Not unless it's a requirement from either your surgeon or your insurance. People with your BMI and higher have the surgery all the time.

Sometimes there's a six month supervised diet required by insurance companies and many doctors require a pre-surgery liver shrinking diet, but it varies from physician to physician. I've also read where people have been asked to lose 10% of the weight they need to lose, but I'm not sure if that's doctor or insurance directed.

You just need to check with your surgeon to get all the details.

do i have to lose weight b 4 surgery since my bmi is 45??? im 5'5 245lbs i hope not

I also had a 45 BMI before surgery. My surgeon had me on a 2 week high Protein liquid diet, that consisted mainly of shakes, plus 2 cups of veggies p/day. They purpose of the diet is to shrink the liver, making it easier to permore the surgery.

Even within my surgeon's practice, the length and diet restrictions are different from patient to patient.

Your surgeon/nutritionist will be able to give you details of what they want you to follow.

Good luck.

Hey, IWanna....unless your insurance requires it, probably not. There is usually a pre-op diet BUT, as Padanelle points out, that is meant to shrink your liver so that the doctor has a bit more room in which to work.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
