hoping I'm not anemic!

I cannot wait to schedule my surgery! Since I've decided on this surgery, I've been eating more and more. Tomorrow I'm going to attempt to begin a pre-op plan--nothing major, just mostly low carb until my surgery date.   The only thing holding me up from setting a date is I'm waiting for my PCP to tell me the results of my complete blood count. I have a history of anemia that I thought I overcame for the most part, but I haven't checked on it in a while, and I wasn't taking vitamins until I decided to get this surgery.

consultation with surgeon...

Hello tomorrow is my consultion with my surgeon and i'm very excited. The idea of starting over with life is something i never thought could happen. I have research and attended so many support group and seminars in order to make well informed decision. Now i am ready! I hope that everything goes well in the morning and he can set a surgery date. I have only let a few people know about my decision not that i am ashamed, I feel that I need positive people around me. My husband feel this was an easy decision but he doesn't understand he is just afraid once i get smaller i will leave him... who knows lol. I just want to do something for me for a change...

The earth moved slightly and so did the scale

Finally, i got on the scale this morning and they moved. down 1.5 lbs. I was so happy to see a new number. Then I went to work. Why do some people just have to burst your bubble. I was talking to a nurse and we were talking about losing weight and I said, I had been stuck at the same weight fo a while and was frustrated. She said,"You look amazing" I said, thank you. Then I was telling her about hurting my knee exercising and how worried I had been about not losing and afraid of gaining, so when the scales moved this morning and I was down 1.5 I was elated. She says well you know why don't you, you stopped exercising so you are losing muscle. Just what the blankty blank I need to hear. I know she is probably right but it sure did deflate my mood. Sighhhhh! The day ended well, I went to PT and was able to do the eliptical bike, 599 steps in 10 minutes. My balance sucks, the therapist told me I could use my WII Fit and do the balancing exercises and step exercises. Really low impact compared to what I was doing but I was excited. I decided I would stay positive and not let negative comments distroy my mood. "It is what it is" and right now it is slow going, but it is going. Another thing, not sure what is up with my stomach. I keep getting so bloated and so much gas, I know TMI but seriously, why all the gas. I had a few slices of granny smith apple yesterday and I though I was going to die. Seriously I was doubled over with pain and then later it feels like someone is ripping me open. thank you all for your support, I really appreciate all my lap band friends and all the info we share. I learn so much from reading others blogs. Have a great rest of the week bandsters.

Getting ready to submit paperwork to insurance....Lapband office not calling me....

Need some advice. I have been working on getting lapband with my surgical center and insurance for about 8 months now. I FINALLY have all the things done that I needed to do for insurance and am ready to send my paperwork off to the insurance company. The company that I am working with has been pretty good up until recently. When I call to check on my progress I feel like Im aggravating them... Yes, I may call everyday sometimes...but is that a bad thing to want to know how my progress is going? I really want lapband. Now that Im getting close enough to get an answer I feel like its taking FOREVER. The girl I spoke with yesterday told me she would call me today and we would go over all my informaiton that she is going to send to the insurance company before she sends it. Its almost 2:30 where Im at and still no phone call...I try to email sometimes and now I get absolutely no responce.... I feel like I would do their job better than they do it. Im frustrated and tired of calling her because everytime I do I feel like im being a hassle to her! I dont think I should have to feel like this...What do you think?

Microwave vs CrockPot

Well, today I went to the Dr. for what I thought was for a fill and that was no the case. I weighed in today and I lost 8lbs in two weeks . I was so shocked that I told her that she had to weigh me again. lol. I don't snack between meals because I don't have desire to do so. I drink water all day. I brought the Brita water bottle and I use that all day. I put lemons in my water. My total weigh loss since surgery is 34lbs in 6 weeks. I am excited, and I also think it will make me work harder each week. I had to really think about my journey and do I want a microwave journey or a Crock pot Journey. Let me explain: Have you ever cooked a roast? If you put the roast in the microwave, yes it will cook fast but how does it taste? is it tender or tough? When you use a crockpot, you season the roast and you let it SLOW cook. when you come home your house is filled with the great smells from the roast. It took time to become tender and you can taste the seasonings. I think that's how we have to look at this journey. If you want to lose it fast you can, but what are the chances that you will be happy and that you won't gain the weight back? If you take your time and allow yourself to adjust to you new life style and take every milestone for what it is you will be able to enjoy so much you allowed you body to prepare for the new you. I smiled today because I know my hard work paid off and it will continue to see the progress weather its 1-2 pounds a week or 4 pounds a week it all takes time. We all have goals and that great, we just don't need to rush to get there.     Until tomorrow   Msoutlaw

