Crushable medications

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am scheduled for surgery 10/3 and have 2 medication questions. I currently take pristiq for depression and excedrine Migraine and I know that I'll need to find others. Any suggestions? I know for sure Pristiq isn't ok because it's extended release and not available in any other form. As far as migraine meds, I can't take imitrex so I depend on excedrine but since that'll be a no-no, I'm at a loss. I can't do nasal sprays. Thanks in advance!

I take Wellburtin and I am able to crfush that up or cut it in fours. That is for depressiona and anxiety. I don't get migranes so I don't have any advice on that. But talk to you Dr. and they can help you. Good Luck

In a pre op meeting they went over my meds and then after the surgery the Dr. wrote new RX"S for either a liquid or a crushable form of the same med or a simular one. They told me to mix the med's in applesauce but I could not get it down. I mix mine in sugar free pudding . Make sure you ask you Dr.

Good Luck

Shaz:smile:

Aspirin and Ibuprofen products are not permitted once you have been banded. There is a danger of ulceration complications around your band.

Have you ever tried the shots of imitrex. They work good for me. You need ins for those they run about $100.00 abox for two shots.

For Migraines my doctor has given me Maxalt, it comes in a wafer form that melts under your tongue in seconds. And the Maxalt is really effective for me. If I feel a Migraine coming on, and take it, I can be rid of the migraine in an hour or so.

to everyone for your suggestions. I spoke to my PCP and he gave me prescriptions for the maxalt and wellbutrin. I thought about trying the imitrex injections but my past experiences with imitrex were pretty brutal so I'm leaving that as a last resort (plus I hate shots). All of my other meds are crushable so I'll just be eating my applesauce or sf pudding concoction daily. Lol. Thanks again!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
