19 Days untill Surgery 5 Days untill Pre-Op

This is really going to happen. I have been overweight my whole life and I am so close to ending my battle with it. My life is about to change as I know it. I just dont want to let my self down. I need to be here for my family. They give me strength. I can do this. The feeling of knowing that you have dreamed of something your whole life and now its about to happen is unreal. I have to pinch myself to realize that I have worked hard to get to this point and I have a lot more hard work ahead.

More fears...

OK, so tonight as I was settling in upstairs, I turned on the news and they were covering a plane crash at an air show. I guess it got to me, because I began to feel anxiety about the upcoming flight to San Diego for my sleeve surgery. The part that bothers me is that my sister is coming too, so it wouldn't just be me. She has a son too, so both of our boys would be without moms if anything bad happened .   Before that, I was downstairs with my baby and "fiance." He has been acting really different ever since I told him I was doing the surgery whether he liked it or not. He's trying to eat healthy all of a sudden, and it seems like he's being a lot nicer because I guess he knows what I'll look like if my VSG is a success... (yes, I do feel somewhat resentful about our situation but that's another story)...   But... what if it isn't a success?   What if I don't lose weight? What if the loss is really really slow and everyone piles on with criticism about what a bad decision I made? Now that he and everyone knows what I'm doing, it adds to my pressure to succeed. But, unfortunately, I don't do well under pressure. At least I can't do what I used to do and eat my way back up the moment I'm discouraged.   Other fears: I read a shocking statistic: The mortality rate for gastric surgery is 1 in 200!!! The article I read said the risk increased the heavier the person is due to blood clots. I'm not too heavy, but I will be on a 4.5 hour plane ride a few days after surgery. I guess I need to sit near the bathroom so I can walk around as much as possible on the flight.   I guess now that my surgery date is set (October 8th), I'm starting to do my usual fight or flight/self sabotage routine. I haven't sent off my deposit check yet, but I did pay $800 for our plane tickets. I told myself I'm going to give myself the weekend to really be sure I want to go through with this. I'm 99.99% sure that I'll send off the deposit on Monday.

inching a little closer

Yesterday I confirmed that my doctor sent the referral into my insurance company so I assumed it would be at least a week until I heard anything. Well today I received a call from the ghc bariatric surgery office scheduling an interview with the head nurse. I was told that she is going to discuss my surgery options and explain the entire program. I don't want to assume, over-think, or stress on this. I'm glad that they got my referral and I'm hoping that the phone interview is just another step in the right direction. Maybe they just want to confirm that I'm serious before making me drive down to Bellevue, which is over an hour away from where I live. See, here I go worrying about it. Thankfully I have some other things going on with work and at home to distract me. Unfortunately one of those things is my carpal tunnel, which was just diagnosed and is slowly driving me mad. Just when I thought I was as crazy as I could possibly be, I go ahead and surprise myself

Post-op Day 2

Hello Kiddies... today is Day two after surgery and we are back at Hotel Ticuan after staying overnigyht at the Hospital Mi Doctor Tuesday night and Wednsday night. I was very comfortable there at the hospital. There were 3 Doctors that handled my case. One was the Anestegiolist, i had a general Doctor, and then the Surgeon Dr. Garcia Govea. All were extremely personable and spoke good english. I think Dr. Garcia spoke the least amount, but I could still understand him pretty well. My nurse, Wendy, spoke very little, but she was very good at letting me know what she was doing through gestures plus, I knew just enough spanish to get her attention on certain things. I was almost a bit apprehensive to leave the hosptal to go bck to the hotel. I was given 3 medications -- pain, gas, & antibiotics--- to take for the next several days. I do have to say that I wasnt´really allowed to take the Gas-x strips that i bought because the Dr. said gas medicine was already being pumped into my IV. Oh that reminds me. The I.V. was one negative experience. Apparently i dont´hav eany visible veins on the tops of my hands or on the side. They stuck me so many times to get a good veign, but it left my arms all bruised up. Finally when they got one on my right hand, it slipped out the next day and the process of prickling me started again. They finally went for the big vein in the crease of my right arm -- where they take blodd when you´re donating.   Other than that, everything else worked out well. The first day, I layed down for most of the day and eventually begged the nurse to get me up and walking. The gas pain was almost too much to take! I didn´t fell any soreness from the wounds, only GAS. Each time i burped, it felt sooo good. When i tooted a little, it was like a ray of sunshine lol. I wasn´t allowed to try drinking the day of the surgery, but at the end of the second day, they gave me gatorade, water ice chips, apple juice and that blue stuff to check for leaks. Needless to say, the only thing I really drank was the blue stuff becaus I know it was very serious for me to do so. Everything else i sipped, not getting much in at all.   So today, day two:´I´m back at the hotel, forcing myself to sip on some gatorade every 30 minutes and walking every 30 minutes. I can tell you I feel 75% better than how i felt on Wednesday into Thursday. I´lll just keep walking and keep trying to sip sip sip on my liquids.   My fiance, was with me the whole time and has been pointing that camera in my face the whole time. There was a little bit of nausea after the surgery so I did vomit once or twice and he was there w/ the camera lol. He got the surgical assistant to show him the part of my stomach that was removed, so yes, now we have a picture of that. lol. I´m going to post as many pics as I can when i get home on Sunday.   Well, i´m in the business center at the hotel and it´s directly across from the restaurant so I´m ready to go back to my room lol.   TTFN!