Everyone: what I have learned

Ive been meaning to post this for a long time but I decided to wait until my 1 year bandiversary. One year ago today I truly thought the band was the best thing for me. I was working out a lot and eating what I thought was a good diet most days and still I was gaining weight. I was 231 on my surgery day.   I spent the next 10 months doing what my doctor told me. I did not need to be on a liquid pre-op diet because I was paying out of pocket and those diets are primarily for the insurance companies. I worked out 12-15 hours a week - hardcore stuff too! I ate very few calories and kept getting fills until I could barely eat and I was throwing up all the time. I was sure with the calorie restriction I would drop the weight and then I would have an un-fill later.   I lost weight on the scale VERY slowly. It was disappointing but at least I was losing. In ten months I lost 40 lbs...working SO hard at it and doing what the doc said.   Then, I started doing some research and went to a very reputable nutritionist / trainer in my area. She was a former national female body builder and if anyone knows how to lose fat and gain muscle... its a body builder.   She reviewed my diet and exercise regime and schooled me on how WRONG I had been doing things. She gave me a plan. Now, in just one month, I have lost 10 lbs of FAT and maintained my muscle. Before, I was losing a lot of muscle since my body didnt have the "fuel" it needed to burn during the day and my workouts.   Im writing this to save many of you from the agony that I went through. Dont keep getting fills thinking you are doing the right thing. You may lose pounds but very little fat. You must keep muscle as that is what keeps your metabolism going so that when you arent working out or when you have a piece of cake it will burn it right off.   I found out that I needed to eat about 1700 cals a day and cut way back on workouts. She demanded only 40 min of moderate cardio 4 times a week and 2 days of full body weight training. My meal plan was eating 5 times a day. All whole, natural foods. Protein, carb and fat in every meal. I was unable to do this due to my band. So I went to talk to the doc who happens to have a body builder as a wife and who also happens to be trained by my trainer. I had ALL of the fluid taken out of the band so Im able to eat again. He told me most bandsters wont do the diet that I just described above and that is why he advocates for the band. He agreed that the DIET is 90% of FAT loss and doing that diet would not only get the FAT off much quicker than the band but also while keeping muscle. With the band and restricting your food, you will likely lose muscle. He also agreed that the band is great for people who refuse to diet and also the amount of money they make off of people like us is enourmous.   These are the facts people. Make your best decision. Feel free to email me for more tips if you like. I am currently in a size 10 - I weigh 180 lbs and I will soon be in an 8. Im strong and healthy thanks to the nutritionist, not my surgeon.

The start of something great

This is the first time I have ever blogged.   After my decision to have the LapBand these were my dates:   My meeting was on May 24,2011, followed by my first doctors appointment on July 06, 2011. My surgery was scheduled for August 1, 2011,but the doctors office called and I had surgery July 25th. I have lost 31lbs to date and have had one fill.   I hope this blog will help my with my feelings of discouragement and happiness.

Adventure Bootcamp here I come!

Hello my fellow bandsters,   After much debate with myself, back and forth and indecision I have signed up for a 4 week outdoor bootcamp with a girlfriend. I was going to do cardio kickboxing but at this point feel the bootcamp will be better. I'm nervous, excited and ready to go. Not looking forward to a 4:50am wakeup but it'll be worth it.   I have a doctors appointment tomorrow. I'm glad to be seeing the doctor since I am hoping to get my first fill. Not feeling any restriction at this point and I'm almost 2 months post surgery. I have been feeling really nauseaus lately (NOT expecting a baby) and its not when I'm eating its random and frequent so I want to ask the doctor about that too not sure if its the band or just me.   That's about it for now.   Wishing everyone a great week!

Judgmental People and other annoying stuff

4 months, 75 down, 26 to go for my initial objective. Over Labor Day weekend, I went to a BBQ where I saw many people who hadn't seen me in the last four months. Boy, were they ever surprised at how I look. Many of them offered me congratulations on how well I was doing. It still feels good to hear. However, I was surprised by a few who remain convinced that if I had just a little willpower and stick-to-it-ness, exercised more, I wouldn't have needed the LapBand. I guess that many people feel that way but (mercifully) don't share those thoughts. Imagine telling a lung cancer patient during their chemo they should have used more willpower and not smoked. Not to mention that numerous studies show that fat people "see" food differently than normal-weight ones......(To read the rest, visit my external blog at michaelwasfat.blogspot. Thanks to a Patient Doctor

I went in to Doc Collier to get some solution taken out because I have been under alot of stress (bad heel spurs) and I was thinking he would try to talk me out of doing this but he was very understanding I tell you he gets more likeable at each visit. He is always patient with me and my cheating and he tries to give me ideas of things to do. he has always been very understanding and he has a wonderful office of ladies who work there too. I hope to be better soon and get back on track

