It is common, but try like heck to get in your fluids or you'll end up in a very bad state.

Keep that Water bottle with you like a bad habit. Take teeny sips often. You will get through this!

I could only manage very tiny sips after surgery. 12 days out for me, and I can say it just takes time - gets easier day by day. Taking normal sips now. I don't remember which day exactly it happened, but it was gradual. But it made me so stressed because I too was a huge Water drinker. Hang in there - every sip counts!!!!

Hi. Just joined the forum.

I was sleeved two days ago (Feb 1st) struggling to drink as much as I should, sipping as often as possible but don't seem to get though more than 1ltr a day?

I was told to aim for 2ltr but the hospital said some people struggle at first?

Any comments appreciated.

I remember crying and wondering what the heck I had done! It gets better, it gets amazing! One sip at a time, and definately find something to take your mind off what youre not doing!!

Hi

I ended up doing what a lot of people do, I went back to work!

I work for myself so only light duties sat at my desk.

It's all going well so far, moving up a small notch for week 2 now, any tips?

Happy to stay in touch with everyone, the forum has been a great help for me so far and I'd like to give back to others too.

I was sleeved 5 years ago and had problems getting my liquids after surgery and had to be hospitalized for borderline kidney failure from severe dehydration. The best advice I can give you is try try Water at different temperatures. I was able to drink warm and hot water without issue but the cold water for some reason made my stomach hurt. Hope this helps.

I actually set alarms for everything. My after surgery book gave me the steps on what to eat and when and what to drink and ehen. No Water within 15 minutes of meals, and very small food every hour. So my Water alarm was set at waking. First thing was my sipping...then I set the alarm for 15 min. Then id have my "meal" ...as we know its more of a spoon full. Then id set my alarm for 45 min and start it all again. Of course the timing was based on what week I was on. The more weeks in I had more water alarms than food alarms. I also set my alarms in between for walking. After I ate, I walked for 15-minutes....

Best gift I bought myself? I bought those baby appetizer forks and spoons! It really helped me take smaller bites and eat slower! I also bought a set of2 x 2 cupcake plates! Still use them!!! It all sounds silly, but it really helped! And puts me back on track now... 3 years later!!!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