2 weeks of H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS!....

Might or might NOT be so bad..........   You know I don't have to cook for my family every night....my husband has offered to take that over for the time being....but I feel the need to push myself and be around all the food just like I would be any other time. So I'm cooking and sitting with them like we always do for dinner. I figured if I can't do it....what's the point in me going through with the surgery. I have to make changes....but the people around me don't. Food is such a big part of my ENTIRE FAMILY's life that unless I plan on never going around for cookouts, holidays, birthdays, Sunday's, or just what ever...I better get used to this now. I won't NOT be a part of all the get togethers.........(just to give you an idea of how big my family is....I have 15 nieces and nephews....and I wont talk about cousins)   It's funny....I had the conversation with my husband before I decided to do this....I said "you know there is still a lot of work you have to do to make this successful even after you have the lap band". I said "it is going to take a lot of will power....but if I had will power I wouldn't need surgery right?" He couldn't answer that question any more than I could.... But it is simple to answer for me today....all of a sudden...and I'm not sure that this will be true for me 6 months from now or not but we will see..... For something that seemed impossible before (loosing weight)....with a tool that can help me.....I feel like I have the will power to do my part and help myself.   And I have to add....I am pretty proud of myself... Yes even just 2 days in. I have not only given up solid food for the time being but I have given up sweet tea! For me this is almost as painful as it was when I quit smoking over a year ago! LOL

3 days and counting...

I'm on the home stretch!!! Only 3 days before my all-day fast...then surgery! I am so excited, can you tell!?! Why would anyone be thrilled to NOT eat! I have lost over 10 lbs already and am sooo happy. I already have pants that are starting to get big, which is so encouraging when going through something like this.   I had my final clearance with my Dr yesterday and he said all looked well and it was a go! I felt like I was at a space shuttle launch, and just heard 'start the engines'!   I hope everyone out there makes it through the weekend, that is the hardest part. I so want to order a big pizza tonight! BUT, the weight reduction is soooo worth it!

Aetna Insurance...Waiting...Waiting...Waiting...

My paperwork was submitted yesterday to the insurance company. I called Aetna today and they said they had no record of my paperwork. So I called the lapband center Im going to and the girl thats working on my case said that she sends it through a different way and that most of the staff is not able to see it....I asked her if I should continue to check on the progress of the case and she said not to....that I should just let her handle it from here because we dont want to "rock the boat" too much...It seems like the insurance makes decisions however they want to on these surgeries...Like even if your meeting ALL the requirments that THEY set for you it seems like they can still find a way to deny it...I am trying not to think about it too much. I really hope I get approved and Im trying to stay positive...I just feel like insurance companies only think about the short term costs of surgery and not how beneficial and money saving it will be in the long run..

UGH!!!

I know I just did a blog entry but as I previously stated - I have a lot on my mind.   Anywhoo, I have a friend and he is very supportive of me having surgery. He's fine with me the way (size) that I am and initially when I shared with him that I wanted to have surgery and later told him that I was definitely having surgery he was and has been nothing been supportive, cooperative and understanding. HOWEVER, just about every conversation we have he mentions the surgery but not necessarily in a bad way.   True examples:   We were talking about how quickly the weather had changed and just as quickly for no rhyme or reason he says, "when you have your surgery and you're all thin I'll still love you."   We were talking about 2 Fast 2 Furious and out of the blue he says, "will you still love me when you're thinner after your surgery?"   He asked if I enjoyed vacation with my family and before I could answer he said, "guys try to hit on you now, but after your surgery will you continue to ignore them? You're not gonna leave me right?!"   While talking on the phone he kinda worked my nerves and I was hang up and he said, "and the transformation begins. Before your surgery you had more patience now you don't." Then you caught himself because I haven't had surgery yet.   There's always some reason to mention it, how he knows I'll be after I have it, the "transformation", etc. He's a wonderful guy and I love him.. I do, but today I questioned for the first time why on earth did I tell him. Of course I had to because he is who I bounce things off of, he's a special friend and he cares about me, and I wanted to share it with hm, but...UGH!!!

