrow.   Msoutlaw

11 hours out of surgery...

Well guys, here it is 1am (ca time) and i am wide awake. I am 11 hours out of surgery and so far so good. I do have a little pressure aroung my entire abdomen but no pain (is this the gas that everyone mentioned)? My diet is probably not good cause i was told to eat a light breakfast the day before my surg and nothing else till surg.   So I break down what i ate in the past 3 days (day 3 is as we speak 1:30am)   tues: peanut butter and jelly sandwich at 9am, gatorade thought out the day   weds: nothing am, surg at 1pm, couple sips of water and ice chips, main meal 1/2 cup of chicken soup broth only   thurs : 1 am, 1/2 on ministrone soup broth only.   So far so good and the only discomfort is in my chest and im guessing that that is from when they intubated me.   came home from the hospital and took a quick shower to wash of the old blood and to clean it up. wiped the incisions with hydrogen peroxide and left open to air out.   Havent really had to take any pain meds but def taking the meds for nausea and vomitting just in case..   Here is a funny storry: as women we are always trying to hold in our tummies in whereever we are and i cannot for the life of me at this point "suck it in" and another funny point... my tummy is making these strange noises...! is this getting me ready for the gas???     Anywho, off to bed to try and catch some sleep. Have a great day yall.     Unsure78 (maybe time to change my header) Suggestions      xoxox,   unsure78

Post-op Pain

Made it through the surgery, Finally on 9/12. It was a long 3 months of check off lists to get through. I have seen fabulous results with others and was so very excited. Surgery was great, I stayed positive right up until the versed took affect, When I awoke in recovery, I could feel something inside was different. The first 48 hrs was horrible...The pain from the gas was horrendous. I walked all night in my hospital room.I kept saying to myself what have you done? Well I am just about to go into pod 4 and I am feeling much better.Lots of rest and sleep helps and walking... I had heard about the gas pains but never imagined them to be that painful. The only way I could pass the gas was to vomit from the nausea. The usual drugs werent working for the nausea, so the doc gave me a scopalamine patch that you wear for motion sickness on the ships. Worked like a charm. Has anyone else experienced that much pain Post-op?