8 months post op

So this last Saturday (Sept 10) marked the 8 months post op point for me on this journey. I am still amazed at what a process it's been. I have had success well beyond my wildest dreams. As is often the case nothing is ever completely positive. There have been some bumps to work through that I never would have predicted before surgery. Primarily dealing with relationships. Relationships with both people and my relationship with food. It has been a learning experience in so many ways.   In snapshot form:   I've lost 242lbs since my first consultation on Nov 23, 2010.   I've lost 206lbs since my surgery on Jan 10, 2011   I'm now smaller than I have been since the 6th grade. I have never been this size as an adult.   I am in the smallest pants and shirts I have worn since who knows when.   I have cleaned out my closet of the old clothes and this time instead of storing them in the basement to use when the weight returns, I am getting rid of them.   I'm beginning to feel on the outside like the person I have always believed I was on the inside.   I am so fortunate that I'm still seeing benefits and confirmation, almost daily, of my choice to have the sleeve .   Thanks for reading. Take care y'all.

CHECKING IN

I weigh 217lbs. That is a loss of 28lbs since my surgery on August 1st…and a loss of 43lbs since the start of the year. I am disappointed. I hate to be looking a gift horse in the mouth and all, but I am a scant 18 days away from my 2 month surgerversery and I was hoping that I would be able to lose 40 lbs the first 2 months.   I was told the average weight loss the 1st 2 months was 40lbs. Alas, I am going to end up being below average. I haven’t stalled yet. I have lost at least 2lbs every week. I would imagine if I continue at this rate at a lowly 2lbs a week by Christmas- I would be down 56lbs since my surgery. Not great- but better than I would have had otherwise.   I am struggling to mentally adjust to my clothing size. I am wearing clothes I haven’t worn in years- I find I check myself in the mirror 3-4 times before leaving for work. “Are you sure this fits?”   My walks are the best part of my day. I walk on my lunch and again after work. I look forward to both of them and find that I am in a foul mood if I have to miss one.   It takes forever to eat. This frustrates the life out of me. I usually lose interest in the food long before I finish it. I hit my protein goals every day. I struggle with my water. This could be why I am not losing as much as I would like. I have fallen short on almost every single day. I feel like I am either eating or drinking every moment of the day. Who has time for this?   I have discovered I love spinach leaves. They make my toes curl. Chocolate use to be the bomb- now I think it is baby spinach.   I am feeling better. I am looking a little better. I am always pushing for the next 2lbs. I keep telling myself the next 10 will be the 10 that will make a big difference.   In reality- I haven’t been this weight in about 3-4 years. I am feeling better than I have in ages. I am no longer taking my blood pressure medication- because I no longer need it. I am very blessed to have been able to come this far in just one month and 13 days….now if only I could lose the next 10 pounds…

...it's FINALLY starting to come together!!...

Well, I've completed 3 months of medically supervised weight loss & waited allllll last week for the approval which didn't come until yesterday. Today I got my pre-op & surgery dates!! I go for my pre-op this Thursday & I'll get sleeved next Tuesday, September 20th!! I'm so excited that everything is finally falling into place...it seems like it's taken forever --- by far, waiting has been the hardest part of all of this! Anyway -- please hold a good thought for me, if you're so inclined! I'm soooooo looking forward to being a loser!

One day to go!

OMG I can't believe my surgery is tomorrow. I'm sitting here at the San Diego airport waiting for Ricardo to pick us up. I can't stop thinking if this was the right thing to do. I know I've struggled with my weight all my life, but did I try hard enough? Now I'm going to go through with this permanent body altering procedure. Ok will continue! Ricardo is here!   Continued....   I am here now at the Hotel Ticuan in Tijuana. So far it´s very very nice. I bet the food here is awesome...but I wouldn´t know Ricardo was very very nice and personable, and I´m very pleased so far. So, for some reason, i feel a little better than <i did an hour and a half ago when <i started writting this blog entry. <i guess i´m now finally easing into acceptance. Well, me and my honey are going to enjoy the city a little bit before i got in tomorrow.   Wish me luck!

6 Days to go....

My daily check-in: I weighed in at the Dr yesterday and was down 7 lbs!!! And that was with my clothes on!   I'm now sitting down with a cup of my chicken broth, and let me tell you, it has never tasted so good! I never thought sipping broth would be such a treat. But it truly is. I have been learning so much about myself during this time period. It is great to learn!   Well I don't have much time to give an update for now as I'm at work. But I had a moment and wanted to rejoice that there are only 6 days left...then the complete cleanse and then surgery! I have a friend who works with me considering the lapband surgery. It would be great to have a friend go through this at the same time! Do any of you have friends that are also going through this? I imagine it would be easier to have someone to talk to as you process things.   Hope everyone is doing well and that your day goes great!

Uh Oh, Hungry

It's my first day of my liquid diet and I'm still hungry. I don't think that's a good sign. Any suggestions of what I can do besides my 3 protein drinks, vitamins and a little broth?