Calgon take me away...

I almost feel like I did when I was pregnant and I had the urge to handle everything. When I was 7 months I was so tired of waiting for my husband to paint the nursey when he came home from work I had it done and had the furniture arranged. That's how I feel now. I have the urge to clean, throw things away, make sure bills are handled, things at work are beyond organized, etc. I know this is because I have so much on my mind, surgery is on Tuesday and I want to be prepared. Yesterday I went to get my protein powders and vitamins so I was able to scratch that off of my To Do List. I still need to stock my fridge/freezer with the things that I will need after surgery. My mind is on so many different things every so often I have to say, "Nicole, take a deep breath and relax".   Calgon take me away...

Preop Antibiotics

I am on day three of preop antibiotics and I am in a Cancun all inclusive. I am starting to have loose stools so it's anyone's guess which one of these may be the cause. I have horrible taste in my mouth in the AM that taste like the Biaxin. Yuck. Not starting liquid diet till Sunday Sept 18, 2011 as I only have to be on liquids one week prior to my surgery. I am on antibiotics and prilosec for two weeks so hopefully I will be able to tolerate this especially switching to liquids which I believe will make it worse.   Maybe that is how I will be losing my preop weight. Bowl Cleansing. LOL

Frustrated! Not losing....

I know that the first month or so is for healing, but I can help but to be frustrated. The scale hasnt moved for me at all. I'm getting about 600-700 calories a day. I still feel like I'm eating too much. I track everything on myfitnesspal. I've only worked out once this week, but will work out today. Hopefully I can get one day in this weekend.   I just dont get how healing stops weight loss. I feel maybe its something that the doctor tells people so they dont go crazy. I'm so impatient I know. I'm a pessimist by nature so I'm not too sure this is all gonna work, but I'm gonna give it a try. I eat a lot less than I did before and before I didnt eat much. I'm tired of the scale not moving. I even feel more bloated, but it could be constipation. I dunno I'm just so mad.

Free cookie

I was on my way to the gym yesterday and the weather had turned unexpectedly cold and rainy. I didn't have a jacket on, was only wearing a dress with a thin sweater over it and I was FREEZING. I had a bit of time to kill before my class so I decided to make a quick stop at a local coffee shop to warm up. I ordered a tea and because I was starving...a cookie. I know....why am I eating cookies? But this was a very small shop, they had nothing else and I decided to have it. Anyway, the guy at the counter said that he could give me a broken one for free and I said "hey it's still a cookie, right"? So I paid for the tea and then sat down to warm up a bit. After a few minutes, I hear the guy at the counter say my name. I looked up a bit surprised and he told me that his sister shared the same name. i couldn't figure out how he knew my name in the first place and I think I looked pretty funny looking at him and then looking down at myself to figure out where he'd read it. It turned out that I still had my work badge on, it was peeking out from under the sweater and that he could see it. When I finally put two and two together, I laughed slightly and said "I couldn't figure out how you knew that". He smiled and said that he didn't mean to creep me out and I smiled back and said that he hadn't. I wasn't sure if he was flirting or not...maybe he was a little. Normally, this is where I would freeze up and immediately go back to my tea without engaging but I took a breath, and made myself stay in the moment. We talked for a few minutes about the name thing and then I went back to finishing my tea and he went back to preparing to close the shop. Ten minutes later, it was time for me to head out so I said....thanks for the tea and cookie...and he said, you're welcome...have a good night...Petunia, with a smile. I looked back and smiled, waved and left.   The whole thing made me realize how little experience I have with men being flirtatious. Intellectually, I know that men rarely talk to a woman without some idea of flirtation, I've learned that from my guy friends many, many times. And I know that when I was heavier, incidents like the one in the coffee shop almost never happend to me. So while he could have just been being friendly, it's more than likely that he was also being mildly flirtatious, but in a nice, chilled out, unscary way which is still fairly foreign to me. I can more easily believe that he was just being friendly because...why would anyone flirt with me? But I know that's self-defeating talk....there's no reason to believe that some portion of the male population won't find me attractive. And the longer I stay stuck in the idea that no one would be interested...the longer I'll stay single and lonely. So I'm proud of myself for not clamming up yesterday and for remaining open to the interaction. It didn't have to "go anywhere" but I think that if I stay open, then someday, it will "go somewhere" and I'll meet a nice guy. I'll forgive myself the cookie that brought that lesson with it
