I feel awful, is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My Dr. has me on a liquid diet for two weeks prior to surgery...you know the typical high Protein Shakes and clear Protein Drinks, Water, Jello, popsicles, etc. I have been on it for 5 days now and feel terrible. I feel thick headed, mildly nauseous and feel like I could sleep my day away because I am so tired. I know I am getting enough Protein because I am not hungry...but feeling like this for another 9 days is not appealing. Am I detoxing?? Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks!

~Kristen

I was definitely a little tired on my pre-op diet; I think an extremely low calorie diet tends to do that, at least until the body gets used to it.

However, the nausea is worrisome. Call your surgeon, bariatric nurse, clinical weight loss coordinator, nutritionist, WHOEVER, and tell them about it. My concern is that you might be reacting to the Protein powder, particularly if it's whey-based.

Good luck!

Well, I am about to join you in your venture. I go on my liquid diet on monday the 1st and my banding date is June 16th. I got this AMP Product called Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 fron GNC. It has 20 grams of Protein per scoop and if you want more just add a scoop to get you 40 grams. Carbs are 7 grams per 3 scoops and 2 grams of sugar per 3 scoops. This was recommended by GNC. I used to take a HRM liquid diet and fould out that I was latose tolerant. So, I changed it to non latose. I was instructed to go on the liquid diet as well. So others got to go on an Atkins Diet. It has something to do with the liver, trying to get it smaller prior to surgery.

Kristen:

Could be high glucose. You might want to see about using a sugar-free supplement (like Glucerna?) or adding some Fiber to control the rapid release of glucose.

Just a thought.

I just finished day 5 and surgery is June 9. i had a massive headache come day 3. Started doing an extra shake and then had my daughter pick me up french onion Soup from Panera, they did strain it for me, AND left off the bread, so it was really the broth only, but oh so good.

My headache went away, and day 4 and 5 I had soup also. No headache. I think it is just the body detoxing and getting used to the change.

I too use the GNC Protein, as well as a bunch of protein mixes that purchased at Bariatriceating.com

i love the banana creme Protein Shakes from GNC, and I am mixing them with fat free milk.

I am on my pre-op diet for the past 3 days (my surgery is June 11). I don't feel too bad but my diet primarily consists of slim fast, no-sodium broth, unsweetened apple sauce, and sugar-free fat-free pudding (high Protein Shakes come only after I have my surgery according to my surgical team's plan). I may feel a little less energetic than usual, I'm not having headaches so much. I am losing weight, which is nice!

I finish my preop tomorrow- surgery Tuesday.

Some days I have been fine. Others I have had the shakes, pains in my upper abdomen etc etc.

I think it is a major shock to the system as we are used to eating so much more and not letting ourselves get hungry.

I am actually looking forward to the postop as although I won't have bars that I can chew at least i can eat yogurt, custard etc and have real homemade Soup that doesn't taste like chalk!

I would definitely call your doctor. I started my pre-op diet 2 weeks ago (my surgery is tomorrow am!). My doctor put me on six Carnation Instant Breakfast with 1 percent milk. After 3 days, I had horrible cramps, gas, diarrhea, etc. I felt like crap, I could barely get out of bed to go the bathroom (I lost 12 lbs in 3 days.) Even switching to lactose-free milk didn't help. I talked to my doctor (his NP actually) and she said to go on a 1200 calorie diet. I was surprised how nonchalant the nurse was about switching to the 1200 calorie diet; it wasn't a big deal. After a couple days of sticking to the 1200 calorie diet, I started feeling better. Overall I've lost 18 lbs in 2 weeks.

Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor. All doctors seem to have their own prefered diet, but nothing's set in stone.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the responses. I called my Dr. and he was pretty non-chalant as well. I was kind of put off by that because though he's done hundreds of these surgeries this is MY first...so it's important to me!! Anywho, he said to just have a piece of chicken and some salad or broccoli to help. It did help a little...I am thinking it's all the whey. I might have to look into another Protein Powder source.

Thanks again everyone!

I'm currently on the pre-op diet myself. I'm on day eight. Day 2 and 3 were the worst. I felt lathargic, sad, and just wanted to sit in a corner and cry. I added more protien and now I am leveling off and feel much better. I'm still hollow feeling but not weak and tired. Hang in there.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
